Anarchist Gospel. Sunny War

I Am The River, The River Is Me. Jen Cloher

My first introduction to I Am The River, The River Is Me was not by listening to it. No, it was reading Erwin Zijleman's review a few days ago. He seems to have received one of the musical scares of his lives when listening to Jen Cloher's new album.

For me 'Jen Cloher', her eponymous previous album from 2017, was an alternative (punk)rocker that was a great introduction for me to the Australian singer. Six years later she has changed totally, a complete makeover and the album went down so well with me from the very first seconds. It is not so much the songs that have changed. This could have been a full set alternative (punk)rockers. Jen Cloher decided to present them in a totally differently way. What she proves, beyond doubt, is that a good song is a good song. And she can write, sing, play and record them. I Am The River, The River Is Me is totally impressive.

Six years between two albums is a long time and she took the time out to explore other sides to her musicianship. As an outsider it is impossible nor necessary to know what led to the change in approach. The break up with Courtney Barnett leading her to less associated music? The forced rest during the pandemic? Searching for her roots? See the Maori language she uses on this album. Whatever the cause, I Am The River, The River Is Me is totally impressive. I can't stress that point enough.

Not that rock has gone completely from Jen Cloher's music. It is played far more sparingly, making it more of a surprise when it makes an entrance. A tougher guitar may enter a song or a tougher song like 'Being Human' upsets the apple cart a little with its wild approach. Haka style singing/shouting and all in the background going on as well. 'Being Human' is a cross breed between The Velvet Underground and The Stooges while being, besides human, in total control.

With the single 'Mana Takatãpui' Jen Cloher had already given a shot across the bow. It was totally different, yet I concluded late last year that the song "is impossible not to like". I easily stand by these words and extend them to the whole of I Am The River, The River Is Me. The mood she introduced me to with the single, is a part of this album. Not so much a Jack Johnson rhythm but the relaxed feel that oozes out of it. Jen Cloher's version of a Hawaiian surf and hammock dream is submerging in a river and letting it take her where it goes, cradled and carried by the slow but sure stream.

Back in 2017 I already concluded Jen Cloher is the better artist of the, then, partners. She is so much more original and I Am The River, The River Is Me is the proof of point. Music is not a competition. It is there to be enjoyed by those who like it. From the smallest of songs, 'Protest Song' to the more present songs, each one gets the treatment it needs to step forward and shine. It makes for a varied and consistently good album. Oh, yes, did I tell you I Am The River, The River Is Me is totally impressive?

The Good Ones Got Away. New Earth Farmers

The Good Ones Got Away? This sounds ominously like an album of second choices only. If this, however, are the leftovers from a great recording session, many-a-band would want to be able to come up with them. New Earth Farmers, formerly New American Farmers, has produced a fine record containing a mix of Americana, pop and rock. Colouring within the lines, true, but with the brightest colours imaginable. And then there's 'The Garden'. I'll get back to that song, promised.

New Earth Farmers is a five piece band from the West Coast with a link to The Alarm in drummer Nigel Twist and to Chuck Prophet. I must have seen lead-guitarist James DePrato and bass player Kevin T. White play besides Prophet several times in the pre-covid years. Musically the band evolves around Paul Knowles, singer, guitarist and keyboardist and his partner, guitarist and vocalist Nicole Storto. They set out the musical lines on this record.

Two songs stood out for me immediately, the very explosive, massive and near epic, 'The Garden' and the enormously poppy 'Oh, Mary'. I was inclined to write not to expect further fireworks on The Good Ones Got Away. New Earth Farmers plays decent music. That songsmithing was a better word for it. I was wrong. It is song two and three on the album that gave me that impression. There is so much more going on, like the World Party cover, 'Waiting Such A Long, Long Time'. The song truly rocks. I love it.

Anyone who has a musical ear of more than a few decades is able to pick out some of the influences that Knowles and Shorto have sucked up in their lives. It has all led to songs that are so good to listen to. Songs of warmth and compassion of love and tears. Some louder, some softer, always well crafted

The album starts with 'Oh, Mary', previously presented on this blog as a single. The pop feel ought to bring this band to the radio, as it has that little extra. The lyrics a little provocative for the very religious, with a little snipe at water and wine at the marriage in, where was it, Canaan? The kind of song that got songsmiths The Jayhawks on the radio 30 years ago. 'Oh, Mary' has that quality, that fun and level of playing. As far as I'm concerned, why not play it today?

From there on the album takes a turn towards more serious listening and this works out quite well. More subtle and moments where the little extra's come out nicely. An organ, nice lead lines, harmony singing. The sound is always warm and inviting. Perhaps the songs are a bit interchangeable but wait for that moment where James DePrato lets his guitar speak for him and the organ is turned up a little. One of the moments The Good Ones Got Away is turned upside down.

And then 'The Garden', the album's sixth song, recorded live. New Earth Farmers goes into overdrive and pump themselves up tremendously. A song of epic proportions. It should have been the final song. Now the album's candle is blown out by a short 'Interlude' and a beautiful ballad. 'Temporary Road', slowly washed away.

Reading the band's name I had expected a true country band. Luckily I tried it out anyway, resulting in a nice album having been added to my collection. Rock and roll comes in many shapes and sizes. Here's another example of that.

Our last goodbye. Elenne May, De Roode Bioscoop Sunday 12 March 2023

Photo: Wout de Natris
"The end of an era", it said somewhat ominously in the email inviting me to come to Elenne May's show in Amsterdam. This was not only the end of the theatre tour 'Velvet Beings' but also the end of Elenne May as a band. A band that I've seen live several times. It even performed twice in our living room. A band that never disappointed. A band that, for the life of me, I can't understand why it did not attract a bigger audience. Elenne May had a lot going for it.

The trip started with an email in the fall of 2015. We have a new EP out and would you care to listen to it? I did and became a fan. The EP was followed by two more that together became 'Veggie Patch In The Desert', a very varied and creative album with music that without doubt can be called original. The album made it to the number three position of my personal 2016 list, but kept growing: number 5 in my top 100 album overview of the 2010s. In the meantime I listened to the band's previous album, 'Misleadingly Soft', that turned up as number 39 in the same list.

After this it remained silent for many years. Just before the pandemic I received an invitation to come to one of two try out shows. I selected the second one and we all know why I never got to see the show. This did not happen until the summer of 2022, when the band did a try out in my living room. Up close and doing the whole performance moving around their instruments and cables without breaking anything. Dead silence, except for the band. An audience totally enraptured by the blend of spoken word, music, performance and electronics. Music and theatre mixed really well in 'Velvet Beings'. Unfortunately only five of the songs can be heard, the rest is lost to history as they have not been formally recorded.

The five songs that were recorded and released as singles, digitally, show tremendous progress and, again, creativity. The band explored its boundaries and found it could step over them with ease with no apparent new boundaries in sight, so I felt. Search and you will find reviews of all five on this blog and of the living room show.

The question I was asked beforehand, was about the difference between the two shows, at home and here. The differences as such were not so huge. One thing was very different: having a bigger venue allows for more dynamics. Drummer Eddie Jensen could really hit his snares and cymbals a few times, drawing out the rest of the band with him. Without going over safety boundaries for the ears, the band grew to great volumes and depth. The intimacy traded in for rock and roll. Not a term I'd use easily for Elenne May. The band did rock a few times alright.

All the great qualities of Elenne May came out beautifully in De Roode Bioscoop. The atmospheric sounds of guitar and keyboards by Roeland Scherff, in combination with the inventive drumming and beautiful bassplaying of Eveline Ypma create the kind of music fairytales are made of. They create the soft bed in which singer Elenne Klok can fill in the songs in such a way that magic is the word I suggest to use describing them. Elenne's voice tops it off, assisted by Eveline and Roeland.

No more. After this Sunday afternoon the band as such is no more, had run its course. All good things come to an end. Still I am a bit sad and shocked. Elenne will make more music under the name Elenne May, Roeland plays his guitar in church, Eveline is creating film scores and Eddie plays in other bands and is building his new home in the east of the country. And I? I'm left behind with the memory of great shows and with beautiful music that I can play for the rest of my life; and will.

Like Roeland said to me, we were on a trip together. From the sideline I followed Elenne May with great pleasure and am glad to say I got to know them as friends in music. With big hugs we said our goodbyes. Be well and thank you for the beautiful music!

The WAEVE. The WAEVE
