Marathon EP. Marathon

Trio Marathon from Amsterdam has come by on this blog since it's first single 'Age' A live show followed and now, finally, the band's debut EP has seen the light of day. Postpunk is the word. Marathon has taken a deep dive into the record collection of the member's parents, if not grandparents. The sound of bands that were popular in the early 80s has found its way to this EP in a successful, and entertaining way.

Of course, a list of contemporary colleagues can be mentioned. Tramhaus, Global Charming and several other bands from NL, while bands like Fontaines DC, Shame, etc., can be mentioned from the British Isles. The fact that I mention Marathon in one go with these bands is a compliment to the music on Marathon. It is deserved. The band has charged its music with the positive energy it needs and more than enough of it to excel.

Marathon consists of Lennart van Hulst, Kay Koopmans and Nina Lijzenga. The former two met in high school and formed their first band there. With Lijzinga on board Marathon got its final form. Together they worked on new songs in the summer of 2022 and recorded them in the fall. The result is six glorious songs on Marathon.

The EP opens with the first single 'Age'. Arguably it is the most postpunk song on the album. The least uncompromising of the lot. Where Tramhaus comes through the most. Perhaps because there already is a Tramhaus, the band traversed in another direction. At the same time 'Age' is so impressive. "The single explodes in fantastic ways, with loads of force and melodies combined, with thanks to the guitar overdubs", I wrote in September 2022 and can still totally relate to my observation. This is a band with a point to make and succeeded in a grand way.

The EP never is this urgent in a confrontational way again. The opening riff of 'Tired' is a great one, musically and melodically. It shows that with dedication and patience it is still possible to write a great riff in 2022, no matter how many came before you. Kay Koopmans certainly found one. And then listen what Lijzinga does on the bass. Her "answer" makes the song even better. Lennart van Hulst fills up everything behind them on a mighty drums. 'Tired' is also totally energised but far more melodic. It is a different kind of song and I am not able (yet?) to tell you what I like better, except that I think the two songs are such a great start to this EP.

'The Company' follows the path 'Tired' created. A little the edge comes in, as does the British Isles connection. Shame is close by here in the guitar work. With a song like this Marathon ought to be able to make every festival field around Europe explode. This is serious party rock and roll for the 21st century.

Like so many other post punk bands Marathon is able to make the uncomfortable mix with pleasure. Although less extreme than Tramhaus e.g., Marathon is not in it for the easy pleasing. A lot of people will not stick around to find the melody in the band's music. Those that do, will find it in abundance. The band wants to rock in an alternative way but knows that a song also needs melodies. Something most bands tended to forget in the early 80s or perhaps, I often could not and still cannot find it in their songs. Not on Marathon. Melody is all over the place.

The band presents a near perfect mix of early 1980s postpunk and its circa 2020 equivalent. The skies are not coming down today although we hear about what can come down on a daily basis from Ukraine, it seems very far away right here. That is the difference with the uncompromising doom and gloom of 1980. There's enough to enjoy today and that does come through in the music on Marathon. Just listen to the glorious ending of the EP 'How Does It Feel'. Another huge potential festival hit in my ears. Marathon is a band to watch.

The Weakness. Ruston Kelly

Bruce Springsteen Live, Amsterdam Arena, zaterdag 27 mei 2023

Photo: HareD

Natuurlijk kwamen Born to Run, Dancing in the Dark en Born in the USA langs.

2023. Week 21, 10 singles

From a veteran of the punk days returning in a new guise to a debut single and a lot in between, the singles section is a varied lot once again. Enjoy!

Aviatrix. The 3 Clubman

Andy Partridge? Isn't that? Yes, it is. Now, I've never been an XTC fan but somehow always had a fascination for some of the new wave and beyond band's songs. Although that XTC still exists in a legal sense, the band has not been active since the mid-00s. Here Andy Partridge works together with Jen Olive and Stu Rowe under the name The 3 Clubman. Aviatrix totally falls into my fascination category. The song has a typical, almost a-musical central riff and from there moves into several interesting byways that lie in the category, how? There's some Latin in there, some amazingly melodic parts over that ongoing a-melodic riff. All kinds of embellishments that surprise and Jen Olive's voice coming from all angles. A flute coming straight out of a circa 1970 British folk song. And it all fits. Aviatrix is "just' a single. I'm ready for more alright.

Enemy. Elephant

Elephant can count on some quite positive reviews in NL for some time now. If I remember correctly, I did not overly warm to the band's debut album and listening to the first single of the upcoming album, I encounter the same feeling. Of course the song sounds nice and reminds me of a host of dreamy songs from long and less long ago. Exactly that is what is bothering me. What I miss is Elephant's own take on this dreamy pop music. I hear the band do a lot of things right, but when all is said and done I am not touched on the inside. The guitar solo certainly does its best, agreed. Still, I can't shake off the feeling I'm listening to an outtake from an album released somewhere in the 1970s, that finally surfaced on the 50 years edition or something similar. It must be me, as a lot of of people truly like Elephant and I can at least understand why.

Nothing Matters. Last Dinner Party

The new Wet Leg and I'm hearing an intro out of the ABBA songbook? As if Agnetha has released a new song. Not much later the band sings "And I will fuck like nothing matters" The all women five piece confuses no little on its debut single. A Wet Leg Last Dinner Party is not. I will not be running to the record store on the basis of this song, contrary to 'Chaise Long' last year. I am surprised that alternative radio station Kink selected this as a single of the week recently. This is a nice pop song with a little twist at best. Nice it is but not more than that. It's like a thousand songs by girl bands that went before. The guitar solo is a little tougher, agreed, but most of the rest plays along the The Gog-Go's or Clout lines quite neatly. Nothing to get alarmed by in my book, but nice to know for sure.

Silver Moon. Boy & Bear

Not exactly a cool name, Boy & Bear, is it? Lucky for me things are about music and with Silver Moon Boy & Bear has attracted my attention. The track is a nice mix of alternative pop,  Madchester rhythm-lite and a gravelly voice. Some falsetto singing does the rest, to give the song the little edge it deserves. Last week the band released its fifth album since 2011 and if Silver Moon is anything to go on, it may be one to check out. What the song does in a good way, is that despite using very obvious chord changes, it remains interesting for the whole of the way. The nice rhythm invites some modest dancing, while the band fills the song with some nice accents to keep it lively, the guitar riff that can be heard throughout the song draws the most attention but there's more to discover. No, Silver Moon is not brilliant but nice songs exist as well and luckily so.

Stick To Your Guns. Boskat

Boskat is a duo from Antwerp in Belgium. Drummer Tibo Polleunis and guitarist Vincent Van Santfoort play a form of rock we know from another duos like Royal Blood e.g. Although The White Stripes have set the standard around 2000, Boskat is more a hardrock band than Jack and Meg White's band. The American, so country, side is absent here totally. Boskat, like all duos, creates a wall of sound where the guitar is blown up into huge proportions and the drums fill everything else. That said, the duo does play with dynamics in a good way, so that Stick To Your Guns is not just one wall of musical violence. In the softer sequence the duo takes on an emo side while also lending a little from Green Day. All in all it makes for a nice mix.

Meisjezoet.

Bescheiden zoals JJ Cale bescheiden was.

Back Where I Belong / Take it Slow. Belle Époque

Volume 1 did not make it to these pages, choices, choices, but two single did in 2021 and here is the first single of the upcoming album 'Volume II'. Danny van Tiggele, once a member of Mister & Mississippi, an ex-band that had a subscription to this blog, again works together with, mostly, a host of Dutch artists to create his second album. On the a-side it is former GEM singer Maurits Westrik who takes the lead to sing on this nice pop single that brings Van Tiggele's former band to mind. Back Where I Belong is a rich pop song with elements of country in it, not unlike what Tim Knol is capable of. Take It Slow is an instrumental in the style of a mix of Dick Dale and The Shadows. A twangy guitar is the lead instrument and fully fills in its role. Two totally different songs that show the diverse styles Van Tiggele likes to play and probably loves to listen to. There's no promises on 'Volume II' here, but I will certainly give it a spin.

Ready To Break. Lone Wolf

Where is the punkrock?, you may be asking by now. Relax, here it is. Lone Wolf is not a U.S. punkrock band but a Rotterdam, NL one. I was truly surprised when I just found out. This is U.S. stuff. This song is so nice. Lone Wolf does it everything right in Ready To Break. A superb melody is mixed with the right doses of energy and some real nice solo notes over the rhythm. It is so easy to love a song like this, simply because despite the punk energy Ready To Break is a superb pop song in disguise. It contains everything to score a hit, somewhere in the universe at least, not here I'm afraid. Try not to sing along after a minute into the song. Try not to have a smile on your face while listening. Try to sit still on your chair for that matter. Ready To Break is more than just fun or nice, it's a top single. Check it out!

Bogus Operandi. The Hives

Anyone who can tell me when was the last time I heard, let alone played a The Hives song will have a hard time convincing me. I truly have no clue. It was not in 2013, as I definitely have not a heard a song from the previous album. The Swedish punkrockers had basically left my consciousness. Bogus Operandi starts as if 'Fight For Your Right ' is covered. Well, it's almost that good. A huge riff follows that loud opening chord. A dog barks in the background (in the video only?) as if Pink Floyd's 'Dogs' is covered. When the song explodes The Hives go for it and do not plan to stop for a second. After ten years the band wants to show the world it still has it. If the upcoming album is this good, the world has very little to complain about.

One Of These Days. Queen's Pleasure

With a video showing a lot of Amsterdam in black and white Queen's Pleasure kicks off its round 2. One Of These Days is the first song towards its second album. The alternative rock has moved a little into the background, with a more poppy sound coming forward. Alternative pop, certainly, but there's no denying that Britpop feel this single has. A little Blur for example, a band perhaps in search of a Dutch support act soon? At the same time there's a sprinkling The Beatles and The Kinks in there and when all is said a done a little punkrock in the approach to this song. Decades of influences have gone into One Of These Days and come out as a song showing a lot of confidence. Queen's Pleasure knows what it wants to share with the world and does so in spunky way. Nice song it is.

False Lankum. Lankum

All the pictures on the wall’. Kortom, het was een cool feest.

Scream Into The Void. The Downhauls

A new EP by The Downhauls is a sure welcome record. The band has a subscription to this blog, it is safe to say by now. Scream Into the Void brings highly energised punkrock by an all women band that score quite good on my Veruca Salt meter.

The Downhauls is a four piece band from Boston, using all nicknames: Chrissy V: guitar and vox; Ivahna Rock: bass; LoWreck: drums and percussion and Rochelle: lead guitar, with background and harmony vocals by Tai Heatley. And it's these vocals that make the EP even better. They provide the light in the ever forward driven source of energy. As this is what defines this band more than anything else. Sparks fly could be the The Downhauls' middle name.

The single is, 'Hazy Shade Of Winter', introduced as a cover version of The Bangles' version of the Simon & Garfunkel song. Which is a totally right description. The song rocks so much more than the original and easily tops The Bangles as well, as The Downhauls are not out to please and please even more, perhaps despite itself. All the pop elements come out in a glorious manner.

The second single is opener 'Don't Care', which has that same quality. Chrissy V shows that she can write a punkrock song of significance herself. The song has some great light and shade in the dynamics, some huge screams and again, great harmonies. It's not for nothing I'm laying out my Veruca Salt meter here. The Downhauls deserve it every note in the song.

Promo photos
Listen to all the melodies the band found when arranging 'Spit The Poison Out'. This is not a song that was conceived in one go. Carefully the band must have explored the options the melody offered and tried them all until a perfect combination was created and recorded. 'Spit The Poison Out' holds a lot of energy and then all the extras were added, making the song better if not best.

The same goes for the even more energised 'Blindsight'. The hypertempo makes subtlety far harder and in comes Tai Heatley to sing harmonies with Chrissy V and Bingo! It shows the quality The Downhauls is able to bring to its songs.

Screaming into the void ought to become something of the past and fast. Screaming into thousands and thousands of fans' ears should be the correct title for this EP.

Hister. Hister

Some more music from the city of Groningen. Only one week ago Avery Plains filled these pages and today the duo Hister. With a line up of bass (Merel Weijer) and drums (Michel Weber), the duo does not present your average band line up. Instead it shows, like several others in the past decade, that it's more than possible to play melodic songs with instruments that are associated with the rhythm section of a band.

Hister plays alternative rock with a punky attitude, especially when Michel Weber is singing. He has a sort of who cares kind of attitude in his voice that comes across very convincingly in 'Komt Goud'. The song in an alternative universe would be a big hit, taking the other four songs on the EP under its arms and making sure they score as well.

For all reading this review not from The Netherlands, Hister sings in a local dialect. Although I get most of it, we are almost in the same position. Don't let it bother you, as you'll be missing out on some great alternative rocking.

With the bass in the lead, the sound on Hister is dark. The bass is played through a couple of effect pedals, making the sound bigger and tougher. Perhaps also a harmoniser, allowing for high and low, making the sound more varied. And yes, an overdub here and there. A bass remains a bass, that is the basis. And like I already shared, by playing the bass in the way Merel Weijer does, it becomes a lead instrument with ease.

Promo photo: Reyer Boxem
Final song 'Onder Wotter' shows Hister has a pop side as well. Pop like they used to make around 1980 by bands like The Police and Fischer Z. When a great single was a great single and sometimes masking the quality of an album. Things have changed so much since. Every song has to have quality these days, as they are perceived as individual songs by many with thanks to the Spotifys of this world.

It all leads to five great songs on this EP. Hister does not relent here and wants to score. The music weaves a fine threat between alternative and pop, while the body is not forgotten as well. If played live, moving will come with ease is my guess.

As a final comment, another band, album, song name and title in sync can be added. Hister the name is.

Good Riddance. Gracie Abrams

Good Riddance is in ieder geval een veel beter debuutalbum dan This Is What It Feels Like, want Gracie Abrams is in twee jaar tijd enorm gegroeid als muzikante.

Tramhaus Live. Patronaat Haarlem, Saturday 20 May 2023

Photo: Wout de Natris
Something that's good, comes fast. If not sold out, Patronaat was packed for the up and coming postpunkers Tramhaus from Rotterdam, deservedly so. Tramhaus has been able to play in the past year and it shows. The ease and confidence with which the songs were played and performed shows a band that is totally comfortable within its oeuvre and in playing it live.

Tramhaus started during the pandemic. Members who picked up a different instrument than played in other bands before. A drummer who became singer, if I remember correctly. Members studying for exams while being interviewed. In this environment the first songs were conceived, leading up to the first single 'I Don't Sweat' / 'Karen Is A Punk'. Both are a blueprint for the band's repertoire right up to today. Postpunk is the easiest description with forays into the real punk thing. If anything, Tramhaus is living proof of good things coming out of the pandemic.

Listening to the songs live I have the impression, again, that Tramhaus are masters in finding the most unlikely notes still fitting within the restraints a certain chord progression allows for. To get away with it gloriously. The groove is always there and within that groove the most unlikely accents are to be found as well. To make it fit anyway takes concentration and comfort within that groove. The most surprising thing, perhaps, is that the music remains danceable as well. That groove, right.

Tramhaus is all about the music and then there's singer Lukas Jansen. He has enough energy to lead the band and the voice that allows for all the screams. He is present alright. With a hairstyle that would put him more in line with Goldband, he looks like a very unlikely punkrocker. Yet, he is. His energy is reflected by the band as a whole in two ways. The first is how the other four return his energy. Secondly, in how much fun they have in playing the songs. Besides the concentration that is obvious to see to play the complexer parts of the songs, there are always smiles and singing along away from the microphone, by all four bandmembers.

Photo: Wout de Natris
The two guitarists, Micha Zaat and Nadya van Osnabrugge, are constantly playing off one another. From rhythm to lead lines/melodies switching the whole of the time. From brute noise to delicate notes and back. Behind them there is some tough bass playing by Julia Vroegh and the tight, often inventive drumming by Jim Luijten. The two are truly the motor of Tramhaus, allowing the others to shine, taking turns to do so.

There's one thing that worries me. Tramhaus could well be the future of rock and roll. Looking around me, I could only think what future? A lot of us present do not have that much future left and may not be around long enough to see that future in the mid-long term. Where is the youth? There must be some left not into rappers and whatever? I didn't see a lot of them. The up side is that I saw a lot of people walking off with the EP and t-shirts under their arms.

Back to the music. It was great to see songs like 'Make It Happen', 'Amour Amour', 'The Goat' and especially 'Night Shift' (did I get that title right?) live. Summing up, Tramhaus live totally delivered on the basis of the promise the records made. Great band.

2023. Week 20, 10 singles

Week 20 and the sun is finally out, In a week where it was colder during the day on Ascension Day then at midnight on New Year's Eve, I was outside without a coat in mid-winter, we of WoNoBlog present another 10 singles that were released recently. From real favourites, to total newbies and a band that exist over 30 years and is on te blog for the first time. It's all here and perhaps more.Enjoy!

Faithless Lover. Reb Fountain

With 'Iris' behind her, including an international tour of which I was able to see the Amsterdam/Paradiso show, New Zealand singer and songwriter Reb Fountain returns with a new and majestic single. Unsurprisingly so, as majestic must be her middle name. Faithless Lover is a ballad of the kind Ms. Fountain is an expert at but also one that keeps growing in passion and conviction. It starts ever so small. Just her voice and an organ playing long held chords. From there the song is built up, slowly but surely. Drawing the listener in ever closer. Although there is a slight resemblance to Adele's 'James Bond' theme song, it happens to be my favourite Adele song, so double points as far as I'm concerned. Faithless Lover takes another turn in time and grows into an epic, if modest one, ballad. The strings are let loose, digital and real if my ears are not mistaken. In the end it all winds down once again but by then Reb Fountain has long made her point to this faithless person. She has found her words, as she shares them with us. A great new single.

Orbit. Dream Wife

You can find Dream Wife on this blog since the release of the band's first, self-named album in 2018. Orbit is a single from the upcoming album, 'Social Lubrication'. Not that much has changed. Although I'd say that Dream Wife's members have become better players and arrangers. The combination of infectious punkrock and -pop is still there. The band simply makes better use of the options this music offers. Listen to how dynamics are used in the verses. Just bass and drums supporting the singing, joined by a muted guitar sound. The chorus lets it all rip with a great riff and harmony and background shouts.  Icelandic singer Rakel Mjöll really goes at it here, showing the different sides to her voice. Her bandmates Alice Go (guitar) and Bella Podpadec (bass) fill up all (and there must be a hired drummer involved). June 9 the album is released. In the meantime we'll remain in orbit thanks to Orbit.

Let's Talk About It. Angela Tini and Big Sandy

Are you ready for a time machine experience? With Let's Talk About It you are about to undergo one. Angela Tini makes music of the kind they used to make a long, long time ago. As in the kind of music my mother may have listened to in her years in Canada before she got married. Angela Tini and band seem to come straight out of the fifties, from before rock and roll even or at best the kind Pat Boone played. When all that has been said and done, this duet with singer Big Sandy is great fun, if totally outdated for 2023. The pleasure of playing and singing together simply jumps out of the song. The band has this obvious swing, without having to lay it on in a thick manner. It's simply there. The saxophone solo is one out of the Cookie and The Cupcakes songbook. A rolling piano is what provides the icing on the cake. Will I make it through a whole album? Probably not, in the meantime I'm enjoying Let's Talk About It thoroughly.

Killing Time. Reach NYC

From the darkness of an inner hell to a new single. That description serves Killing Time well. Started in 1996 as Reach 454, the band released its first album in 2003, to play its last live show in 2004. Reach NYC circled around better known bands like Linkin Park and Papa Roach but never made it to the same level. Some 20 years later the band, in a partly new line up resurfaces with a potent rock single, like they used to make them a few decades ago. The energy is there and the riffs are convincing. Showing that writing a good rock song has little to do with age. "Taking drugs is how I'm killing time", René Mata sings. Let's hope that playing music is his new way for killing time. It will surely allow Reach NYC to have a chance of making it, with the assistance of a record deal in Germany. Fans of the afore mentioned bands should pay attention.

Alan's Song. Evidence of Struggle

An instrumental. For me at least, this is the hardest to write a review on. Strange in a way, as I do not really pay attention to the lyrics at first and more to the melody. Now let this be where Evidence of Struggle delivers with ease. There's no singing on Alan's Song but there's no doubt what the vocal melody would be here. The guitar leads the way and this amounts to the first impressions I would have had, had there been a singer. Evidence of Struggle is William P. C. Simmons V a.k.a. Rev. Billy Simmons. The multi-instrumentalist plays all on this song himself. Being instrumental and rock the epitaph postrock is usually glued to the music. It's a term that does not help me a lot. Alan's Song, inspired by a conversation Simmons had with a friend called Alan, is a rock song, yet extremely melodic. No one is doing extremely difficult things here. If anything, I would call in progrock as Alan's song has a few distinctive parts and tempo changes. Most importantly, the song rocks.

Monaco. Bianca James

Driving cars down by the Mediterranean always brings to mind the Tony Curtis - Roger Moore series 'The Persuaders' from the early 70s. The reason I bring this up is because Bianca James uses the image  to describe her new single Monaco, the small princedom on the Mediterranean. The description works double, as Monaco does evoke the pop feel coming with the 'The Persuaders' soundtrack. That 60s b-movie music with a little organ and girls dancing to pre-disco beats, in the dancing. Where the sound is concerned Bianca James' single is far more modern. A song could not sound this way in 1966. She catches the vibe of old quite good though. Bianca James dreams big. Coming from Montreal in Canada, Monaco and surroundings is where she would like to be. It will be several months before we are allowed to hear more. Her album is released after the summer. Monaco is a nice, extremely retro-poppy introduction.

The Score. Grian Chatten

A solo album by Fontaines D.C. singer Grian Chatten? Isn't that a bit early in his career with the band going so well? Perhaps. Fact is, if The Score is anything to go by, his solo album 'Chaos For The Fly', out on 30 June, is totally different from his band. The motivation he provides is a sound one. "I have songs that do not fit the direction of our new songs and I do not want to force a direction on the other writers in the band". The Score reminds me in a way of Kaizers Orchestra's singer Janove Ottensen's solo album after three albums into that band's career almost 20 years ago. Far more subdued, singer-songwriter kind of music and not the big band outing. The Score has the same dreamy atmosphere 'Francis' Lonely Nights' has. An acoustic guitar drives the song. Chatten is singing, yes, with his softest voice and together with producer Dan Carey decided what else could fit in there and is, sparsely, used. The result is a track full of modesty, that leads up to a song that is worth paying attention to. If you do not, you could easily miss it coming by. Yes. I'm curious for more.

A Child’s Question, August. PJ Harvey

I missed out on all early and mid albums of Polly Jean Harvey. There was no space where I could relate with them in the 90s and 00s. Something changed with the newer albums and here is the announcement of the optimistically titled (not), 'I Inside the Old Year Dying'. The first single Ms. Harvey releases in 2023 is a mysterious one. Almost as if a ghost found a way to record and release a song. At the same time PJ Harvey sings in a way that I can only call childlike, naive, while daring to go as deep as she is physically capable of. 'I Inside the Old Year Dying' will be her first album since 2016. In the years in between she doubted her will to continue as a musician, getting fed up with the cycle she was caught up in. The inner struggle has led to this mysterious music. A Child's Question, August is ethereal. There's music, there are instruments but besides the drumming, it could be anything that is being played. With that voice soothing and alerting at the same time. I can't tell yet, but this might just become one of the important releases of 2023.

The Chasm. Justine and The Unclean

It's six years ago already that I was introduced to Justine Covault and band. In the mean time she became a record label boss, releasing many-a great band from Boston and beyond. Finally she has found the time to treat us to some more music with The Unclean. Expect some good old garage-powerpop rock. After a soft intro, the band goes at it. There's no stopping the drummer, while the bass player went into the studio with the assumption she's the lead guitarist. Just listen to the fantastic melodies coming out of her amp. One of the great features of The Chasm. Of course there's a real blistering solo as well, reminding me of many great rock solo's from the past. Over it all, Justine Covault only has to do what she's good at, singing a pop-rock song in the style of Blondie at the time of 'Plastic Letters'. The Chasm is a nice warm up for things to come.

After All. Texas

To finish this week, I have a blast from the past. I was still at university when Texas entered my life. Not that I became a fan. The band was usually somewhere at the side of everything I liked. Whether the band released anything since the 1990s, I couldn't even tell you. For 2023 a greatest hits compilation is announced and this single. New, old, remake? It doesn't matter. Sharlene Spiteri is as charming as ever, her voice a little deeper than I remember. After All is a pleasant song with a nice drive. If anything the song reminds me of the better The Pretenders songs. That may be an explanation why I like After All. Spiteri's voice comes close to Chrissie Hynde's in 2023. The musical details in the song give it a nice finish. Little melodies, extra instruments, they are all there demanding attention for a short while. I have not listened to any Texas song, consciously, for at least two decades, but this may become my all time favourite. Who said that miracles no longer exist?

Forever Forever. Genevieve Artadi

Promo pasfoto

Be-Bop-A-Lula is zo lekker. Zo lekker en lief als het origineel.

Island Of Love. Island Of Love

Multiple guitars ring out. A big bass supports them and the drums bang away. It all sounds very familiar and instantly likeable. Islands Of Love taps into music coming at least from thirty years ago without moving into the heaviest grunge type music of Smashing Pumpkins. The album rocks no little and adds the melodies of the Britpop era. A nice combination.

Island Of Love is a band from the U.K., London more specifically and the first band signed to the London subsidiary of Third Man Records, of Jack White fame. It tells you something when a band is the first one to be signed. If you ask me, it's a miracle it was still walking around free. Having worked DIY so far, this step is a huge jump for the band.

The band is a trio, Karim Newble on guitars/vocals, Linus Munch on guitars/vocals and Daniel Giraldo on bass. So who is that huge drummer, or is it AI or programmed? If so, it sounds very convincing.

Where the music is concerned, I can keep it fairly short. All you need to know is that Island Of Love rocks. It never holds back a lot. Yes, there is some dabbling with dynamics but for the rest the band goes all out and keeps going. Expect some Dinosaur Jr., like in 'Grow', but also the grunge that came after. It all keeps the band decades away from today, yet fitting in nicely with a lot of bands with guitars of today. Think Personal Trainer here in NL. You will find a little variation in music styles as well. Trotting of the beaten path as it were.

Promo Photo
Island Of Love fits in with a lot of the alternative rock bands churning out records in the 20s. Where it does not fit in with, is the postpunk batch of weird riffs and semi-spoken lyrics. This band rocks, although there is a semi-drunken pub brawl called 'Sweet Loaf', where things appear a little out of hand. When the song finally gets going, Lou Reed comes around like in his 'Street Hassle' and 'The Bells' period.

The clock goes back to rock with 'I've Got The Secret' where the band goes into overdrive and as close to punkrock as it gets. As I wrote above, there is a hint at Britpop but for a U.K. band, it is the U.S. that wins out out here. Fans of alternative rock from that country can start slowly walking to the record store. Thick riffs, heavy solo's and dark rhythm guitars are all over the place. As close to the real thing a new band can come, according to my two cents. The cover is another story. Toy Dolls inspired? Let me stop there.
