The Maureens. Living room show, Haarlem Sunday 24 March 2018

The Maureens can be found on this blog since 2015 and are a regular guest ever since. How can a band with the same name as my mother not catch my attention? The music proved a match. The Maureens is one of those bands that go out in search of perfect popsongs and come out at the other end a winner. The kind of band that ought to be all over the radio, but somehow in the musical world of 2019 is not.

Put into a private setting of a living room, the band encountered the eyes of the audience as intimately as the audience eyes the band. "We can hear you listening", singer Hendrik Jan de Wolff said at a certain point in the show. And deservedly so. In an intimate setting like a private home show there's no hiding for band nor audience. Every detail is discernable putting pressure on the band to perform and on the audience to truly listen. And listen we did. Looking at the faces of the people around me intensely so. The impact was instant and clear to see.

The Maureens were able to provide those little sparks of pure magic to all present. How snapping a finger and tinkling the little iron plates of a foot tambourine can create a rhythm, how wild guitar effects come through even when everything is turned down to one. But, above all, how melodies can affect people, not to speak of the three part harmonies that rolled over us on the other side of the room. As I wrote there is no hiding in a living room. Neither for a good song that can become even greater due to the intimacy. Several did.

Exactly how good The Maureens' songs are, you can read about elsewhere on this blog. The same goes for the performances on stages. The band has added another aspect to its palet for me. This music lends itself perfectly for an intimate setting. I wish them the main stage of Lowlands and other festivals though. In that case I can say that I saw them in my own living room. Not one guest left without the feeling having been part of an experience, being warmed by beautiful music and the emotions that come with it. Thank you again, Hendrik Jan, Martijn, Stefan and Wouter.

Beth Wimmer, met Billy Watts op gitaar: Wo.'s Huiskamerconcert, 14 oktober 2017

Het is al bijna vertrouwde muziekgrond, de Haarlemse huiskamer van Wo. en Karen. Hun tweede huiskamerconcert dit jaar, dit keer met de in Zwitserland woonachtige Californische singer/songwriter Beth Wimmer. Zij trad op met haar Amerikaanse vriend, producer en gitarist Billy Watts, die trouwens al decennia in een heel aardige eigen band speelt: Mojo Monkeys.

In het eerste deel van het concert trakteerde Beth ons op een selectie van haar nieuwe, vierde CD, Bookmark, die pas volgende week uitkomt. Beth zingt wat nu Americana schijnt te heten, een begrip dat mij op zich niet veel zegt. Maar houdt het inderdaad maar op een mix van folk, country, beetje blues, en snufje rock! Haar stem is erg goed, krachtig, zuiver, met veel emotie. De nieuwe cd klinkt mooi, en de nummers die mij in het bijzonder aanspraken waren Louisiana, en titeltrack Bookmark.

In het tweede deel van set, na een goed verzorgde pauzeborrel in het zonnetje in de achtertuin, speelden Beth en Billy een selectie uit het eerdere werk van Wimmer, met name haar cd’s Ghosts & Men (2011) en Miracle Girl (2008). Opvallend genoeg speelde ze niet het nummer dat haar tot op heden de meeste radio airtime in de VS en diverse prijzen heeft opgeleverd: Self Righteous Son of A Bitch. Dat is nogal een rocksong, dus wellicht niet geschikt voor de huiskamersetting.

Wel presenteerde ze een mooie selectie uit haar oeuvre. Tekstueel gaat het vooral over de liefde en relaties, geheel passend bij het genre natuurlijk. Dus kregen we grappige nummers zoals Mexico, waarin zelfs een Zwitsers jodeltje zit. Het door de vrouwelijke aanwezigen wel heel erg gretig omarmde Simplicity of a Man, Mahogany Hawk, een fijne ingetogen versie van Bowie’s Starman, Makin’ War (over haar Zwitserse vriend die net nadat zij bij hem was ingetrokken drie weken dienstplicht moest vervullen), en het mooie Move On. Jake Bugg with Max Meser. Patronaat, Haarlem 4 June 2017

After seeing Jake Bugg live for the first time, there remains only one thing to say: What a talent! Now I had heard all his albums, so that did not really come as a surprise. From a nice debut, to a great second album, to a latest album in which Bugg spreads his wings and tries to find new ways to express himself musically.

The show started with Jake Bugg with an acoustic guitar and an artist that spellbound his audience. The way he played with the tempo of a song and his diction showed how he lives in his songs and can play with them. Making them much more expressive and impressive. As a listener he surprised me several times during an acoustic song. A trick he played superbly again and even more impressively during the song before last.

The most surprising thing of the show was Jake Bugg's speaking voice. To my surprise it was very low. My girlfriend immediately got a case of business-deformity, as according to her Jake Bugg uses his voice completely wrong and should learn to sing with his real voice and not how he sings now. He will get voice troubles she predicts. Time will tell. The point was given, according to her, in the cover by Richie Havens (!?), 'Going Back To My Roots'. Here he sung as he should. Meanwhile I was wondering, so that disco single of circa 1980 was a cover by Richie Havens? Never too old to learn.

The many talents of this young artist all came out during the show. The songwriter, the performer, the singer and the guitarist. The three piece band played competently but hardly without a lasting impression. They are there to make Jake Bugg shine and that mission succeeds without any doubt.

The music of Jake Bugg has a few sides. There's is the early Dylan balladeer, the Johnny Cash country rocker and the rock and roller. Next to his own voice and songs, like 'A Song About Love' and 'Simple Pleasures'. All sides got their spot, before the show went into overdrive and the rock and rollers came out. Before that moment all aspects received their space and time in the limelight. In the mean time Bugg showed us all the elements in his guitar playing, licks played at astonishing speed, rhythmic soloing, fingerpicking, it's all there. All three his albums got a good portion of songs where nothing stood out, unless it was the dance rhythm of 'Gimme The Love' of his latest album 'On My One', and the quality of all songs were evident. But then, how different is 'Gimme The Love' really from a 'Slumville Sunrise'? Idea? Different. Intent? The same. Dancing, up tempo. That hardly anything stands out is a manifestation of the quality of the songs of Jake Bugg, they are all good. Even my favourites were not extremely special, just made me move a little bit more. I enjoyed each and every song he played.

There was one aspect to the Jake Bugg show that was unique. I'd never seen before. The technicians at the side doubled as cocktail mixers. Whatever it was, drinks got mixed and served on stage in between tuning the next guitar.

'We have one more song for you". 'Lighting Bolt' was played and the four men walked off the stage and that was it. Out with a bang.

When we entered the venue we could hear the support act starting to play. On entering the hall, musically I could have been fooled, that we were too late to hear the start of Jake Bugg. We weren't, as he wasn't on stage. It was Max Meser. An artist I had meant to check out, but somehow failed to listen to in the past year. There's simply so much to keep up with. Also here it was clear that we were watching a musical talent with many faces. 60s inspired songs came by infused with some late 70s spikes. Most songs I heard were easy to connect to, although I missed that little extra, that spark which makes songs come truly alive. That apart, everything was in its right place. The band around Meser gave that little extra that gave me the impression to be watching a band and not a lead singer with accompanying musicians. The songs were more than alright and deserve checking out. So why there was no merchandise baffled me. After a show is the moment to sell albums and stuff. (At the metal show next door in the café of the Patronaat, there was a whole shop with stuff set up.) So I'll turn to Spotify instead.

Two great shows in one go. It should have been on the beach in Bloemendaal, but I was fine with this change. Much closer to home. While writing I am listening once again to 'Shangri La'. What a fantastic album. One of the best of the 10s so far.

Gather live. Birds of a Feather en Jara Holdert

Op vrijdag 19 mei is de derde aflevering van Gather live. Na het mooie optreden van The Wanderer en het ontwapenende optreden van No Ninja Am I april jl. is het de beurt aan de Amsterdamse singer-songwriter Jara Holdert en het Zwitserse duo Birds of a Feather. Wat kunnen we verwachten in het oude V&D gebouw in Haarlem?

Birds of a Feather releaste recentlelijk haar nieuwe EP 'Rise Up', volgend op hun eerdere EP 'Light Up', uit 2016. Ze staan beide op Spotify. Amy McKay en Ryan Lean zingen en spelen samen in delicate arrangementen die iemand toestaan om uiterst relaxt te luisteren naar hun nummers. Enerzijds kan een liedje klinken alsof het zo uit de kerk is weggelopen, terwijl anderzijds het volgende een beschaafde pop rock song is. Voeg daarbij een song die klinkt als het een intro is voor een nummer vol EDM beats, die natuurlijk niet komen, en het beeld is wel compleet. Birds of a Feather is een gevarieerde band, die niet bang is om haar nummers geheel verschillend in te kleuren.

Dit maakt het lastig om vergelijkingen los te laten. Het voert te ver om te zeggen dat het duo een eigen geluid heeft gevonden. Daarvoor gebeuren er teveel verschillende dingen. Het hokje beschaafde pop staat zeker wijd open, maar dat vertelt het verhaal maar ten dele. In de samenzang schuilen hints richting country, in de muziek voorzichtige elementen naar veel modernere muziek. 'Home' is een gedragen song, maar de atmosfeer maakt het nummer ronduit spannend. Diverse keyboards doen hun ding op de achtergrond en creëren zo een eigen wereld onder 'Home'.

Live verwacht ik prachtige samenzang van Birds of a Feather over zacht gitaargetokkel heen. Intieme momenten in licht gevarieerde nummers die zorg dragen voor een mooie luisterervaring.

Jara is een singer-songwriter uit de residentie. Op You Tube vond ik een paar solo nummers, die mij de impressie gaven met een naar jazz neigende singer-songwriter te maken te hebben. Dat klopt ook. Zij studeert jazz zang.

Op Soundcloud trof ik nog een aantal nummers aan. Het startte met nummer dat meer indie klonk, met een bandbegeleiding. Jara Holdert's stem is nogal hoog, een beetje zoals Joni Mitchell, dus dat moet je liggen. Zodra 'Sorrow' begint te spelen, is de vergelijking geen vage referentie meer. Het had mij kunnen foppen. Als vervolgens een Astrud Gilberto achtig nummer begint, is duidelijk dat Jara net zo veelzijdig is als Birds of a Feather. Ook zij is niet voor een sound te vangen. Haar stem moet je liggen, merk ik. Maar 'To Like You' vangt mij met zijn fraaie opbouw en prettige referenties.

Met deze twee artiesten moet het aankomende "huiskamer" concert in Gather opnieuw een interessante bijeenkomst worden. Veel mooie liedjes van twee totaal verschillende artiesten.
