I Am June. Romy Liz Rose (2)

The Sky Knows I Exist. Naaz

Never Have I Ever afleverde.

2026, week 20. 10 singles

Today you will find a bunch of octogenarians in the singles section and all with songs that are vibrant and full of life totally belying their age. At that age one can know what will be the last you'll do. If this over time will be proven to be the last, all can be tremendously pleased with these efforts. To compensate there a few very new names as well, some even debut records. In other words, more than enough to explore and enjoy!

Rome. Brook Fox

And yet another debut on the blog. He is an indie-pop/rock artist from South-West Wales who knows exactly how the light and the shade works in his music. My take is that his main influences come from the post-grunge era with bands like Creed and that band with the hit 'Outside' that I keep forgetting the name of, Staind? Brook Fox' own contribution is the pop element he throws into the mix, making Rome far less darker than the bands I mentioned. That said, he knows how to make his band rock and handles the light and the shade to perfection, giving an audience a moment to rest before everyone can explode into the song once again. Rome is aimed for festival fields in the way it is set up and it is working as far as I'm concerned.

Still In The Race EP. RubinCarter

RubinCarter is Queen's Pleasure drummer Sal Rubinstein turned singer-songwriter. After the release of singles announcing his debut EP, we can listen to the whole work. The songs started in his bedroom playing an acoustic guitar just for his own pleasure. Slowly but surely he realised these songs should be heard by more people. With help from his friends the songs and RubinCarter took shape. Ruben Carter became a famous name because of the Bob Dylan - Jacques Levy composition 'Hurricane', more than because of his boxing career and trial. Do not expect Bob Dylan style music here. The EP kicks off with the alternative rock track 'Unentertained'. A song that goes for the big sound, with a huge lead guitar and background vocals. The exact right song to put on pole position, because it is the kind of song that can define a career. In theory 'Unentertained' is a song to play in a stadium and to have that as your first song on your first EP is an asset. With 'Frame' the mood goes down, but again RubinCarter shows to know what it takes to arrange a song in such a way that it catches the ear. Going deeper into the EP, it becomes clear Sal Rubinstein is showing us what he is capable of. His goal was not to create a musically consistent EP. 'April' is a ballad with a fingerpicked acoustic guitar. It is not my favourite song on the EP but it certainly shows courage to present such a different song. 'Still In The Race' is also a ballad but of a different sort. The slide guitar gives the song a distinct rock feel as does the main riff. So is the final song, 'Money Machine'. Setting the easy scoring opening rock track apart, 'Money Machine' is the song that impresses me most. It has this easy going vibe, while at the same time being able to make a great impression on me. Without making a grand effort during the first impression, 'Money Machine' is the kind of song that slowly but surely turns into a anthem.  A modest one but an anthem nonetheless."Lalala" sometimes is enough to do the trick. RubinCarter is a name to watch alright.

ESO. The Bernadette Maries

The Bernadette Maries from Brussels return with its second single. ESO is a song with two faces. It all starts out as an alternative rock song. In fact I can call it grunge without any qualms. Nirvana is all over the intro. The light and the shade between verse and chorus? Check. The two guitar line up is used to create a lighter mood and a darker one. Before the two minutes mark things change. Let's call it psychedelic, that interlude. Not that the world becomes all wobbly and out of focus, it still qualifies. The drums come in with a high and fast rhythm after which singer/bassist Daria takes over the lead vocals. By then the song has been totally set on its head. I have to admit, I like the first part better, yet surprising it is. Two singles down, upcoming album 'Soft' is an album to look out for. We have a, hopefully, glorious summer in front of us first, as the release date is set for 18 September.

Ride. The Chelsea Curve

Click The Chelsea Curve in this blog's search engine and one single after the other pops up. Promoted by the late Justine Covault, the band came into my life thanks to her and I liked the band better by the single. Come 2026 and here's the band once again with single Ride from the already released album 'The Rideout'. Like a song with a title like it should, it is about riding, a motorcycle in this case. Linda Pardee (bass, vocals, keys) and Tim Gillis (guitars, vocals, keys) are joined by their new drummer Bruce Caporal. The trio rocks in a very familiar way, more U.K. than the U.S. A band like The Who comes to mind from the time when they were able to blend pop and rock in a perfect way. Mixed a little into the background is the warm sound of a Hammond organ, but mostly the guitars, bass and drums are rocking no little. The Chelsea Curve adds some delicious pop elements in the background vocals and packs Ride with some great rock riffs as well. Do things come much better than this? I doubt it. Brilliant single.

Home To Us. Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr

It's 2026 and 50% of The Beatles release a single together. In the year Paul turns 84 and Ringo 86, the two present a song that is simply great fun. You won't hear me saying this is their best work, but it is good. In the lyrics they look back at their youth, when where you lived was simply called home, no matter how you might look at the house or you think of the circumstances today. The song has a strong pop vibe with some Status Quo light overtones. The two alternate on vocals, with Ringo singing in a slightly different voice than normal, fitting Home To Us perfectly. Just close your eyes for two seconds and imagine that all four were still alive and working together. That  would have made a very decent single, ranking there with George's 'Handle Me With Care' by The Travelling Wilburys for example. In fact, I haven't heard a better song by Paul than Home To Us since I don't know when. There's a new album in the stars, ‘The Boys O f Dungeon Lane’ and its release date is 29 May.

In The Stars. The Rolling Stones

Yes, I'm a fan since like forever. No not from the beginning. I'm not that old. But let's face it, In The Stars is a tossaway kind of Stones song. Sure, it's nice and the "ooooooo" part does give it a little extra. Yet, I have 'Undercover Of The Night', 'She Was Hot', 'One Hit To The Body' and 'Rock And A Hard Place', to name a few of the average Stones singles already in my collection. In The Stars does not add a lot more. On the positive side. There is a new Stones single and yes, it sounds energetic. Andrew Watt does get the best out of the Jagger-Richard material of the 2020s and Jagger is a 82 year old force of nature. The man must be so fit that not even his voice wears down. The hard life seems to be catching up with Keith Richards. To give the song some credit, the way the song plays out, with the piano coming in, I may take a shine to it any way. The details are nicer than I thought at first. Only two more months and we'll know more about 'Foreign Tongues', including, once again, Paul McCartney.

Arrogant Boy. Deep Purple

Established in 1968, also Deep Purple is releasing a new album in 2026, 'Splat!' and listening to Arrogant Boy, the band is in top form. The song goes off in classic hard rock, metal, symphonic rock directions as if its the most normal thing in the world. The three from the Mach II line up and most famous one, Gillan, Glover, Paice and keyboard player Don Airey around for the whole of this century, are joined by new guitarist Simon McBride. Together the rock like it is 1970 something. The guitar playing in the verses wasn't invented then though. Think Metallica or something like it. Next, Marillion comes in and a little Bowie in the singing in the "Billy" interlude part. There's so much energy here that it is inconceivable that I'm listening to older senior citizens of around 80. Arrogant Boy is pure power and more importantly, a great song.

Only Free When Sleeping. Big Special

With two records in two years and one stand alone single, the announcement of a new EP by Big Special shows that the band is in a hurry to show more of itself. 'O'Joy' will be out on 5 June. It is said to contain the songs that did not fit on both albums. Those following the band will not be surprised by Only Free When Sleeping. Vocalist Joe Hicklin does his mix of rapping/talking singing in his Midlands accent, while drummer Callum Moloney points the direction of the song through his relentless rhythm. Who does all else that we hear, I don't know. Only Free When Your Sleeping is a strong song, like the best songs of the duo are. There's always urgency that is brought across and not only because of the vocal delivery. The whole song wants its listeners to move and move some more. Yes, it's undeniable, I like Big Special, even if it is a bit outside of my usual musical habitat.

Mess. Tape Toy

Tape Toy debuted on this blog with a single of its EP 'Launch The Rocket' in January 2025. Today the band is back with the up tempo, almost creating a hunted down kind of tempo of Mess. Don't expect originality, as I've heard a song like this so many times before. What Mess does present is a truckload of positive energy, fun and little surprises all throughout the song. The song announces an as yet unnamed album to be released in September. Based on what I'm hearing here, it should be great fun. The mix of a modern sounding lo-fi song with all the modernity electronics and samples can add, presents a song that is simply filled with inventions, additions, weirdness, to return to the kind of art rock bands like The Mo and The Kewi University of Swing were already making around 1980. Then add that tempo and you have Mess. Tape Toy, a band to be on the lookout for.

Just Love. Reluctant Bob & The Lonely Lovers

Just Love is the kind of pure pop that came into fashion a long time ago and somewhere in the 1970s went out again, after bubblegum bands like The Rubettes and Showaddywaddy, who rehashed the feel from the decade before, went out of fashion. I never hear these two examples anymore. The originals from the 1960s still seem to come by and may forever come by when new generations take a look a their grandparents' records collection (or Tik Tok or Spotify of course). That makes Just Love pure nostalgia for a time long gone, but no less fun. Just listen to those guitar notes, the sweet harmony vocals, the way the piano adds to the fun. In a way the song reminds me most of The Rutles, Eric Idle's The Beatles parody. Just Love would have fit perfectly on the album, without parodying a The Beatles song in a superb way. Well done, Reluctant Bob & The Lonely Lovers.

Clipping. Special Friend

Indie rock of good to best quality can come from anywhere in the world today. The exclusivity of the U.S.A. and the U.K. has long been cracked by bands from other countries. A prove of point is Special Friend's third album, and first on this blog, 'Clipping'.

Special Friend plays that kind of sparkling indie rock that gives the songs a pop feel like a glass bubbling over when pouring Coke or beer in too fast. Right at the very start 'Paints A Picture' shows it with that bubbly guitar part that works its way throughout most of the song. Add the voices of Guillaume and Erica, who weave in and out of each other and despite the song holding a little melancholy streak, the sun starts shining instantly. (And it is in abundance while writing.)

Special Friend is an French-American duo from Paris, consisting of Erica Ashleson (drums, vocals) and Guillaume Siracusa (guitar, vocals). They alternate lead vocals, but also weave their vocals regularly, with different lyrics at that. They formed Special Friend in 2018 and with Clipping release their third album. Clipping was recorded at Studio Claudio by Alexis Fugain and Margaux Bouchaudon. Between them they decided to expand on the duo setting, making it impossible to play live what you hear on record, but all the more interesting. Just listen to the experimental 'Mustard' for example.

Photo: Jules Vandales
The whole is an enrichment of the duo setting though. An overdubbed guitar, a synth or organ, all make the sound of the band fuller and essential. More so, because the songs of Special Friend are well above the average. They got to me during the first listening session and from there grew a little more each time. Whether more up tempo or slower like in 'Mold', where Erica Ashleson harmonises with herself, the duo always finds an angle that makes the song interesting to listen to, multiple times.

What I like especially, is how the mood of Clipping, which in general can be called light, can be changed with just a little growl of an extra guitar or just a few extra notes added to the song. With a minimum of effort, a song comes alive even more. You can find a few examples all through the album. Add a detail like this to all that already makes Clipping stand out and the band convinced me I'm listening to something special.

Concerns Of Wasps And Willows. The Corner Laughers

The Corner Laughers is one of the weirdest band names I've encountered over the past decades. Based on the music the band presents us, I can image the members laughing all the way home from the sheer joy of playing it.

How to describe this music? The Corner Laughers blends a host of influences into its songs that all together make me want to listen more, besides putting on a smile to my state of mind. It's the kind of music that makes me feel happy instantly. Somehow it is a perfect blend of U.K. and U.S. pop from long ago.

The Corner Laughers are from northern California and consists of Karla Kane (vocals, ukulele), Khoi Huynh (bass, vocals and more), KC Bowman (guitar, vocals and more) and Charlie Crabtree (drums). Together they manage to create a lightness in their sound as if gravity does not exist and there isn't a worry left in the world. Some might call this escapism, but I'm certain that is not the driving force behind The Corner Laughers. The members must love it to find the best elements for a song and putting them into a transparent arrangement and mix.

It all starts with the voice of Karla Kane. On the one hand it's mature and not only because this is not a young woman singing. The maturity comes through in her timbre. On the other hand it has this innocence that shines through in the way she is able to sing, while remaining instantly convincing. The male voices behind her manage to sing with a lightness that underscores both Ms Kane and the touch of the band's music. It brings songs like 'Frank Mills', a hit over here for singer Bojoura in 1969 and Lulu's 'Boom Bang-a-Bang' that co-won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1969 to mind. Pure pop, blending the U.S. and U.K., like I said.

Press photo
The music has a pop vibe as well from a time when a part of the pop music was full of innocence. Let me give you one example that stands out for me. It's in a song that is different, because of the following. The way the piano, played by Octavia Kane, is played on 'Crumb Clean', adds that touch of innocence. It reminds me of the way the piano was used in the romantic singles of The Kinks from circa 1966-67. You will hear the folk and country influences in the soft-toned lead lines of the guitar. Concerns Of Wasps And Willows brings so much to mind, that my head is nearly reeling but before all pleased by what I'm hearing. The Corner Laughers just do things right on this album.

Single 'Rainbow Cardigan' was the band's debut on this blog and made me want to hear more. That more is now hear and I'm quite content to have invested time in the album. Up tempo or a little more slower and sad, the songs are made in great taste and with a fantastic pop feel. The band may sound totally anachronistic in the modern music landscape, but when a record is good, it's good. Sometimes a conclusion is at simple as that.

Move On With The Year. Alice Costelloe

En Move On With The Year wordt alleen maar mooier en interessanter.

Heerlijk album.

2026, week 11. 10 singles

There are days when there are no words left. This is one of them.

Pretty. Honey I'm Home

Honey I'm Home is a Dutch shoegaze band consisting of Thom Schotanus, Sofie Ooteman, Jasper Meurs, Hugo de Groot en Evelien Keesmaat that makes its debut on this blog. Pretty is a song that holds optimistic singing and a darker sound. It mixes a pop vibe, in the vocal delivery as much as in the lead lines, with the darker and somewhat sluggish rhythm. The combination certainly works. Pretty has the rhythm of songs that were popular in the 1990s of which I have long ago forgotten the name of. That bouncy kind of rhythm and singer(s) who was (were) always somewhere between singing and rapping. Honey I'm Home's singers sing, so let there be no mistake there. Pretty is fun track with a nice dark edge.

Ground Kiss. youbet

youbet is the second band making its debut on this blog this week. With Ground Kiss the band delivers an alternative rock track. If you could hold it in your hands, you would have to wash your hands immediately afterwards. Ground Kiss has that dark and dirty sound that actually makes it very attractive to listen to. Songwriter Nick Llobet started youbet and was later joined by Micah Prussack, while producer Katie Von Schleicher works once again with the duo. The single moves between an indie track with two voices to distorted guitar eruptions that upset everything and everybody. Fire spouts from the record in those moments. Album 'youbet' will be released on 1 May.

You’re Only Good To Calm Me Down. Caitlin

And here's a third new name on the blog this week. Caitlin is a singer-songwriter from New Zealand who is on route to release her fourth EP, 'Guardrails', on 10 April. With You’re Only Good To Calm Me Down, not a very stimulating title, is it?, Caitlin sets a mood that is somewhere between positive and moody. Despite being mid tempo, the drummer gives the song a tempo that could go on forever. The addition of the banjo, playing just a few notes, gives the song an alternative country flavour. In the meantime Caitlin just keeps singing, seemingly unperturbed by what is going on around her. Her voice is soft and pleasant, contrasting nicely with the electric guitar. This is a really nice indiepop song.

I Go Up, You Go Down. My Precious Bunny

I Go Up, You Go Down is one of the outcomes of Lily Wolter's relation breakup, moving in with her parents again and the world closing down due to the Covid crisis. Adding all that I Go Up, You Go Down is up, it is a miracle that the single sounds as light as it does. Not that it is a festive and multi-coloured affair but not pitch black either. My Precious Bunny presents itself as an indie singer-songwriter before estranging elements are let into the song. All the weird sounds and treated voices remind me of Carol Cleveland Sings and Pickle Darling. They are let go off, just as easily as they return. It makes I Go Up, You Go Down extremely fun and intriguing to listen to. My Precious Bunny is not caught on one loop but more than you can count. And, yes, this is the fourth new name this week.

Overflow. dEUS

No, dEUS is not a new name of course. The band is celebrating the (circa) thirty year anniversary of its first two albums, 'Worst Case Scenario' (1994) and 'In A Bar, Under The Sea' (1996). Overflow is a long forgotten b side. It is a beautiful, alternative ballad. Slow, with a country flow in the instrumentation. The reverb on the single electric guitar notes gives the song a sound that Madrugada built a career on. Very U.S. of course. It gives the single such a great vibe. Overflow is sad and restrained jubilation in one. It is also nothing like what I remember of dEUS at the time. Perhaps the reason it was just a b side at the time and in 2026 the lead single for the re-releases. I did not know dEUS had this in it.

Look Forward In Anger. Ultrabomb

Only a few weeks ago I played David Bowie's 'Lodger' album one again and just like always I was struck by the powerful rocker 'Look Back In Anger'. One of Bowie's best album tracks ever. In 2026 Ultrabomb, Greg Norton (Hüsker Dü), Derek O’Brien (Social Distortion, Agent Orange, Adolescents) and Ryan Smith (Soul Asylum), releases a new single called Look Forward In Anger. The band can only wish the song is as good as its opposite titled one. That said, "forward" is stark rocker, punky, powerful, with a couple of nice riffs and a fiery guitar solo flying around. The rock veterans know exactly what they are doing and deliver abundantly.

God's A Lonely Man (feat. Iggy Pop). Anna Calvi

This year Iggy turns 79. Who could ever have imagined that in the early 1970s? Anna Calvi and Pop have an artist that joins them, David Bowie. Calvi played a part in the live rendition of 'Black Star'. Iggy Pop was produced by Bowie in the 70s and co-wrote several songs together, some of his biggest hits and a couple for Bowie as well. Anna Calvi and Iggy Pop produced a single that could have been on either 'The Idiot' or 'Lust For Life' with ease. Except that Anna Calvi was not yet born at the time. God's A Lonely Man is a dirty rock song with a typical rhythm. Calvi let's Iggy take the centre stage in the vocals. At first he sounds his age but slowly but surely Iggy gets into his stride and becomes just Iggy Pop. Still going strong.

Jardin. Yori

Dutch singer-songwriter Yori Swart returns to this blog with a modern sounding single. The singing, partly in French. mostly in English, sounds like a traditional French sigh girl did a long time ago. That mix of innocence while hinting at things catholic girls knew despite mister pastor's efforts, is compelling and convincing in Jardin. Musically, the song is part sigh girl, part modern rhythms and part Mano Chao style samples. The mix of it all resulted in a song that is extremely pleasant to listen to. Yori is no girl any more in 2026 and that shows in the way she presents the song. Jardin is bittersweet sharing the positive and negative sides of life in equal parts, making Jardin a very mature song.

Hey Little. Bonny Prince Billy

Bonny Prince Billy is of course Bonny Prince Billy. No matter who he works with, his voice is always the same. On Hey Little he sings with Catherine Irwin (again), a voice that really contrasts with his own voice. She has a country style voice, while Will Oldham is Bonny Prince Billy. Hey Little is a slow song and adorned by a string quartet. Very surprising is the clarinet solo from Thomas Deakin that pops up from the strings for a few seconds. As a whole, Hey Little is as modest as it is present. Oldham has created another little pearl, celebrating but also containing the sorrowful realisation how fast his daughter is growing up. Hey Little Girl is Bonny Prince Billy and yet somehow very different. It shows how an artist can still surprise while still operating in the same musical environment. Just as surprising is the ending that seems to come out of nowhere.

Comets. Arrows of Athena

In April 2024 Arrows of Athena debuted on this blog with the single 'Reckless Heart'. I did not encounter anything in between. In that post I pointed to German duo Para Lia and that was the same name that popped to mind listening to Comets for the first time. Boston duo Jac-Lyn Gibson and Scott Lerner again presents an alternative rock track with firm grounding in the 1990s. The lyrics are based on the life of French wine and champagne pioneer Madame Clicquot, I suppose of the still well-known 'Veuve Clicquot'. Comets is a song that is filed to the brim with guitar parts. Scott Lerner is not afraid of stacking guitar parts towards epic proportions. The same goes for Jac-Lyn Gibson who shows of her different voices as well. If I have to compare voices, I would opt for Shirley Manson (Garbage). Comets is a song that rocks and no little at that.

Blue Reminder. Hand Habits

If You Asked For A Picture. Blondshell

Two years ago I crowed loudly over single and album opener 'Veronica Mars' from Blndshell's eponymous debut album. It is time to take a close listen  to album number two that was released a few weeks ago.

Blondshell is still Sabrina Teitelbaum from L.A. She's responsible for all the songs on the album, a few co-written with others. To my surprise she does not play a single instrument on the album. The (multi) instrumentalists that worked with her and producer Yves Rothman created a coherent sound.

The album opens with an indie pop track this time around. 'Thumbtack' has a melancholy vibe as if something has come and gone and not remembered fondly. There's a little Lana del Rey in the way the song is presented. The 50s vibe is totally missing though. Especially in this lyric that I have never heard Doris Day sing, "I let you keep a ball chain on my leg"?

Next up is the first rocker of the album. 'T & A' is a song that belies living in the sun the whole year round. Musically we have moved into the 00s and the kind of rock that came out the U.S. at the time. It is where I like Blondshell to be. The rock side fits her voice very well and allows her to show the different shades she can sing in. High, lower and that soft form of screaming that adds great harmonies here and there. Sabrina Teitelbaum has so much variation in her voice that it makes for pleasant and surprising listening. 'Arms' is a good example of her vocal prowess. She comes close to Wolf Alice's Ellie Rowsell here.

I'll admit that I sort of forgot about Blondshell's new album. It disappeared in that huge digital stack that reaches me. And then a cd landed on my doorstep. It only took a few songs in for me to realise that I'd made a bad mistake, i.e. overlooking If You Asked For A Picture. Where I wrote of 'Blondshell' that it contained several good songs but was not among the best albums in its genre, on this album I can only write that Blondshell set the steps that I hoped the artist would set. Yes, some sounds may sound familiar but all are used in a clever and good way, giving body to a song.

The point that strikes me most, is how convincing nearly all the songs sound. Whether fast or slower, loud or softer, Blondshell delivers.in spades. If You Asked For A Picture, a line she lent from poet Mary Oliver, is a mature indie/alternative rock album. It even visits the Tony Soprano Memorial Centre in New Jersey. Now what more can a Soprano's fan ask for?

Roxwell. Mathilda Mann

Sounds Made By Humans. Brian Bilston and The Catenary Wires

Those paying attentions will have noticed the two singles that came by in the past months, 'Alexa, What Is There To Know About Love' and 'Every Song On The Radio Reminds Me Of You'. U.K. poet Brian Bilston has teamed up with The Catenary Wires. Together they've set poems of Bilston to music in a mix of spoken word and singing. In this fashion they created songs that are extremely pleasant to listen to.

Brian Bilston is a modern style poet, who started with releasing his poems online and from there created a huge following, including live performances. The Catenary Wires consists of Amelia Fletcher, Rob Pursey, Ian Button and Fay Hallam on keyboard. Previously they have released three albums.

Sounds Made By Humans is an album that in all ways is very British. The music is a mix of 80s indie, think The Smiths and new wave, smart Britpop like Blur and indie folk and pop from bands like Belle and Sebastian. It results in songs that are either light of sound and intricate. There are exceptions like '31 Rules For Midlife Rebellion', that is more an alternative form of hip hop. It's like Bilston says "never ever follow rules". But there's far more to it than just light guitar work and sweet singing. 'As I Grow Old I Will March Not Shuffle' is almost dark rock.

I started my 'Alexa, What Is There To Know About Love' review with a line like I do not have a brain for poetry. To end my review of 'Every Song On The Radio Reminds Me Of You' that many lyrics are poetry of course. And, yes, I do not always understand (the deeper meaning of) lyrics either. Lyrics are there to listen to but just as much, if not more to sing along with. That makes it a lot easier than reading poetry. Enter Sounds Made By Humans.

Photo: Simon Robinson
Now several poems here are in part descriptions of every day life or an "adventure" that happened. Set to music and lyrics they are easy to follow. On the basis of the singles, I had already surrendered and with the album I am certainly more than okay. The changes in the musical genre makes the album even more intriguing. The Catenary Wires manages to keep the listener on his toes for the whole record as the variations it presents, is simply great fun.

Yes, I was sceptical when I read the concept but gave it a chance anyway and have become quite a content listener to Sounds Made By Humans.

Forever Is A Feeling. Lucy Dacus

2025, week 16. 10 singles

Easter weekend. I made a typo typing eater weekend. It can be called that of course. A few days with the family, food, drinks, Easter eggs and most likely less time to read a blog or listen to new music. Here are ten new songs anyway, so enjoy! And, Happy Easter!

Throw A Fist. The Northern Line

Just listen how Throw A Fist starts. The Northern Line lays down an irresistible groove. I won't say it's like The Stone Roses but the concept certainly is. Drums and at least two percussive instruments play for 10 seconds, bar two short bursts on a Hammond organ. Then the bass joins in and  the organ starts playing a melody. Guitar one joins the rhythm and then guitar two starts playing the main riff over that strong groove. Only at 40 seconds the singer joins with "I never felt so low". That may be, by after that 40 seconds I'm in high spirits. What a great groove and what an upbeat song Throw A Fist is. The Massachusetts band relive the Britpop days of the mid 90s, with a band like The Charlatans in mind, think its album 'Up To Here' e.g. It seems like I did not judge so positively on The Northern Line's debut single 'Lightning Strikes', as you cannot find it on this blog. Throw A Fist is and rightly so. What a groove!

Nothing. Sex Scenes

Nothing starts with a groove as well, but here we are in punk territory immediately. Sex Scenes is from Milwaukee and is the kind of band that does not hold back. Not in its music nor in its artwork. The blood vomiting skull on its album's sleeve is somewhere between a joke and serious. The music is all seriousness though. In just 2.14 minutes Sex Scenes tells and plays all. Nothing is the band's first single from the first album 'Everything Makes Me Sick', and it comes with a bang. Sex Scenes is around since 2016 but it's singer, Sarah Turbo, joined in 2021. She sounds like Amy Taylor of Amyl and The Sniffers in an angry mood. Behind her the band rages with a distorted bass guitar and guitars that play a great hook or two during the song. Nothing is quite the introduction to the upcoming album, to be released on 8 May.

Wonder. Benét

Unwinding, the big slow down comes with Wonder by singer Benét. The song starts as a sort of 'Let Love Rule', but next reminds me more of G. Love & Special Sauce where its rhythm is concerned. Wonder slowly evolves into a dreamy song, where friends of Benét wonder about a topic that concerns them, sampled into the song. This makes Wonder a song that sets itself apart, as it is not entirely the singer's song. Musically, Wonder is a basic song. Drums, a bass guitar is enough to kick it off. Surely but slowly the song flashes out with more instruments and in the vocal arrangement. It becomes an intricate weaving of instruments and voices, that makes for interesting listening. And then other voices take over, where the melody keeps Wonder going. It all ends abruptly, with an acoustic guitar providing a short coda. Album 'Make 'm Laugh' is expected on 6 June.

Scars. After Elmer

With Scars Rotterdam band After Elmer turns the clock back for a few decades. Around the year 2000 there were bands like Creed that started to play songs like these, post grunge. But there's also some emo in Scars. After Elmer builds up the song in an excellent way. An empty beginning with strong accents from guitar and drums. Next up is the release in the chorus, where the band goes full out. It's the kind of chorus that deserves a moshpit. An audience that goes apeshit as one. No matter how forceful the chorus is, the band has taken care of a strong vocal melody. That is just one part of the song though. The dynamics work really well and the band is an ace in getting the accents in all the right moments. After Elmer may have hit its jackpot with Scars.

Low Hanging Fruit. Matt Tecu + Fernando Perdomo

An instrumental is not your every day on this blog, but we have another one with Low Hanging Fruit. I have no clue who Matt Tecu + Fernando Perdomo are. The names are totally new to me, but this single rocks in a very old-fashioned way. Low Hanging Fruit rocks to hard to be from a cheesy circa 1970 movie soundtrack but the song contains the concept of it. That organ does the trick alright. It provides this psychedelic feel to the whole. The lead guitar is somewhere between surf and rock, while the drums definitely make it a rock song. The bass on the other hand is in Serge Gainsbourg territory. It gives you an impression how diverse Low Hanging Fruit sounds. It's from an album called 'Getting Warmer' which is out already.

Before The Fall EP.  Kier Byrnes & The Kettle Burners

On Before The Fall Kier Byrnes & The Kettle Burners defy genre and time with an all-time mix of folk, Irish folk, punk and what not. Of course, rightly so you will think of The Pogues, Gogol Bordello, and even Dropkick Murphys. It's all in the opening song 'White Russians', right up to the mock Iwan Rebrow background singing. The instruments and approach are more traditional than the last two mentioned bands. That makes Kier Byrnes & The Kettle Burners a more traditional band. This shows in the songs that follow, as the punk tempo goes out of the songs. 'When The Money's All gone' even  moves into country territory. The accordeon gives the song even a French Mediterranean flavour. The lead guitar adds a Chris Isaak kind of rock and roll. 'Train's Off The Rails' moves into The Paladins style rock and roll. In the following two songs you will be surprised once again by the music on offer. Kier Byrnes & The Kettle Burners may have a hard time choosing what kind of band it wants to be, in each song the band convinces. Before The Fall is an EP that deserves attention. Party time, is another good description.

Call Out Your Name ft. Pete Townsend. Inge Lamboo

A Dutch singer working with The Who legend Pete Townsend? The answer is yes, as you can see. The result is an indie rock track with some real fiery guitar work by Townsend. What is more important, is that the track caught my attention from the very start. Call Out Your Name hovers somewhere between indie rock and a Fleetwood Mac kind of pop. Lamboo has a voice that can compete with every female singer coming out of the U.S. in indie rock/pop. Whether Alanis or Katy Perry, she's right up there. The music itself is fairly basic. She let's her voice do the talking. And then there's that lead guitar that throws "some mud against the wall in that old sixties style" as Townsend called his contribution. At 79 he has followed Inge Lamboo online and was especially caught by her mash up of Arctic Monkeys with Fleetwood Mac. The result is a nice single and a trip to London for Lamboo to see The Who and present the single to Townsend. Her second album, 'This Is How The Future Sounds' will be released on 30 May.

The Experiment EP. Replaced By Robots

Replaced By Robots only rang a bell because of books on the fourth industrial revolution, not because of a band. That changed with the release of this five song mini album which the band released recently. The trio consists of Goolkasian, Heather Joy Morgan and Adam Wade. Morgan has a background in painting, the others have played in various bands over the past two decades. For The Experiment they worked with producer Paul Q. Kolderie. It resulted in a mini album that combines upbeat alternative rock, with some glam rock and synth things. Replaced By Robots manages to combine several decades of music in a successful way. Heather Joy Morgan even does a Nico, one who is not on the verge of moving to the other side. What gets to me, is the upbeat music that The Experiment offers. It allows for both serious listening and dancing all in one. Replaced By Robots delivers it all in one go.

SS-100-X. The Speed Of Sound

What the story is, I still have to get into. Fact is, The Speed of Sound has released three albums under the name 'A Cornucopia', with partly the same track names. One of the singles from an album titled additionally 'Minerva' is SS-100-X, I suppose a soviet Union type missile that was aimed at us in the 1970 or 80s. This song is 'I'm Waiting For My Man' by the Velvet Underground during day time. Without any trouble I'm able to sing "standing on a corner ..." over the intro. The vocal melody is it's own, making it a different song. The song has a chorus as well. SS 100 eggs, I hear, influenced by Easter? The lyrics are not on scoring heroine but on the Kennedy assassination and conspiracy theories around it. SS-100-X was the code name of the car the Kennedys were in on that fateful day in 1963. The combination of the lyrics and the music make it an interesting song to listen to. In fact it's good.

He Seems To Think That He's A King. Garret Vandermolen

Do protest songs still exist? Many people argue that they do not any more. Garret Vandermolen has decided that this has to end this situation and wrote a song against the would be (soon actually?) dictator in The White House, his oligarch friends and sycophants bowing to his every whim. The title to the song tells it all. It is not the kind of king my country has or the U.K., no a king that reigns at will, like Louis XIV, who went to war in the summer, held court in the winter and kept his potential enemies as close as possible. Raised taxes for his own whims, including hobby wars, lavish luxury, etc. It's that kind of king Vandermoolen is singing about. The song is the right mix between mocking, an upbeat beat and melancholy singing. Say Tom Petty style. The sad thing is, that everything I and many others fear, may well be reality very soon. He Seems To Think That He's A King is the kind of song that may get Garret Vandermolen into serious trouble any day soon. Hopefully, the day will come that these "mighty will fall". It will take more than this song though. Let's call it a good start and make it the anthem of resistance.
