Woman. Wallis Bird

Listening to Woman for the first few times I had the impression to be listening to a new, young artist. Extremely talented and good at everything she puts her mind to. So every song sounds different, addresses another musical style and a way of singing that goes well with the genre.

Listen and you will find modern R&B, 50s crooning, indie, singer-songwriter and 70s folky balladry, but all over a more modern sound belonging somewhat in the here and now.

Wallis Bird however is a 37 year old Irish singer living in London for most of her solo record releasing career. This sheds a different light on what I am hearing, where age and experience are concerned. It takes nothing away from Ms. Bird's quality voice nor her talent. You can find several beautiful songs on her latest record, Woman. No, they are not all for me. When she moves more into R&B, like in Love Respect Peace, I hear a smooth song that is not for me. Until that great twist, not unlike Sophie Hunger is able to pull off. Because of the twist in the drum accents and the singing it becomes an interesting song to listen to. It is in moments like this Wallis Bird brings me into her world even more.

As a whole I notice that Woman is an ideal album to play in the background during dinner or drinks. It is inoffensive, neutral in sound and demeanour. Don't take this as a disqualification. It means that it is an album that I still hear in those circumstances, where others disappear unnoticed. Not Woman. The album has stellar moments that shine always, everywhere. So it is when I listen to it on purpose. The same elements stand out.

The other side is that Woman is a bit too much of too much. It is so diverse that I have a hard time attaching to the album as a whole, with on top of that the musical styles that are not truly mine. Having said that from my personal point of view, it is an album that you should try for yourself. As I wrote, Wallis Bird has the voice and an obviously talent for songwriting. So go ahead, your on your own now.

Wo.

Happier Now. Native Harrow

Philophobia. Amber Run

Philophobia, I had the impression that it was something made up but definitely with a Greek undertone. The latter proved true, it means the fear of falling in love. In specific circumstances it sure is understandable. In general I would not recommend it. The tough thing is staying in love and that certainly takes two to manage.

The three gentlemen that make up Amber Run have made the topic the theme of their third record. That makes it a concept album, I'd say, although the word is avoided in the bio. Too 70s? Who cares, it is about the music in the end, because no matter how interesting the lyrics, if the music isn't good, give me a good book any old day. So Philophobia it is.

Amber Run is a trio from Nottingham in the U.K., lead vocalist Joe Keogh, bassist Tom Sperring and keyboardist Henry Wyeth. They met in school, started a band and here we are, three albums down the road.

It is Wyeth who opens the album with a piano. It goes in and out of sync with the rhythm he created at the start. 'Leader Countdown' starts off with an irregular countdown, making it totally unclear what to expect from Amber Run. It has absolutely nothing to do with what comes next. The abrupt ending and start of the commercial britpoppy rocker 'Neon Circus' makes for a change indeed. I am back immediately with Suede mach2. When Brett Anderson and his bandmates created the ever so suave rock that became their signature sound. Amber Run knows its way around this sort of music as well. The piano disappears to the background and the guitar moves to the front.

Promo photo: Daniel Alexander Harris
Another name that comes forward is Keane. Coincidentally Tom Chapman and friends recently returned after a hiatus of several years but I haven't bothered listening yet. The first bunch of hits are enough to last me a life time.

So how is this with Amber Run? I find myself somewhat ambivalent towards this album. On the one hand the songs are obviously alright. There's no trouble to name a few dozen influences that found their way into Philophobia, but the band did alright with them. I can as such not find a lot at fault with most songs. Perhaps a few keep hanging in the mid-range ballad sphere too much, but that's not a bad thing in itself. Enter Saybia or Half Moon Run, enter 'I Dare You'. It is the other hand that bothers me just more. Amber Run is following the likes of Imagine Dragons and Bastille just a touch too much in the rocking songs. Logical, as they are huge bands, but a bit of a shame because Amber Run's songs, at heart, seem better to me. There's even an Avicii touch when 'Carousel' burst into full bloom and Duncan Lawrence in 'Affection'. It makes the flow of the album hard to follow for me.

When all is added and subtracted I still can't make up my mind really. This will come to mean that I will most likely not return to the album in the future. Philophobia after all? On the good side, I certainly had a few good moments with Philophobia. Things could be worse.

Wo.

Crooked. Kristin Hersh

It is only about a year ago that Kristin Hersh re-entered my life with her inspired album 'Possible Dust Clouds'. In 2019 she releases a new album and at first listening I was immediately impressed. With fairly limited songs she and her musicians create a world full of tension and release.

Reading my review of the aforementioned album, I could sort of repeat it. At heart these are like minded albums. Inspirationally they seem to come from the same place. Having written these words, there is a strong necessity to add to them. Why?

On Crooked Kristin Hersh seems to take everything one step further. She rocks harder or is fully vulnerable in the songs. How is it that in the final song, 'Rubidoux' that is no more than a small riff being repeated over and over, yet she keeps my attention the whole time? Ending the album abruptly. Ending it like the sunset on the cover.

The album opens as if something goes wrong while playing the guitar. Like someone making a mistake in his slide towards a note. Ever so small, but discernable. The song continues, bare, elementary. Kristin Hersh starts singing with her voice that is clearly damaged, has aged. She never had an angelic voice, to be sure. It just worn out a bit more and fits the ragged music on Crooked perfectly. 'Moan' is slowly but surely flashed out. There's even a guitar with a flangy effect dubbed in. This is the most frolicking element of 'Moan'. Yet by the 30 seconds the song gets more impressive. The kind of song I do not want to stop (and luckily does at the right moment). It is the same few chords repeated over and over and they are more than enough here.

Promo photo
On Crooked Kristin Hersh manages successfully to rock, loud even, and to present alternative ballads where her voice and electric guitar have the centre stage. Nothing is smoothed over, made nicer. This is raw reality. Kristin Hersh confronting her demons as well as better features in her life. The layer of roughness and toughness is mixed with vulnerability in 'Fortune'. Everything comes together in this song it seems. It may well be the musical equivalent of her life. "You cost a fortune ... you cast a shadow today". She sings it with so much meaning and emotions, it must be one of the central lines on Crooked.

Not so long ago I wrote that 2019 so far was not exactly an impressive musical year. Just these past weeks I found that there's a strong need to revise that impression and Crooked is right in the middle of this all. What a great and strong album.

How Could A Man. Derek Senn

Derek Senn imponeert op How Could A Man met fraaie rootssongs, maar verrast evenzeer met volstrekt tijdloze rockssongs.

How Could A Man is een prachtig klinkend album en het is bovendien een volstrekt tijdloos klinkend album.

Why Me? Why Not. Liam Gallagher

'Rock And Roll Star' was a game changer. If this song had been the only Oasis song ever, it would have been enough. I could have lived with it. 'Shockwave' is not such a game changer. It can't be from this singer. The intention is clearly meant to have the same effect.

The shocking thing is that 'Shockwave' is so close to plagiarism that I can't help but wonder that nobody noticed. Whole parts of the verses is the chorus of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club's 'Spread Your Love'. In short an extremely strong song that kicks off Why Me? Why Not. like a storm. The rest is for lawyers should it come to that.

Liam Gallagher's solo career is doing nicely it seems. After the fairly nice 'As You Were', the youngest Gallagher brother returns with an even stronger album where he emulates with his old band here and there; he is the voice so why not?, but also puts his own accents in the right places. Working with different producers/co-writers did Liam a wealth of good. I am inclined to write that Why Me? Why Not. is better than Noel's latest solo effort. Especially because Liam finds the nuance in several songs and excels in mid-tempo violin laden ballad rockers and true rockers. In fact he has found his old voice again, full of arrogance and brawniness.

Of course I am still in the stage of getting myself truly acquainted with the album, the fact that the LP is already in the home tells something of my first impressions. (In fact I was the first to buy it last Friday at my local retailer, so went home with the only bag, ha!) One of the things I noticed immediately is that slacker lazy Liam, who always says in interviews he'll quite music if a record is not successful, is working here with an urgency I haven't heard in any of Beady Eye's nor his solo record. Not speak of at least some of the last set of Oasis albums. He even seems to be having real fun with these songs. Just listen to the rock and roll banging piano in 'Halo'. This is a stellar song. In fact a song that would have fitted perfectly on either of Oasis' first albums. It is a long time ago that I dared comparing a release by the band and solo efforts to 'Definitely Maybe' or 'What's The Story (Morning Glory)'. Things never became that good again. And then here's Why Me? Why Not.

No, let's not overdo it, let's not. Certainly not. But I can't help myself, I just really like Liam's LP. There's so much happening. Of course, he ought to write a check to his brother, not to mention BRMC, John Lennon's and George Harrison's ('Meadow') ghosts are hovering over parts of the album, but who cares. The result is an album that matters. Greg Kurstin, Simon Aldred, Adam Noble and especially Andrew Wyatt have given Liam Gallagher that little extra. He even co-wrote two songs with Jeff Buckley's guitarist, Michael Tighe. It is that extra that puts him on top. Apparently 'As You Were' outsold the rest of the top 10 when it entered the English charts as number one two years ago. This album should outsell the whole list as it is so much better.

As I wrote, the real verdict will come later. The first impression is abundantly clear. Let's Rock some more, to quote the title of that other fine album released this year.

Maps And Territory. Juju

Interesting artwork. The kind that in a museum I would stop to look at and try to discern the deeper meaning of. Not that it has anything to do with maps nor territories at first sight.

During the spring I was alerted to Juju's mini album, but somehow it remained on my list of albums to check out. Mainly because the release date lay behind my working date, with a host of albums being released. So it was left behind. I decided to return to the album as remembered liking what I had heard in the first place.

Juju is Gioele Valenti, an Italian musician who works on the brink of modern folk, rock, African music and psychedelia. Everything that sort of washes up on Italy's long shore line. These rather wide and apart influences in Juju's music come together in a way that surprises as well as hypnotises. A groove can go on for quite a while the lead instruments may go off on a detour, sometimes even startling me out of my meditative state. Take 'If You Will Fall', the fourth song on the six song album. Over seven minutes long. A groove is kept up for a long time, not unlike the one in the second part of Soup's 'Sleeper' from the 'Remedies album (13 minutes long). It is the changes of course that make it so interesting and good listening. Given the fact that another song starts with an African melody and chant before taking a sharp turn (or two) later on in the song makes Maps And Territory intriguing and fun. Within the songs and as a whole. It is not a given for an artist to achieve this combination when experimenting with the listener's mood.

This combination works even better in 'Motherfucker Core'. The music is rock based. The singing psychedelic, the groove trans inducing. Again the song is long, 7 1/2 minute. The variations take care of capturing and keeping my attention. Juju is working towards a climax and dares to drop away before exploding, only to start building again.

Photo: Vicenzo Lo Piccolo
In a way it is a shame that Giole Valenti isn't a better singer (or hires one). Now the voice is hidden behind electronic effects. I can only wonder whether a "real" singer would have made the album better. My guess is yes, while at the same time this combination works for Maps And Territory and not only as a psychedelic effect. The benefit would lie in a better overall sound. There's no way of knowing of course.

'God Is A Rover' presents the hectic that is always present in Clinic's best songs. The driving, pounded piano and the high sounding cymbal are giveaways here. A lead guitar plays a strong role in the song.

'Arcontes Takes Control', the final song, starts out with saxophones and is pure jazz at the start. Remembering all the jazz rock albums my friends played in the second half of the 70s, I have heard enough for the rest of my life. So this spacey, jazzy outing is not for me. Juju plays what it will and five out of six is a good score for an experimental album.

Making Sense Of ∞. Stef Kamil Carlens

Is Zita Swoon no more? Stef Kamil Carlens is on his own and releases his second solo record. 25 Years after the debut album of dEUS and 24 after Moondog Jr's, the world is a difference place and so is the music of Carlens, just like his singing is. The other side is that my ears and mind are different as well, having been educated by the likes of 'The Ideal Crash' and 'A Band In A Box' to mention two examples from the past 20 years.

The result is Making Sense Of ∞ or infinity it is written. A lopsided 8 can be walked infinitely for sure, so okay. Despite my ears being trained, I would say this album is more down to earth and smoother than ever before. Stef Kamil Carlens' voice remains fairly strange but has aged in a pleasant way. When used like on this album it becomes a near normal voice as well. All this normalcy could have led to an album without any interesting bits or the under the skin sort of tensions. Well, believe me, it hasn't.

Carlens knows how to write a good song and how to deliver it in a way that makes it exciting to listen to. 'The Government Is No Game' is a song where the tension simply seeps from my speakers. Not much seems to happen at first, yet slowly but surely the song gets more funky and more direct in the way it addresses the listener. Carlens' voice creeps up on the listener and delivers his messages and conspiracies on governments and the likes. The tension building all the time to be released by the abrupt ending to a song that seems not to end.
Photo: Charlie de Keersmaecker

What sets Making Sense Of ∞ apart from Zita Swoon albums is the more down to earth approach to the songs. I call drummer Aarich Jespers a mathematician. Looking at him I see a mathematical precision in his approach to making his music, determining the sound and rhythm of Zita Swoon in a very specific way. Not that it is completely absent on this album, but the mood is in one way too relaxed to be so extremely precise.

Delving into the album shows that what at superficial listening appears to be relaxed easy going listening, changes when listening more intensely. Go past the joyful harmonies on the album and you will notice a kind of tension in the music. Just like life itself. We live our every day lives while major developments go on in the background, slowly but surely, near impossible to grasp the consequences of as we cannot see them clearly in the here and now. So we all just live on. This is the best way to describe the music on Making Sense of ∞.

With that Stef Kamil Carlens presents a beautiful new album with trainloads of discoveries to make, including new developments and influences in his music. If one other name needs mentioning, it is David Bowie. His ghost wanders around the album in some places. All in all this album is a tell-tale sign of a great artist who has not let himself be caught in the trick he was good at, at first. So enjoy this beautiful new album.

Horizon. Trash Kit

Borka Balogh. Borka Balogh

An album by an artist/band I had never heard from before. Borka Balogh is a singer with Hungarian roots living in Amsterdam. On the self-titled album she explores a dreamy side of the pop and soft rock segment. Music and singing bring one band to mind immediately. Not from Amsterdam but The Hague, Earth & Fire and its singer Jerney Kaagman. It's here the similarities also stop as Borka Balogh does not hold any symphonic rock antics.

The music serves the singer at all times on this album. My impression is that the vocal melodies are always leading. It is the music that follows. Together they create a sort of musical dream world. What sticks out though, this is not a rosy dream world driven by an urge for escapism. For that this world is too dark. Unpleasantness and uncomfortability is a part of this dream world. Confrontation is a part of the whole as well. Here I hear similarities with the music Elene May has made on its latest album, 'Veggie Patch In The Desert'. Borka Balogh and Elenne Klok share the same way of vocal delivery as well (not to speak of the covers of "Veggie Patch" and Borka Balogh's first album 'Traces Of You').

All together 'Borka Balogh' has led to almost irresistible listening in the past weeks. I'm not writing that I'm listening to brilliance, what I am writing is this album is simply beautiful. Without a need to force her music in any way, it stands it ground. The only exotic element is the Hungarian (at least I assume it is) singing/chanting in the opening song, 'Gone'. Also one of the songs with a full band sound. Very often the music catches me simply by an acoustic guitar and atmospherics around the voice. When the band joins, the guitar riff in 'Gone' is attractive immediately, it adds to the quality of the song and album.

The strong point of 'Borka Balogh' is that the songs do not need the force of drums and a firm bass to stand their ground. A few notes on an organ carry the intro of 'Nostalgia'. They may sound familiar, but do the job. The song could have found a place on Para Lia's debut album 'Soup Bubble Dreams', the outcome would have been so much different. The difference between what more can I add to impress versus what more does this song need to be complete? Both excel in their own way.

'Borka Balogh' is an album that has found a fine balance between atmosphere and force. Where the force mostly is something one can imagine being added, while the songs are more than good as they are. An album for the young and the old dream rockers.

A Space For Lost Time. Anna Ternheim

The short version of this review is: girl with nice voice releases nice album. It does completely right to the album on offer. In fact the review hardly needs to be much longer. Why? Find out by reading on.

Anna Ternheim is from Norway and releases her seventh album. (Seven, for me the first though.) She makes it known in the bio that her goal was to produce a sparse album. That is up to debate as far as I'm concerned, but this could be a sparse album by Ms. Ternheim's standards of course. I have no way of telling and no time to find out.

She wrote the album together with Bjorn Yttling, adding the lyrics at a later stage. What I notice is that the album has a First Aid Kit flavour in the more up tempo songs. These songs are not so much sparse as devoid of frivolities. The softer songs or sweet sour ballads all have a keyboard/synth undertone, softly filling up the mix. Anna Ternheim's voice is able to float over it as it were, like the mist over a field in the early morning just before sunrise. Just like she seems to stand on water for that matter.

It is the mix between the two sort of songs that makes A Space For Lost Time an attractive album. It is far from spectacular. As that was exactly not the intention, the mission of Anna Ternheim has fully succeeded. The sparseness leaves out many details that a producer would have added normally, showing his arranging ideas/skills, draws the attention to the quality of the songs and the voice of the singer. Both are more than okay. In fact, I like listening to this album. And that is what it comes down to, doesn't it? And why I do not need to write more.

Wo.

Magnapop live. Den Haag, Het Paard, Wednesday 11 September 2019

Foto: HareD

In 2019 verscheen zelfs een nieuwe cd The Circle is Round.

A Life Like Ours. Shane Alexander

'Allo, to you too, dear reader. The French's pronunciation of the English word 'Hallo' stairs me in the eye from Shane Alexander's new album, following up on the superb 'Bliss'.

Those following this blog and before the magazine know that Shane Alexander has been a part of WoNo Magazine from his very first album. 'The Middle Way' had a cover that confused me, as it suggested a raw sort of alt-americana to me, instead the soft-toned singer-songwriter songs that I come learn to like and love.

So when a new album reaches me, my ears are already in a very positively inclined mood to hear more. A Life Like Ours is the album I wanted to hear. So no, there are no surprises. In this case that is a positive conclusion. For two reasons. Shane Alexander is still growing as a songwriter and having his own studio gives him time to perfect his songs. There are several beautiful arrangements accompanying the new songs. So delicate, yet so strong. You will find that he does not lose himself in endless study work. Goethe's motive on limitations has not been lost on him. Alexander just as easily presents a song with just an acoustic guitar, as one with a full arrangement. At the same time the lyrics show that life has not passed him by. As we grow older, sad goodbyes become part of our lives as do joyful additions and insights. These are all reflected in his lyrics in direct and more subtle ways.

Listening to A Life Like Ours means surrender. I notice I set myself aside to submerge in the musical world Shane Alexander presents me. Take 'I'll Be Here'. A song that has a finger-picked guitar, the emptiness of the studio surrounding the sound, a voice and a piano that pops up and disappears, making me wait for the moment the next note is played. Underscoring the "I'll be here for you, when the world's to heavy" part of lyrics.

The surprise on the new album is a cover of 'Nights In White Satin'. One of the most beautiful songs from my early youth. A song that is slowly fading away from the collective memory. Less played, less heard, slowly descending in that yearly end of year fest called Top 2000. Shane Alexander plays a respectful cover, his voice just right, but adding a great, subtle guitar solo and parts to the original, fully justifying his choice to make a cover of this beautiful ballad.

An extremely familiar song tends to drive away attention from the other songs. The good news is that the quality of the other songs on A Life Like Ours stand their ground easily. Just listen to 'Fault Line' following The Moody Blues' most famous hit. Delicate, loving, caring and true. Perhaps more so than singing "I love you" a dozen times.

Whether it is basically Shane Alexander solo with his guitar or accompanied by the stellar musicians he has gathered around him in his Buddhaland studio, his songs shine. Each single one is like a bright shining star in the heavens. Songs to enjoy and marvel about. Songs that take me away for the length of an album. Mission succeeded, as Shane said: "I hope that my fans will listen to 'A Life Like Ours' top to bottom to get my full intent". It is a treat to do so, but then I grew up with albums as an artform, after having learned about singles even earlier.

A Life Like Ours is a beautiful album and having listened to it multiple times by now, again I'm inclined to thing that it holds all the cards to become my favourite Shane Alexander album, again. Seven albums into the ride and still climbing effortlessly, it seems. Keep surprising me, Shane.

Colors Bleed. Crooked Ghost

In my review of Crooked Ghost's album 'Skeleton House' I already mused that I was surprised that this was an American band. On it's new EP released this week that wonder has not changed. Except for the spelling of the word colo(u)r there is not much American about Colors Bleed.

The EP opens with a down and out ode to Morrissey. The discontented trills in the voice of singer Ray Lark emulate His Mozzness quite accurately. The song is murkier, darker than The Smiths or Morrissey solo ever came up with. The influence is there out in the open though.

Colors Bleed allows Crooked Ghost to experiment a bit more than on the LP. That sets this release apart from the main body of work, which as such is a good thing. 'Sinew In Red' and 'Golden Blue' are études in soundscapes and shredding that may one day be turned into a full-blazing song. Both have lyrics and especially the latter returns to the song format. Yet, it remains rough and unpolished, giving the impression that it is not fully finished. I do see a great anthem to end a set with, before the encores. 'Golden Blue' allows everyone in the band to go full out at eardrums splitting levels. Lasting over seven minutes it does give full opportunity indeed.

Promo photo: Rome Widenhouse
The final song, 'Bright White Noise', brings the band back into the song format for real. Adorned by a female vocal, the song speaks in volumes to the emotions of the listener. The guitars shred away underneath the lead guitar motive that goes round and round underneath the song. There are no more than two chords, but they are enough to sing about "My life's big love affair". It does not seem to have ended well, listening to the musical tears flying around.

Colors Bleed is an interesting new piece of work by Crooked Ghost. Following up on the welcomely received 'Skeleton House' this band remains one to keep an eye and ear out for.

Bird Songs Of A Killjoy. Bedouine

Live At Woodstock. Creedence Clearwater Revival

Gypsy. Eilen Jewell

It is husband Jason Beek who opens Gypsy. The rhythm he lays down is Creedence Clearwater Revival one. Pure swamprock, with a tip of the hat to the recently deceased Tony Joe White in there as well.

After the well received bluescover album 'Down Hearted Blues' Eilen Jewell returns with an album full of originals. Opener 'Crawl' could have been on the previous album, just so to not confuse newly fans (like me). The reverb guitar solo's sound instantly familiar, the violin solo a nice addition to the sound.

In the second song, 'Miles To Go', Eilen Jewell takes a country turn into the territory where she has worked for most of her career, the edge of singer-songwriter - country - blues. For me this is dangerous territory. The inhibitions of my youth have never truly left me. When country used to be Pussycat, Tammy Wynette and men from the U.S. with hats and a drawl. For parts of Gypsy Eilen Jewell leads her listeners into music from that era. In others she leads her band into more solid territory. So parts of Gypsy are touch and go for me. My mood sometimes tolerates a song like 'You Cared Enough To Lie'. Where 'C'est La Vie', Emmylou Harris' Chuck Berry cover, does work for me, this song doesn't on an average day.

'79 Cents (The Meow Song)' doesn't leave much to comment on. A very witty response to a privately made comment by an at the time certain well-known celebrity cum businessman, now called to the highest station in the U.S. Funny, committed and nothing left to guess.

Promo photo: Joanna Chattman
The choice of music is diverse. From swamprockers to country ballads and an empty atmospheric song like the title song takes flexibility of the listener. I am happy because of it, because it allows me to listen to Gypsy as a whole. No, I am not happy with the country flavoured songs, but I know that things I do like are coming and I can always skip what is in between on the wrong days. So give me 'Working Hard For Your Love' any day and moment before 'These Blues'.

What remains is that I like Eilen Jewell's voice. Something that helps me with Karen Jonas e.g. as well. Where I like Jonas' voice even better, the result is identical. They help me get through the true country songs to enjoy the album.

Summing up, Gypsy is an album made with love for these songs. It's just that not all them are meant for me. I can live with that thanks to the others that certainly are.

Rise Above It All. Jane Willow

Artwork: Dave Keegan
After her breathtaking show in Haarlem, where she played her to be released single, release day is here and it is time to point you to this nice piece of music.

Rise Above It All is a song that shows another side of Jane Willow. The song is a little more direct, soulful and swinging than her other songs released to date. The organ provides a level of warmth that endears immediately.

I am not a Joni Mitchell connoisseur but if anything there are faint traces of her music in here. This single is a serious song. It also could be seen as a motto. "I want to rise above it all", something every artist should aspire to in order to have a chance at being heard before others. Jane Willow is on that brink of being heard more.

Rise Above It All is a song that deserves to be heard. It has that modesty that surrounds the singer, while at the same time it is a statement. The musicians accompanying her give the song a boost. The drums are prominent, the organ, as said, warm, the bass subtle yet present. It is the guitars that purely serve the rhythm. Together they produce a solid bed. Not loud, no, subtle but straightforward with little variations that make me prick up my ears. Over it all Jane Willow sings with her warm voice, ever more confident. She should be as this song is another pearl. It won't be long before she can fill a necklace.

Hey Are You OK. Marike Jager

Marike Jager is an artist that faintly rings a bell, but is also associated by me with a 'should I listen to this'? message in my mind. So when I received the music to her new album, it was not on the top of my to do list, not even in the middle. So when my iPod accidentally switched in shuffle mode, I always let myself be surprised for a short while on those occasions, a song came by that I did not know but instantly liked. Time to look at what it was, 'Another River' by Marike Jager. The record was played as a whole next and here we are.

'Another River' is an alternative rock-pop song with an urgent drive, yet one that sets itself apart by the way the music defines the song or rather the emptiness of the whole. The basis is a fast, dry way of guitar playing providing the urgency. Other instruments move in and out of the song. Marike Jager sings over the whole in a fairly relaxed way. Denying the urgency to touch her delivery of the lyrics.

In the music the album holds a mix of alternative music and even a little weirdness, in a most positive way. Experimenting led to psychedelic sequences that led to an open mind and ears on my end. The result is songs going off into unexpected directions, to become so much more interesting. The ending of the title song and the middle sequence in Marakaka attest to imagination and inspiration.

Promo photo: Martijn VD Griendt
On top of all that Hey Are You OK shows the fun Marike Jager seems to have had making her new album. The album holds a lust for life and all that comes with and from that. She's not afraid to kick in a modern dance beat ('Under The Trees') to change the course of the song and the album. What at the start is a singer-songwriter song with a faint hint of an exotic rhythm and a femme fatale sort of singing, is put upside down by the beat. In front of it all remains the indie guitar sound that is at the basis of the whole album. In 'The Seeker' the same happens but then as a full out indie rocker (and then some).

It is surprises like this that make Hey Are You OK a fun album to listen to. Some songs are more appreciated by me than others but overall the album scores very well. It is adventurous. The top song 'San Diego' is The Kinks flavoured yet fits totally into the whole of Hey Are You OK. The contrast by the beautiful vocal melody and the staccato playing behind the voice again provides this contrast defining most songs on the album. Intriguing and convincing Marike Jager's new album is.

Wo.

Purple Mountains. Purple Mountains

RIP David Berman.
