Move On With The Year. Alice Costelloe

En Move On With The Year wordt alleen maar mooier en interessanter.

Foundlings vol. 1 & 2. Various Artists

Tiny Room Records celebrates its 10 year anniversary this year and its ninth year on this blog. The oldest post I could find was from 2016 by Queen of the Meadow. Ever since then output of the label run from the attic of founder Stefan Breuer's house has found its way here regularly. There's even an extensive interview with Breuer by Wino Penris from 2018 (read here: https://wonomagazine.blogspot.com/2018/04/tiny-room-is-eigenlijk-een-familie.html).

The label celebrates its anniversary with a double compilation album containing foundlings, songs that never fitted on an album but were lying around in a digital form somewhere on a disk or harddrive. 27 Of them were recovered and compiled on two elpees. You will find many names that you could have found on this blog over the years.

I always have a lot of trouble finding the right words for a compilation album with various artists on it and I'm not going to try and find them today. For that the songs are too different and it's impossible to do everyone right. When you look at the tracklist you will find I Am Oak, in which Breuer played bass for years, Toby Goodshank, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, Astral Swans, Queen of the Meadow and Breuer's own band The World of Dust among the artists present on the compilation and many, many more.

Some of the songs are a bit esoteric but for others I can only imagine that it was because of having to make hard choices on what can be on the album and then sort of forget about the song later. Believe me, the compilation is very much worthwhile getting to know. As most people know, leftovers often taste better the next day after reheating. Foundlings vol. 1 & 2 proves that the same goes for songs left over.

Double Infinity. Big Thief

Double Infinity is a mysterious title. Infinity is already a concept so enormous that a human brain can't get around its concept. Otherwise it would not be called infinity. Let alone double that. Big Thief is not afraid to pose it as the title to its sixth album. It is an album that is at odds with the albums that came before, musically and personally. Bass player Max Oleartchik left the band in the summer of last year, citing "interpersonal reasons", which leaves the band a trio.

Musically the shift is very noticeable. Where I would always have lumped the band in somewhere between indie and alternative folk, Double Infinity adds dreampop and electronic atmospherics to those genres. The four blend into something old and new all at once. I wonder whether Adrianne Lenker has listened a lot to Fleetwood Mac's Stevie Nicks in the run up to this album. Listen eg to 'All Night All Day' and you'll hear what I mean.

After several sessions on Spotify with Double Infinity I have still not made up my mind completely but have decided to put the album on my to buy list. Without a doubt I want to get better acquainted with this music and for a longer period of time. For one, several songs are so intriguing. They invite me to get to know them more intimately.

This starts right at the beginning. Does it start with a human voice saying "poem", instead of a drum sound? Right after, the mystery starts and all sorts of wobbly sounds are poured into my ears, without the song becoming psychedelic. The vocal delivery is both relaxed in sound and in a hurry because of the number of words being shared. It is 'Incomprehensible' how ms. Lenker manages this mix as confident as she does.

Promo photo: Daniel Arnold
Musically, Double Infinity is a departure from what came before, without the band burning its bridges behind it. As I've written before, I did not get into the first four Big Thief albums. The first two I didn't know about, with number 3 and 4 I had to work too hard to get into them. Only number 5 went down immediately and was played regularly until fairly recently. What I'm hearing on Double Infinity is truly different. The effects used in the music, the atmospherics, the adventure, the overall mood, all make Double Infinity stand out. At the same time there's a lot of laughter as you can hear in the intro to 'Los Angeles', so the band must have had fun making this music, exploring new avenues and sounds. At the same time 'Los Angeles' is a direct line with what came before. Closing song 'How Could I Have Known' is the song with the country feel, but mixing Stevie Nicks with atmospherics at that.

Several songs are not complex at the outset. A chord progression that is easy to play for even beginners on the guitar. It needs pointing out, that this is the starting point, because the band went on a limb to find the sounds that make the songs stand out. It did that with a host of friends all playing together and what we hear, is about what was recorded by them. Working with Alena Spanger, Caleb Michel, Hannah Cohen, Jon Nellen, Joshua Crumbly, June McDoom, Laraaji, Mikel Patrick Avery, Mikey Buishas certainly paid off, as Double Infinity is, like I said, very different. It's not just experimental, as the songs always came first. The quality is far above par. My guess is the album will get high into end of year lists. We will know in a few months.

Altogether Stranger. Lael Neal

WE WERE MADE PREY. Kathryn Joseph

Kathryn Joseph keert deze week terug met WE WERE MADE PREY.

2025, week 25. 10 singles

In a hurry, so enjoy!

Cryptic Friend. The Laissez Fairs

How many songs can pretend to be from circa 1967 in a successful and convincing way? Who can tell. With Cryptic Friend Las Vegas' The Laissez Fairs shows that one more song is no problem to digest at all. You will hear all the sounds you expect to hear, combined in a way that makes for a song you just want to listen to, despite that the protagonist's female friend "never listens to a word I say". The rock connoisseurs of the era will hear a slight resemblance to The Troggs' 'With A Girl Like You'. With singer John Fallon having a Reg Presley's edge to his voice as well. Fun is fun and The Laissez Fairs delivers it in spades in its latest single.

Same Drop. Lightheaded

I'd almost say that it's 1960s week, were it not that the order of presentation of this post is purely coincidental. Lightheaded, that formed in New Jersey in 2017, consists of the duo Cynthia Rittenbach and Stephen Stec. The duo is on route to the release of its debut album 'Thinking, Dreaming, Scheming' on 27 June. I do not know what the album sounds like but Same Drop is a 1960s styled folkpop song. Even Jefferson Airplane sounded a little like this on its debut album 'Takes Off'. Mostly sung by Cynthia Rittenbach, Same Drop does have a distinctive flavour of girl pop groups like The Shangri Las as well. Slightly melancholy, yet distinctly pop music. It is possible to sound like 1960-something with ease today and it makes for pleasant listening as well.

On And On. Jeanines

With On And On by NYC trio Jeanines there's even more nostalgic sounds from a time long gone. This single is far more up tempo though, with a rhythm guitar that is more distinctive than was possible in the 1960s. The flavour is undeniably sixties pop though. Alicia Jeanine - vocals, guitar, bass, violin, Jed Smith - vocals, guitar, bass, drums and Maggie Gaster - vocals, bass, use their voices to create a vocal melody and harmonies that sound so familiar, as if I know them since forever, while being totally new at the same time. Jeanines is a label mate of Lightheaded. Their albums are released on the same date and they will tour the U.K.together extensively in July. 'How Long Can It Last' the album is called and if its as much fun as On And On, it's a must listen.

Go It Alone. Garlands

Time flies, that's for sure. It shows as the last song by Garlands on the blog was over one year ago. The Glaswegian trio is back with a tremendously poppy rock song that will please many an ear that it is allowed to enter. As always the approach is direct, straightforward. The band lays down a firm foundation over which the melody can take the lead and additional melodies can play themselves out. You will discover nice guitar overdubs, with a pleasant effect on the sound. Vocal harmonies are another great addition to the song. Of course, there's a nice guitar solo, in fact there are two at the same time going on. With Go It Alone Garlands shows again that it's a band that deserves more attention than it's getting. I'm still a fan, for many years now.

Laurel. The Far Out

Also Laurel is a song filled with musical nostalgia but not from the 1960s. This is more a show tune. Think on the one hand something like Barry Manilow's 'Copacabana' but on the other hand a band like Swing Out Sister from the 1980s. The Far Out has a just as nice singer and horns in abundance. The Far Out is totally different from I'm used to coming out of Boston, but not less pleasant to listen to. Laurel has a lush arrangement that makes for very pleasant listening. The band has one  serious issue to face. With a song like Laurel, it's going to be very hard to rest on its laurel, as I can imagine that many people will want to hear this song, and much more from where this came from. Singer Olivia Lowe leads the way alright, but listen to that keys and the horns arrangement all backed by almost frivolous bass and drums. Laurel ought to be a hit, today and not in 1985 or before.

Just Like A Flower. Winter

Ah, a song that puts the reviewer on the wrong foot. Always a nice surprise. Just Like A Flower starts out as a ballad with dreamy vocals and a guitar sound that resembles some kind of horn, calling out through the fog. A silence that lasts pretty long, gives the impression to I have listened to a very short, soft song. Then a drum fill and off goes Winter and starts to rock no little. Alternative rock from the early 90s, Boston region I'd say. Who is Winter? As far as I can tell it is a new name on this blog. Winter is Samira Winter who is about to release her second album called 'Adult Romantix' on 22 August. After the soft and slow opening Just Like A Flower simply explodes into a great alternative rock song. After having grown up in Brazil, Ms. Winter moved to Boston, before relocating to L.A. over ten years ago. Musically, the link with Boston was already clear to me. The other influences may become apparent on  'Adult Romantix'. We'll know after the holidays.

Touch And Go. Smut

No less than five years ago Smut debuted on this blog. Another single finds its way to a single's post. Smut, the Chicago band comprised of vocalist/lyricist Tay Roebuck, guitarist Andie Min, bassist John Steiner, guitarist Sam Ruschman, and drummer Aidan O’Connor, shows once again it is able to rock in an alternative way. The contrast between the tough playing band and the dreamy vocals of Tay Roebuck are very much apparent on Touch And Go. Again, I can write that there is a nostalgic streak in this song. The 90s are all over the song. Veruca Salt, Belly, think these kind of female fronted bands and you'll get the drift. Smut makes its point quite confidently here. Touch And Go does everything right. Taken from the album 'Tomorrow Comes Crashing' that is also released on 27 June.

Elderberry Wine. Wednesday

Karly Hartzman, MJ Lenderman, Xandy Chelmis, Alan Miller, and Ethan Baechtold or Wednesday returns to this blog with a song that shares its title with the b-side of my first Elton John single, 'Crocodile Rock'. Anyone who was derailed by one of the songs on 'Rat Saw God' will be surprised to hear the pure country played on Elderberry Wine and will fear what lies in wait on the upcoming album. The new single is a song that is sweet and soothing. A pedal steel guitar takes the lead role with Karly Hartzman's soft sounding voice. Although the song has a tough side in its sound, the atmosphere is pure country music. Hartman has as much as a tear in her voice as it allows it to have. I'm pleased with the new single alright.

Sorgjâl. Massimo Silverio

And now for something completely different. Sorgjäl is a ten minute long song or composition by Massimo Silverio composed with Manuel Volpe and Nicholas Remondino. He sings in a local mountain language called Carnic, an ancient, mountainous variant of the Friulian language, in the north-east of Italy. Listening I hear some Italian and many things that don't land recognisable on my ears. What to expect when you delve into the ten minutes? A mix of modern and old. There's clearly an ancient folk element in the composition but also something of the modern classic and of droning music. At the beginning modern drums are created with electronic sounds around is, all accompanying a cello (I think). It takes quite some time before Silverio starts singing with a dreamy, husky voice. By then the atmosphere has been set and I'm drawn well into the song. Later this year there will be an album.

No More Lies. Mad Dogs

And now it's time for some nice and straightforward punkrock from Italy. Mad Dogs kicks its new single off with a nice long guitar intro. Two guitars play a tough rhythm supported by the rhythm section and then the lead guitar comes in with a short burst of notes that sets No More Lies on fire immediately. That fire is not put out before it's all played out and over. The lead guitar comes in with short, melodic bursts all throughout the song. The wah wah solo is really, really sweet. And that's not all because the band presents a keyboard solo as well before the guitar takes over once again. Mad Dogs is Marco Cipolletti - guitar, vocals, Luca Zenobi - guitar, Simone Mosciatti - bass and Giacomo Zepponi - drums. Together they cook a storm that is just so nice. Album 'The Future Is Now' will be released on 5 September.

Pirouette. Model/Actriz

On the basis of the singles preceding Pirouette I had not expected to write a single letter on the album, but, here I am. After a few seconds I already new enough when skimming over recent singles earlier this year. I gave the cd one chance while reading the morning paper and was too lazy to turn it off after the first two songs.

Luckily, I did not do so, as slowly but surely a musical trip unfolded itself that brought me to many places that I did not expect myself to go. Yes, there are fiendishly loud and sometimes totally ugly rhythms and sounds. But there are also melodies that seem to be lifted from the best Soft Cell songs, and then add a pure punk attitude oozing through the rhythms.

Over the din singer Cole Haden sings, shouts, smooches, whispers and what not. He's a man with a multi-coloured voice. Like Soft Cell's Mark Almond, Haden does not hide is sexual preference. E.g. in 'Diva'. The biggest surprise, after hearing Blondshell sing about the "Soprano Museum" on its new album, see yesterday, Haden sings "I'm such a Soprano" in 'Diva''.

The band, besides Cole Haden, Ruben Radlauer, drums, Jack Wetmore, guitar and Aaron Shapiro, bass, formed in 2016 in Boston, to break up a year later, to reform in 2019. Album 'Dogsbody' was released in 2023. From what I've read it more punk oriented than Pirouette. All members are credited with production for Pirouette, which I take as producing all the electronic sounds on the album. Now based in Brooklyn, a hotbed of modern bands and singers, it is ready to take on the world.

The most surprising song on the album is 'Acid Rain'. I can almost call it a ballad and compared to the rest of the album, it is. Haden sings with his softest voice and the band accompanies him accordingly, if we sort of ignore all the weird noises that jump in and out of the song for most of the time. Let's call it the weirdest solo guitar ever, as it is all effects and atmospherics.

It shows how the album attracts and pushes away, attracts and pushes away for the whole of the time. This is what the album does per song and within each song. Beauty was not the foremost thing on the four musicians' mind. To create some huge effects was and the band fully succeeded on this score. As I already said, Pirouette is a musical trip and one I am glad I've been on. And, yes, to my big surprise.

SABLE, fABLE. Bon Iver

Believe it or not, but Bon Iver, except for a single with The National has never been on this blog and from my hand certainly not in the magazine of old. Today he is, with his recent album SABLE, fABLE. Somehow the description of the music and the interview in 'Oor' made me give the album a chance and I have to say that I like most of what I hear.

That is strange, yes. I remember that after all the hullabaloo because of his first two albums, I was left behind with the feeling what is all this fuzz about? I hated the man's falsetto and just stopped listening. With the electronics in the 10s I was truly convinced that Justin Vernon's music would never be for me.

As you will understand SABLE, fABLE really came as a surprise. I did not even bother to listen to the provided link. Why would I? I'm glad I did anyway. The falsetto is, mostly, gone and electronics are far more functional here, at least in most songs.

I understand that SABLE was an EP first, released somewhere last year. Later fABLE was added, resulting in a full length album. The whole starts with an electronic sound that can put someone off immediately. It doesn't last long and moves into 'Things Behind Things Behind Things'. To my surprise I get a Coldplay feel here. Should Chris Martin ever decide to wind down all things reeking of stadiums, a new Coldplay song could actually sound like this. Justin Vernon lowers his voice and does a Chris Martin. The arrangement is far too subtle though and aims for listening. This aim continues with the folk song 'Speyside'.

Later on on the album the songs become less recognisable as traditional, acoustic folk songs. 'Everything Is Peaceful Love', for example does a modern take on Bee Gees. Something the band may have sounded like had it recorded in the 2020s. The electronic antics of  'Walk Home''s vocals is a bit much for me. The rest of the song is fairly okay though. The same goes for his collaboration with Dijon and Flock of Dimes, 'Day One'. Bon Iver starts losing me a little here. It all sounds terribly forced to me. As if I'm listening to the song of a totally different artist from an R&B background grappling with his focus.

All's well again with 'From'. Bon Iver somehow mixes The Doobie Brothers' 'What A Fool Believes' and Beyoncé in a successful way. A mix that is not always my cup of tea but on SABLE fABLE is. The album continues with the R&B jazzy track 'I'll Be There' with Danielle Haim of the trio with the same family name. This music is on the edge of what I can process but manages to keep on the right side. I do wonder if this music is what the people Bon Iver conquered with his first two albums want to hear from Bon Iver in 2025. Part of SABLE, fABLE and especially SABLE may be. For those who bend with an artist and grow with him/her and allow themselves to be surprised, it certainly will be. Others like me join in, at least in part for this album.

How Love Bends. Reb Fountain

Reb Fountain made quite the impression on me with her previous two albums, 'Reb Fountain' and 'Iris', and live at the Paradiso in Amsterdam. Except for an occasional single, things went quiet until late last year, when the first single announcing How Love Bends was released. The two singles announced that Reb Fountain was about to set a next step in her career. The mysticism and mystery in her music was still there but the music felt different and more electronic.

My hunch was right, but also in a totally different way. Reb Fountain recorded the album with her band, Karin Canzek on bass, Earl Robertson on drums and Dave Khan on guitar & synths who also co-produced the album with Simon Gooding. Add some strings here and there and you have the musical picture. Together they made the album more direct in many songs, perhaps more present is a better description. but on the other hand there is the very jazzy 'Ring Ring', an ultimate slow song and so bare. All the attention goes to the singer, who almost flows away to soaring heights. Her voice simply shines brighter than ever before.

Reb Fountain is from New Zealand, although born in the U..S. She is an award-winning artist there, but I founnd that her new record is not released over here. I'm sure that very good Dutch artists never see a release down under, but in the case of Reb Fountain it is a bit absurd, as her previous two are available even in my local record store. Based on the quality of How Love Bends it becomes even moe absurd.

Although it is always dangerous to state the biggest of words so soon after a release, How Love Bends is an extremely good record. It may well become my favourite of the three. Despite having a little fright from the electronics in single 'Nothing Like', when I first heard it. Vocally Reb Fountain is in great shape and the band supports her for the whole of the way.

While the band setting may by elementary, drums, bass and keyboard or guitar, it is all else that enriches the songs no little. The use of seemingly endless reverb is an electronic effect, the strings and atmospherics are what gives How Loves Bends its depth. In every single song this richness is presented to the listener. It's what makes Reb Fountain mysterious 2.0. The whole album is next level Reb Fountain. No matter how good I think 'Reb Fountain' and 'Iris' are, How Love Bends seems to have have something on top of it all. Of course, fans will recognise familiar musical references. Things only start there, is my opinion.

I do not feel like bringing out individual songs for you. It simply feels inappropriate. Let 'Ring Ring' stand as an example. It suffices, as How Love Bends is a total experience. An album to submerge in. It is like a warm bath that keeps its temperature without having to change anything. The team, singer, band and producers, went for the best and together achieved even more.

How Love Bends is one of the best records, if not the best, released in 2025 so far. And now for that release or distribution in NL. Anyone interested?

INTEIRA. Nina Maia

Disappointment Machine. Arliston

Arliston's album review was in the air. After the singles reviews in the past months it became kind of predictable. Yet, it was harder then might be expected. I will come to that later. First, let me state that Disappointment Machine is an album that does all but disappoint. It is an album filled with wide swaths of atmospheric music, that seldom becomes concrete. In fact many sounds are sort of obfuscated in digital treatments. This makes for a very solemn sounding album, that I have to be in the mood for. It's not for every moment of the day.

Arlington is a U.K. duo, Jack Ratcliffe (vocals) and George Hasbury (guitar, production), releasing its debut album. Listening to it I am reminded of The National immediately or more specific its singer Matt Berninger. Ratcliffe is able to sing just as low but also has the vocal range to go far higher. The duo must be The National fans though, as the music has the same atmosphere regularly. As I am a late comer to the The National party, I had to settle into Disappointment Machine first.

Photo: Arliston
The three singles I've reviewed in 2024 somehow did not prepare me for a whole album of this moody music. As I liked all three, I took my time to get acquainted with the album. And slowly but surely it grew on me. Take the title track. I truly did not know what to think of it at first. And then I discovered the instruments that are added to the piano and atmospherics (percussion). Jack Ratcliffe's voice goes into the deep and into heights. Especially in the background vocals. Slowly but surely the track gets more beautiful and impressive.

This example sort of sums up Disappointment Machine for me. When I'm in the mood for this album I soar to great heights with it. If not, it sort of leaves me cold, because I cannot connect to its mood. In other words, this is a late evening album, preferably with a headset on, not disturbed by anyone. Tranquil moments like these are rare in a busy life, but have to be cherished immensely. I had one with 'Grace' yesterday evening and can imagine having one with Arliston sometime soon, listening to George Hasbury's music and production and travelling with Jack Ratcliffe's stories.

All We Need. Aerolinea

The stream of releases is slowly drying up for 2024. One of the later ones that called for my attention is the collaboration between an Atlanta musician and an Argentinian singer-songwriter. All We Need is an album that has a modern, wide sound but is well grounded into 80s and 90s style music.

Aerolinea is a duo, Victoria Real and Eric Weissinger. The latter was on this blog before as one half of the duo I Am A Rocketship. Real and Weissinger have been sharing music files since 2023, met up in between and late in 2024 the result is the album All We Need.

Musically the album is extremely rich. From French electronic pop stars Air to David Bowie, influences are found everywhere on All We Need. What strikes me, is the wide sound of the music, while at the same time it seems like both singers are standing right in front of me. The music is part digital and part electric. Both Real and Weissinger play a host of instruments and programming and sampling. Only on 'Dreamer' there is an "organic" drummer, Kellii Scott.

What I love about All We Need is the clear sound. Despite there being many and different sounds and instruments, they can all be heard. No matter how layered, the individual instruments stand out. This would all be inconsequential if the music wasn't to my liking. It is, as you will have gathered. The atmosphere on All We Need is somewhat mysterious. The contrast between the song and the presence of the rhythm and the lead guitar in 'What Is Love' is almost disconcerting. What mood to follow?, until the guitar really takes over, only to drop away bringing back the mystery.

The way Weissinger and Real sing together is another feature of the album. Real is the principle singer, but Weissinger joins regularly. And although he can be called more a whisperer than singer, it is extremely complementary. It is the starting point of the adventure Aerolinea offers its listener. Like 'Desire'. It's possible to call the song a dance track. The rhythm is quite prevalent. A heavy version of 'All I Need' or 'Sexy Boy'. Victoria Real sings just as dreamy. And to think that she was trained as a guitarist in Robert Fripp's project 'League of Crafty Guitarists'. Since she released four solo albums in Argentina. And then she met Eric Weissinger in an online festival during Covid. Since this week the rest is history.

All We Need is only eight tracks long. It has one foot in the 2020s but one foot soundly in the past. The mix works for someone my age, musically conscious of both decades, able to pick out the many references. Some more to my liking than others but overall scoring All We Want positively. This seems just the right way to bring it all together.

(And that Air connection. Is the title All We Need a nod to Air's single 'All I Need'?)

2024, week 46. 10 singles

In front of my window it is again greyish, dry and little wind. The remaining leaves are slowly falling from the tress by their own accord as autumn storms are not here so far this year. A few more days and they will be gone and lay on the pavements and in the gardens. With all the other stuff going on in this world, the weather's greyness matches all else. It is hard to see some light these days it seems. Things are changing extremely fast and masks and gloves come of. Luckily, we still have music. It is becoming less and less a consolation or distraction though.

The Back Of The Beyond. JC Miller

To me JC Miller came out of nowhere. Yet since a couple of months he's cranking out one nice country/folk rock songs after the other and all are pretty nice and good. The Back Of The Beyond is no different. Having made a career out of writing music for commercials, he now produces music that makes more of an impression on me. Expect an acoustic guitar/dobro, a banjo, a lap or pedal steel and an easy going rhythm that does not go fast but gets rider and horse through the desert. This song is like the chugging freight train in the video, with JC Miller sounding like he's ready for a drink after a long, thirsty day. It is surprising how a song that sounds like as if there are another thousands to replace it, makes an instant impression based on that rhythm and little solo notes coming from the three, very different kind of guitars. When is the album coming? Not much more and we'll have enough singles for one.

Closing Time. Remy van Kesteren feat. Cape Sleep

Remy van Kasteren in the past years found his way into my inbox with instrumental harp, modern classical music. In other words, not exactly my cup of tea. Today you do find him on the blog, in a collaboration with Kim Janssen, a.k.a. Cape Sleep since this year. Together they work on an old track Van Kesteren was unable to finish himself. There was always something missing and that something was a lot it seems. Together they created a song in the style of Patrick Watson, where the harp is one of the instruments. Present but not overly so. Strings and percussion play a role and not to forget Kim Janssen's voice. The result is a nice alternative ballad that touches the right strings with me.

Nothing Would Change. The Linda Lindas

The Linda Linda's is a punk band from L.A. and with Nothing Would Change announced the release of its sophomore album 'No Problem', which released on 11 October. Nothing Would Change is a perfect punk pop single. The song has a golden melody and all the strength it needs. In Lucia del Garza the band has a singer that has that female innocence in her voice while not giving an inch on the punk front. The result is a song that fits in a long line of songs from The Go-Go's, The Bangles and 'Walking On Sunshine'. While at the same time running with the big boys as well. The list of the band's support slots is endless. If the other songs on 'No Problem' are as nice as Nothing Would Change, the support slots will be replaced by headlining shows pretty soon. This is good, period.

Lowdown, parts i and ii. Michael Kiwanuga

Michael Kiwanuga entered my life when I had to find a third album in those buy three for two offers. I had heard the name and read about his reputation. That was it. It turned out to be the best buy of the three. That was quite some time ago when 'Kiwanuga' entered my home. Finally, there's a new song and one that resonates immediately. Lowdown has this ultra relaxed atmosphere. Filled with a warm sound all over and that soulful voice. Lowdown has the mood that fits the title. But then, just start listening to that warm Hammond, that weird guitar solo. The song moves fairly predictably, beautiful but not surprising. That is kept for part ii, when the sound, not the mood, changes. This is pure Pink Floyd, with a guitar solo that could have been played by David Gilmour. If this is the quality of the new album, 'Small Changes', count me in, game on.

Ultra. Neànder

And another instrumental guitar band from Germany finds its way to this blog (and one without Nick DiSalvo in it). It does feature Jan Korbach, see 'Concrete Adem' on this blog in 2022. Ultra knows a few moods Neànder share with the listener. Underneath it all is a very firm rhythm section as tough as a hardrock, metal band should have. The intro doesn't give anything away though. A piano intro with keyboard (effect) underneath, giving the piano a lot of sustain. Then the band kicks in, full force with a tough chord progression. From there melody and power combat for the first position. This ends in a draw, I'd say, making the song far more interesting to listen to. The loud riff is replaced by melodic playing and shredding. No matter how tough Ultra is, there's enough going on to keep the song interesting and good. If anything, I'm interested in hearing more and that more is there already. Album 'III' was released on 9 November.

The Line (Redux) feat. Marissa Nadler. Vera Sola

Vera Sola, Dan Aykroyd's daughter, debuted on this blog this spring with thanks to Erwin Zijleman. She already is releasing a new EP called 'Ghostmaker'. The Line (Redux) is the single. The word redux made me want to check and yes, 'The Line' is a tough alternative rocker on her album 'Peacemaker'. Here it isn't. As it were, The Line (Redux) is a ghost version of the original. This version is acoustic and thanks to the singing with Marissa Nadler a modern version of The Andrew Sisters. Although it is a more serious song and the orchestra is missing, the harmony singing matches. I liked 'The Line' as it is an interesting rock song. I like the redux version better. It has more mystery and stands out far more. Vera Sola's voice stands out more as well. It is always a bit weird to hear a totally different version of a song, so soon after the original and not on the 10, 25, 50 year anniversary edition. In this case it is a good decision, as it adds to what already is. The strangest thing is, that, so I found in an old email, had I not have to rehearse with my own band due to an unexpected gig, I would have seen Vera Sola play live in 2019 together with a Dutch band. Without ever having heard of her at the time.

Dangomushi. Mei Semones

Mei Semones debuted on this blog with (the singles of) her EP 'Kabatomushi EP'. This EP now knows a vinyl release with on the b-side her previous EP 'Tsukino'. With her new single she, again, does everything different from what the average singer-songwriter around the world does. Were it not that I recently had the pleasure of having a Japanese singer-songwriter playing in my own living room in October. It sounded different than usual as well, despite it being a girl with a guitar. Mei Semones, a Brooklyn based artist from Japanese descent, sets herself apart through on the one side the arrangement of her songs and on the other the way she uses these instruments. It sounds different. Yes, there is bossa nova in the rhythm of her song(s) but there is so much more. It's just where the story starts. Also Dangomushi holds all this adventure in the way notes glide, smooth playing ends abruptly in stop-start notes before it all starts flowing again. Next, the way instruments are played changes and so the song changes a little at the time. In my EP review I compared Semones to Steely Dan. Not the music as such but the approach to and effect of both artist's music. Dangomushi shows that I was not far of the mark.

Strand EP. Aursjoen

Ria Aursjoen made her debut on this blog as a solo artist with her single 'Nytár' in early October. Today the member of San Francisco band Octavian Winters returns with her debut EP Strand. She takes the mood of her single to greater depths. She creates atmospheric moods with the help of synthesizers making me think of the music of Clannad and Enya around 1990. Celtic in other words. Her voice is not. I place that more in a gothic sort of music. Aursjoen's music is electronic in nature and that gives it its own vibe. Everything else has to subject itself to the electronic source of the instruments. To create this sound, she worked with producer William Faith (The Bellwether Syndicate, Faith and the Muse). The result is that all songs hover somewhere between direct and mystery. From the tough guitar opening of 'Apollo' to the soft floating of 'Lilypad'. The influences here go right back to the 1980s synth bands that scored a few hits at the time, like A Flock of Seagulls, Nik Kershaw or Thomas Dolby. Ria Aursjoen has picked up what she needs to create her own musical universe that fits her voice and gives the listener an experience to slowly undergo and submerge in.

Sister. Arthur Ahbez & The Flaming Ahbez

More music from New Zealand. I had never heard of Arthur Ahbez & The Flaming Ahbez. I read that Ahbez is around musically since 1987. INXS' big year in music to name one. With Sister I get a strong Love vibe. This is very, very 60s and eclectic. Just like Arthur Lee's band from the 60s. Combine this with a Rickenbacker (then) Jim McGuinn style and you come close to what Sister sounds like. Ahbez c.s. throw in a dozen moods changes into a few minutes. It is almost too hard to follow rationally. It's best to just go with the flow and let the band take you where it wants to go. I promise you, you will get there as well. Sister has nothing to do with 2024 and everything with the second half of the 60s. There's even a little The Monkees thrown in for good measure. People used to take trips at the time that were far out and groovy, a description that does right to Sister. Album 'Arthur Ahbez & The Flaming Ahbez' is out since last week.

Big D*** Energy. Lambrini Girls

Lambrini Girls, the Brighton duo (and a mighty drummer I suppose), returns to WoNoBlog with an aggressive punk song. I'd almost say Amyl and The Sniffers on steroids. The D*** in D***Energy as the label advertises it, most likely to avoid conservative filters, stands for dick of course. Phoebe Lunny (vocals/guitar) and Lilly Macieira (bass) have a message to share and do not hesitate to do so. What an energy is unleashed in this song. I have a hard time to conceive how they cope live should all Lambini Girls' songs be like this. They do build in a musical breather into the second half of the song before it all stops. And then things go at it full force once again. There's no way this song gets played on a radio anywhere in the world is my guess. It should be played in the home of every punk rock lover though. Things do not get much closer to the real thing of nearly 50 years ago. What a storm!
