Behave Myself. She Drew The Gun

She Drew The Gun? What kind of band name is that?, I can't help but wonder reading the name on the cd. It is sort of cool and in combination with the album's title, Behave Myself, it raises some questions too. Behave yourself while drawing a gun? This is not a lady to approach without soft gloves on. The first point are in She Drew The Gun's basket. I was intrigued and started to play the album, expecting punkrock, angry explosions.

If anything, Behave Myself is a modern album. It combines alternative rock, pop singing melodies, Madchester drum rhythms, electronics and switches between more traditional songs and very modern sounding ones. The result is extremely danceable music. Standing still is hardly an option listening to this music. The moodchanges in the songs keeps the listener on his toes. More than enough goes on for both extremes to enjoy what's going on here.

She Drew The Gun is Louisa Roach's band. Started as a solo act in 2013, she built a live band around herself that releases its third album this week. It's my first album but I can only say that the introduction is quite agreeable. This band presents itself beyond a one dimensional form, as some bands do. With a song like 'Class War (How Much)' a stand is taken for the poor. It is in line with how Louisa Roach describes herself: "working class, socialist, feminist, mother of a child". The message is packed into an alternative pop song, where the Giorgio Moroder like disco rhythm of 'Panopticon' in my view would have underscored the message of class war in a better, more driving way. She Drew The Gun takes a different view. A class war to sing along to is another option and works.

The surprise of Behave Myself is that a lot of the songs are so different. Despite the fact that over half fit my introductory description, it is easy to spot the differences. The weird sounds coming from the keyboards and synths certainly assist here. Pulsing, floating, wavering, hovering it all comes by while guitar, bass and drums ground the songs in a firm way before they disappear into thin air; Alternative rhythms with singing tending towards rapping; A pure pop song receiving a She Drew The Gun treatment, you will find it all come by. And on top of it all several great, modern sounding rock songs.

With Behave Myself She Drew The Gun has come into my life. It seems like the album may stay for a while.

Tina. De Tina Turner Musical. Beatrixtheater, Utrecht, vrijdag 8 oktober 2021

Tina is 'Simply The Best', "better than all the rest".

Now And Then. Shaye Zadravec

Astral Swans. Astral Swans

With its album 'Astral Swans' Astral Swans returns to this blog. To think that I saw Matthew Swann perform solo in Amsterdam Noord only a year before we all were thrown back onto ourselves due to the pandemic. In a time it was totally normal to take the train and ferry and walk to an obscure venue to listen to music with others. How times changed in the meantime and are still not fully back to normal, if ever in the coming few years.

What has come to pass is a new Astral Swans' album and what a nice album it is. Let me fall in with the door with that comment. Was his previous album, released on Tiny Room Records, an alternative affair and somewhat darker, and good, don't misread me here, 'Astral Swans' is far more upbeat. I'm not afraid to write I'm listening to alternative pop in some of the songs.

In the first two songs Swann sings duets with Julie Doiron (Eric's Trip and Mount Eerie). The duets give a totally different feel to Astral Swans' music. A touch of light is added. Believe it or not, on the moment of writing a ray of sunlight falls through my window, accentuating my observation during the opening song 'Spiral'. Both 'Spiral' and 'Flood' have an ethereal quality. Especially in the way the vocals of 'Flood' are recorded give an impression as if they hover over the music.

When an alternative disco rhythm opens 'Blackhole Town', it's almost as if Astral Swans has released a party album. This song is danceable, folks, so do when you see the band play live. As a solo live experience it may be skipped though. The song works. A more simple conclusion can not be shared with you.

As a whole the atmosphere of 'Astral Swans' reminds me of what Lou Doillon is capable of reaching for. The French singer of part U.K. decent has that same balance between pop and seriousness this album contains. The seriousness is there, just as the alternative edge is in place. 'Sympathy For The Stupid' descends into anarchy in the solo before returning to the tune it also is. With the anarchy 'Astral Swans' shows the extreme side of the unpredictability the album contains as well. There's no telling what the next song will do, except that it will make you feel more upbeat. Not every song is upbeat as such, they even ask existential questions: "I'm free, but I don't know if I'm happy", sung over a fairly upbeat tempo, may sound confusing to the unsuspecting listener. Someone capable of writing a song like 'Bird Songs' is doing something right in his life though.

Moving through the album you will find it is littered with the elements mentioned so far, including Julie Doiron's voice in the nice cover of Cat Power's 'Cross Bones Style'. (Cat Power has just announced a cover album, btw.) It all makes me conclude that with its self-titled album Astral Swans has released a gem of an album that certainly is a contender for the best of 2021 list I'm slowly having to think about compiling. When the last song, 'I Was Awake For Awhile,' is as interesting as the start of the album, including a return to a little anarchy, I rest my case.

Drone Etiquette. The Persian Leaps

Just over a year ago The Persian Leaps were present on this blog with its mini album 'Smiling Lessons'. Perhaps the review assisted a little in these lessons as the band obviously welcomed the review warmly on its Facebook page. Looking at the picture below though, I'm not so sure... Come 2021 and with Drone Etiquette, The Persian Leaps return to WoNoBlog.

In a way I could copy/paste the review, as most of what it states, works for Drone Etiquette. At the same time it would sell the album tremendously short. What attracts me to this new album and even more so than to the previous one, is the positive energy the songs share with the world. The poppy rock songs, seven of them, including a single mix, take the best of Teenage Fanclub's mid 1990s albums and add a touch of sunshine to them, just like is coming through my window right now, after the dark clouds and off and on downpours that have been going on for over 24 hours. The silver linings make the music of the St.Paul/Minneapolis based bands such a joy to listen to.

Some things have changed in the past year. Drew Forsberg is back to how he started The Persian Leaps over a decade ago: he is The Persian Leaps. (The band name came to Forsberg while daydreaming during a class on Greek archaeology.) Bass player John Hunt is gone a well. This is credited to the lockdown conditions more than anything else, so perhaps Hunt will return on a next recording. This does not make a difference in the songwriting. This was all Forsberg anyway.

As a Dutchman I have always been more U.K. oriented than U.S. The difference comes forward in how I perceive the album and how the bio describes it. The bio mentions 90s college rock as the main influence, where I hear all these U.K. bands from the 90s to mid 00s as main influences. Everything from Teenage Fanclub to The Rifles come by here. Glorious pop-rock songs that invite listening to seriously, allow dancing and singing along to and are great to listen to at a louder volume while cooking. Top of the pop combinations in music, is my two cents.

Living in a lockdown, but of course even more so the reasons that caused the need for successive lockdowns, was extremely negative. Not to speak of the negative consequences Covid-19 has had on (semi-)professional musicians. Over here it sometimes looked as if our government sees the music business as a nice hobby and not as the industry so many are dependent of their livelihoods. I've heard some quite bitter comments from musicians on this. It all has a bright side for the music fans though. It led to music that perhaps would never have existed, as musicians were thrown back to an isolated live as well. And what do musicians do? Create new music. It may well be that Drone Etiquette is a result from the lockdown as well. A welcome present it is.
