The top 30 albums of 2023: Part 1, #1

1. Hackney Diamonds. The Rolling Stones

Yes, Hackney Diamonds of The Rolling Stones is my #1 album of 2023. As unexpected as it is welcome. The album proved to be everything I wasn't even hoping for anymore, because I genuinely thought they no longer had it in them. That was the initial surprise.

For some time I was contemplating to write a second review of the album, as I found over the weeks since its release I have not done justice to the album in my first review. It is even better than I thought it to be in October - early November when I returned from Japan with a Japanese copy in my suitcase.

I know this has been said many times before, but one of the most amazing things of the pop year 2023 is that it brought new songs from The Rolling Stones and one from The Beatles. Both bands delivered a new classic to their repertoire, that is already undeniable. Even in their 80s the bands are still relevant and will remain forever so, I suppose. Long past their mortal lives, their musical lives will remain with future generations. Now and then, we miss you.

Back to Hackney Diamonds. This review is a track by track review, in which I will try to explain why the track is so good or surprising, leading me to the conclusion that Hackney Diamonds is up there with the best Stones records, for me 'Beggar's Banquet', 'Let It Bleed', 'Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out', 'Exile On Main Street', Black And Blue' and 'Tattoo You', followed closely by 'Sticky Fingers', 'Goat's Head Soup' and 'Some Girls'. The newest in that list is from 1981 and we are now in 2023. Hence the unexpected and the welcome.

Angry

The lead single received a spot in the singles section of this blog in the early fall. I liked it immediately but still felt it to be a bit of a 'Start Me Up' rip off. The starting riff certainly can lead a person that way. Over the weeks and playing the song more and more, I changed my mind. The Stones do not have an extra 60 years in them, unfortunately, otherwise, 'Start Me Up' could be shelved, as the band has the ideal new show opener forever. Angry has at least as much power as its title suggests. The energy is all over the song. The surprise lies in the melodic prowess the song also has. This is not just this huge riff that powers the song, it is the power of the chorus as well. What it also on display, is the great form of the guitarists. The Stonesism, cool little guitar parts that bounce off one another, are all over the place. Don't forget the little drums-bass parts as well, to show how good the band uses dynamics. And then that huger than huge riff ending it all. The days of big hits are long over for the band, but in an alternative universe this is one of the biggest.

Get Close

New drummer Steve Jordan gets the opening shots on Get Close, stressing the big drums that are behind the band now. The chugging rhythm is the divining sound of the song. Again, the guitars draw a lot of attention to themselves. They sound so tremendously alive and varied. The Stones riff itself is clear cut, but there's a lot happening around that riff. Jagger draws a lot of attention on himself, showing that he is tremendously fit for his age. Compare him to Dylan or the latter day Leonard Cohen and even Paul McCartney's voice in the 2020s and there simply isn't a comparison. He rises high above them all, as if age is just a number. I know, it will all end somewhere within a few years, but in the meantime Jagger's singing, here and on the whole album, is like defying gravity. Get Close is not the best song on Hackney Diamonds but is an important part of that energy boost the album is.

Depending On You

The last of the three songs where producer Andrew Watt receives writing credits, something totally outrageous in the Stones realm in all these decades. Depending On You is the first ballad on the album, with a country flavour. The warm sounds of the Hammond makes the song glow, the strings do the rest. In the meantime there's a lot going on. The song starts at a low level, with an acoustic guitar, the Hammond and an electric lick here and there. Slowly but surely the sound grows bigger and bigger. By the time of the second verse, there's a full band, but nothing extra yet. A slide guitar enters, the Hammond grows its sound to a warmer, more prominent glow. Ronnie Wood shows his proficiency on the slide and pedal steel guitars. The backing vocals come in and there come in the strings and a grand piano. The song is sent off with a grand finale, making it a great Stones ballad.

Bite My Head Off

Enough of the sweet stuff. Here's the dirty rocker in the 'Respectable' and 'Star Star' category. However, the chorus is one of stellar quality. Making Bite My Head Off one of the best sleazy rockers the Stones ever wrote. It all starts with the enormous energy the song provides. The deep, dark, ugly riffing starts the song. Underneath it all is an even more dirty bass. And the player, is an ex-Beatle, who probably played the dirtiest bass part in his career. The sound is totally distorted, making it a very prominent part of the song and putting all the attention to the bass part. A Beatle starring in a Stones song?! Who would ever have predicted that? Fact is that Paul McCartney shines in the song and makes the song shine no little in the process. Bite My Head Off is rock and roll as the Stones have meant it to be. It is one of the songs that make Hackney Diamonds such a special album. And then, again that chorus. Man, I simply love it. It combines dirty rock with a fantastic melody and that makes Bite My Head Off one of the best Rolling Stones rockers ever.

Whole Wide World

Whole Wide World is the kind of song that the Stones albums of the past decades are filled with. From 'Mixed Emotions' to whatever on 'A Bigger Bang'. And once again that chorus starts and I was baffled. Why is this chorus so good?, making the second verse so much better instantly as well? Did Watt press Jagger and Richards harder to come up with a better melody? "Guys, this song can do better!?" Whatever the answer is, fact is that this song is better than most released since 'Tattoo You'. The same goes for the guitar work. Just listen to the two solos. They are really, really, good. Full of life, urgency, with Steve Jordan really pushing the band forward. There are so many little guitar melodies around the main riff, deep, high, in the middle, a sheer multitude of guitar overdubs. Somewhere hidden in it all, is a Hammond organ filling the small parts that were not filled with guitars. "The party's over", Jagger sings. His band doesn't agree, their fans do not agree. Both soar on.

Dreamy Skies

The 'Faraway Eyes' or better 'No Expectations' of Hackney Diamonds. Of course, we have heard it all before. In 2023 The Stones can still come up with a country blues song that is good to listen to. Dreamy Skies is not the top of this album. It is decent and well played. The slide guitars and acoustic licks make the song very authentic in sound. As a part of the whole album, it's more than okay. As a separate song, The Stones did this better in the past.

Mess It Up

The Stones go disco in 2023 and with a lot of energy at that. The mono start is a bit weird, but once Jagger says "come on" the band charges right in. Listen to the moment the bass joins. Talking about energy. The Stones did disco before but never with this melodic prowess. Mess It Up is so much better than 'Miss You' where the melody is concerned. The power of the band as a whole comes across once again. The ear for detail comes across once again. The little melodies on the guitars fly around from all sides, while the drums keep it up and the bass is really pumping. Jagger's not afraid to use his falsetto. He's back on the dance floor of Studio 54 it seems and enjoying every minute of it.

Live by the Sword

The Stones pre-1994 are back on Hackney Diamonds. Bill Wyman caught a plane to L.A. at the age of 82 and recorded with his old mates as if nothing had changed. Charlie's behind the drums doing what he's good at. Th difference with the rest of the album is striking though. As someone wrote, having Steve Jordan there has not done the band wrong. Don't get me wrong, the whole world would have wanted Charlie Watts to be the drummer on Hackney Diamonds. Now he cannot, Steve Jordan is the logical replacement. Live By The Sword is another Stones rocker that somehow I think is so much better than I've heard in decades. There's not only this amount of energy, it's the way this song comes alive. The original intro already shows this song was not approached in the fashion the band approached new songs for decades. This is not a standard intro, say 'Tumbling Dice', as this became the mould the band worked from for decades. This is more New Orleans or something I think sounds like that. At the same time Live By The Sword looks back to the psychedelic years in the bridge before it's rock that strikes the clock. The song is filled with sounds and yet the piano comes through in a great way and so Elton John gets a shining role on Hackney Diamonds after all. The shade of Ian Stewart heard that things are alright in The Stones realm.

Driving Me Too Hard

Driving Me Too Hard is an anomaly. Let's face it. Who was supposed to sing this song? If anything this is a Keith Richards song. I know, his turn is coming up, but this is a song in a long list of songs that Mick Jagger usually does not sing. The mid-tempo ballad does have a 'Tumbling Dice' kind of intro, without being a rocker. This is a very decent song with a huge sound. Again sounds and melodies come at me from all directions. Again, there's a band at work that was not satisfied with the first and not with the fourth attempt. Keep trying and come up with an even better melodic fill and that is what they did. Great song.

Tell Me Straight

And here is the Keith ballad of 2023. And once again, it is a great ballad. Keith was told to sing with a clear voice and he possesses one, to my surprise. Tell Me Straight is the only song on Hackney Diamonds that has not received loads of overdubs. This song could almost have been played in the studio live with those present, had Mick Jagger sung the background vocals. Elementary or not, I find I really like Keith Richards' contribution to the new album. It has a sweet authentic sound and is totally sympathetic. The ending is a bit abrupt. I would not have minded the chorus once more. But that is truly my only complaint.

Sweet Sounds of Heaven

Of course, I've already praised Sweet Sounds Of Heaven before the release of Hackney Diamonds. Nothing's stopping me from doing so again. We are all circa two months down the road and more and more I'm convinced this is the best Stones single since, I don't know. In it's sort 'Saint Of Me'. Better, it is on par with the best Stones songs never released on single, like 'Gimme Shelter', 'Let It Bleed', 'You Can't Always Get What You Want', 'Time Waits For No One', Memory Motel', 'Melody'. In that stellar category Sweet Sounds Of Heaven must be placed. The sound, the power, the prowess, the total surrender to the greatness of this song. The band must have known it had gold in its hand when they started working on this song. Not for nothing it gets a big, fat reprise, in which Lady Gaga and Mick Jagger go at it and Stevie Wonder goes at it on the Rhodes piano. I know I've imagined the Lady Gaga part being sung by a real gospel singer, fact is the song is already so good. Is Sweet Sounds Of Heaven the icing on the cake or are the other songs just there to make this shine? I settle for the former. This song ought to have been a worldwide number one song and not just the album. I have not heard anything better in the past months, years even.

Rolling Stone Blues

The song the band was named after, finally gets a The Rolling Stones recording. Well, a Jagger-Richards recording. As it is just the two we are hearing, in a mono recording, as if this was recorded in 1963 instead of 2022 or 23. It is that the band itself in the Jimmy Fallon interview at the launch indicated there is more to come, otherwise this would be a great ending to a great career. The circle would have been round, as this ends with how it all started with rock and roll and rhythm and blues recordings. If anything, Rolling Stone Blues shows, once again, how good this band is in presenting renditions of blues originals. Andrew 'Loog' Oldham was totally right telling Jagger and Richards that there would be no future in rehashing out old blues songs and that they had to start writing their own material. And see where that advice brought the band, right up to 'Sweet Sounds Of Heaven'. It takes nothing away from this song. The two show the love they have for the genre and honour their past (inspirations) with real inspired playing on harmonica and guitar.

Like I started with, I was totally surprised by the quality of Hackney Diamonds and in a way I still am, two months later. Every time I play the album, I'm enjoying it so much, in a way that I've not enjoyed a new Stones album since 'Tattoo You'.

I had been prepared a little for Hackney Diamonds. The re-releases of 'Goat's Head Soup' and 'Tattoo You' came with a second cd with outtakes and other versions. Both I played so many times. The three "singles" preceding 'Goat's Head Soup' I could not hear enough and still play. If anything, the songs showed me that I was still craving for new, good Stones songs and I got them. There's not a lot more I need than a good Stones song. It was time I was reminded of that. 2023 was that year.

The top 30 albums of 2023: Part 2, 10 - 2

The albums in the top 10 did not have to compete as hard as the songs below it. These are the albums that, in general, I played the most or that made a great impression but are not suitable to play often, like Rancid on number 10.

My overall impression is that 2023 was a really great year in music. It is typical though that a lot of albums in here stem from the first months of the year. Usually they get sort of snowed under. Not this year, not because the second half was weaker, no the quality is enormous. These albums remained on my radar with ease. The number two only got rooted because of a tremendous surprise, released in October. That album follows tomorrow. The ten albums here really deserve this spot.

10. Tomorrow Never Comes. Rancid

It seems not applicable listening to Tomorrow Never Comes. The title and opening song has already been presented on this blog. If anything it is the blueprint for the whole album. What a surge of energy, what a strong melody and what fun.

http://wonomagazine.blogspot.com/2023/06/tomorrow-never-comes-rancid.html

9. I Am The River, The River Is Me. Jen Cloher

Back in 2017 I already concluded Jen Cloher is the better artist (than Courtney Barnett). She is so much more original and I Am The River, The River Is Me is the proof of point. Music is not a competition. It is there to be enjoyed by those who like it. From the smallest of songs, 'Protest Song' to the more present songs, each one gets the treatment it needs to step forward and shine. It makes for a varied and consistently good album. Oh, yes, did I tell you I Am The River, The River Is Me is totally impressive?

http://wonomagazine.blogspot.com/2023/03/i-am-river-river-is-me-jen-cloher.html

8. The Signal Light. Justine and the Unclean

It is also with a lot of pleasure and enthusiasm that I can write on The Signal Light. The album is good folks. Most likely even better than just good. Time will tell, but the start is truly of headshakin' nature. Justine and The Unclean is rocking on the album and not just a little. The songs are huge in sound and depth.

http://wonomagazine.blogspot.com/2023/06/the-signal-light-justine-and-unclean.html

7. Yay!. Motorpsycho

Yay! truly is different, with a step back to songs that are inspired by songs from the mid 60s and early 70s. The acoustic guitar is the first instrument of choice and Traffic like percussion added. The result is an album filled with psychedelic pop songs and folk songs like they used to be made a long time ago. Harmony singing with influences from the first incarnation of Bee Gees, The Who and CSN. Just some names as I could mention many others.

http://wonomagazine.blogspot.com/2023/06/yay-motorpsycho.html

6. the record. boygenius

The strange thing is, that nearly all reviews on this blog were from the hand of Erwin Zijleman and not mine. I have, hardly, found my way into the music of Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus. Erwin is a fan for years, not me and yet, there's only one word for the record: Great!, including the exclamation mark.

http://wonomagazine.blogspot.com/2023/04/the-record-boygenius.html

5. We Were Girls Together. POM

POM impressed with a string of singles and an EP in the past two years and now impresses with its debut album. We Were Girls Together rings a loud bell for the band. Listening to it is a joy, singing along an irresistible option, dancing to the music mandatory. This band knows how to write, to arrange and record a great song.

http://wonomagazine.blogspot.com/2023/11/we-were-girls-together-pom.html

4. Every Loser. Iggy Pop

The extra points are scored in making this album sound new and fresh. The sound is not retro, so the album is not as well. This is not about recreating what used to be. It is all about releasing the best punk album of 2023. Not all of this album is punk rock musically, the feel and rawness of it is and that's what matters here. We are only in the first days of the year but the mission may have succeeded already. The first album to be jotted down for the favourites of the year. Every Loser is the real deal.

http://wonomagazine.blogspot.com/2023/01/every-loser-iggy-pop.html

3. Love, Death & In Between. DeWolff

Love, Death & In Between over time may well prove to be the album in which the whole DeWolff's musical adventures since 2006 culminate. Everything learned in the studio and on the road comes together here. On record the band may never have sounded this good, so varied and at ease with its musical accomplishments. Where warmth has one out over wanting to score individually. This is a band more than ever before as well. A band that is able to write better songs still, assuring growth. The trip here is phenomenal. It's time to enter the larger venues, here and abroad. The songs and playing deserve it.

http://wonomagazine.blogspot.com/2023/02/love-death-in-between-dewolff.html

2. Aces Eights And Heartbreaks. The Shang Hi Los

The single 'Takes One To Know One' is the absolute top where this sort of music is concerned. Everything I have heard over the past years coming from the principal songwriters Jen D'Angora and Dan Kopka is surpassed by this song. These local heros on the Boston scene have a whole career, perhaps two, behind them before I was introduced to this Boston scene by Rum Bar Records (and since Red On Red Records). A whole world of rock and roll opened itself to me.

The top 30 albums of 2023: part 3, 30 to 11

Like each of the past eleven years WoNoBlog presents its favourite albums of the year. The last couple of years a top 30. As always it was tough to decide which band or artist deserves a spot. After giving it a lot of thought and extra listening sessions, this is what has come out.

30. Interpretative Dancing. The Slow Clock

2023 pop lovers following the charts most likely will not understand this opening sentence but pop is oozing out of Interpretative Dancing like water from a well.

http://wonomagazine.blogspot.com/2023/09/interpretative-dancing-slow-clock.html

29. Not Your Cupid. Erny Ball

The word water surfaced a few times in my posts over the years where music from New Zealand, and especially its female artists, were concerned. Erny Belle brought it up herself, so perhaps she knows what it is in the water that makes herself and these artists write and record music at this high a level. New Zealand is, at a minimum percentage wise if not absolutely, outperforming other countries with ease.

http://wonomagazine.blogspot.com/2023/11/not-your-cupid-erny-belle.html

28. Do You Ever Wonder What Comes Next? Loupe

Loupe has released a beautiful album that the world should learn about. Now I understand that Spotify took care of that with an add on Times Square in NYC?!

http://wonomagazine.blogspot.com/2023/06/do-you-ever-wonder-what-comes-next-loupe.html

27. In Times New Roman. Queens of the Stone Age

I had not bothered to check out the two previous records really. I had lost interest. Curiosity can be stimulated, as the enthusiastic reviews of In New Times Roman did. Yes, I wanted to know if they were correct. Yes, they were.

http://wonomagazine.blogspot.com/2023/06/in-times-new-roman-queens-of-stone-age.html

26. A Living Commodity. Egyptian Blue

A Living Commodity shows a band with promise for the future and I'd say the potential to grow. Just listen to 'To Be Felt' and tell me you don't like it. For a debut album this is more than enough.

http://wonomagazine.blogspot.com/2023/11/a-living-commodity-egyptian-blue.html

25. Turn The Car Around. Gaz Coombes

There's a stack of records written and sung by Gaz Coombes in the home here but none of them is a solo album. Having been able to listen to Turn The Car Around I start to understand in a much better way why there are solo records: this is a songwriter who threw off the chains of expectation.

http://wonomagazine.blogspot.com/2023/01/turn-car-around-gaz-coombes.html

24. Rat Saw God. Wednesday

With Rat Saw God Wednesday makes a huge step towards more fame. Those with more sensitive ears, will just have to skip song #2, more precisely after circa five minutes and enjoy all the rest offered on this album. There remains more than enough for that to happen.

http://wonomagazine.blogspot.com/2023/04/rat-saw-god-wednesday.html

23. Be My Reactor. EUT

With Be My Reactor EUT sets another great step in its career. From a good debut, to a very good second album that is expanded on in every way possible on the third album. Growth, development, focus, determination, experience, whatever you like to call it, is present in abundance on the band's latest. Slowly but surely EUT is growing into one of the better bands of this country. (And then split up right after the release.)

http://wonomagazine.blogspot.com/2023/09/be-my-reactor-eut.html

http://wonomagazine.blogspot.com/2023/01/de-toegift-de-toegift.html

21. Ideal Home Noises. Vera Ellen

Four songs into the album, I am about to let you alone with it. It is extremely worthwhile to get acquainted, be surprised and give it the time to grow. Vera Ellen has set tremendous strides, assisted by producer and multi-instrumentalist Ben Lemi. Together they've made the best album coming from Down Under so far this year, and that tells you something, if you follow this blog.

http://wonomagazine.blogspot.com/2023/04/ideal-home-noises-vera-ellen.html

20. Ebony Lamb. Ebony Lamb

Does something like a soft rocker exist? If so, 'Drive Me Around' qualifies. With a prominent drums and bass they set the basis for the other instruments and singer to play off from. This observation is what sums up Ebony Lamb. It is an extremely strong and good album that puts Ebony Lamb right up with Reb Fountain's 'Reb Fountain' and 'Iris' in my book.

http://wonomagazine.blogspot.com/2023/11/ebony-lamb-ebony-lamb.html

19. Oh Mijn Ziel. broeder Dieleman

http://wonomagazine.blogspot.com/2023/08/oh-mijn-ziel-broeder-dieleman.html

18. Exit Strategy. The Clockworks

The fact that the band was able to land Bernard Butler, once of Suede fame, as producer, attests to the potential. It results in a clear sound, open and with ringing tones, outshining the darker parts that often come with the newest new wave influenced bands. More importantly, the songs nearly all totally convince and that's enough for a debut album. The Clockworks is a band to watch.

http://wonomagazine.blogspot.com/2023/11/exit-strategy-clockworks.html

17. The First Two Pages Of Frankenstein. The National

      :Laugh Track. The National

Yes, cheating a bit, but both albums are very good and deserve a spot. Which one is the better? It depends on my mood, time of day.

More importantly, I notice how rich the music on this album is. Multi-layered music with lots and lots of sounds and instruments to discover with each spin. In other words, The National plays music to listen to through the headphone, secluded from all daily deliberations.

http://wonomagazine.blogspot.com/2023/05/first-pages-of-frankenstein-national.html

http://wonomagazine.blogspot.com/2023/11/laugh-track-national.html

16. Bird Machine. Sparklehorse

Right up to the very end, I'm more than pleased with what I'm hearing. Whatever the original recordings sounded like, we'll probably have to live until the 10 to 40 year deluxe edition to find out. In the latter case chances are I never will. It's inconsequential. Bird Machine is a fine addition to Sparklehorse's oeuvre.

http://wonomagazine.blogspot.com/2023/09/bird-machine-sparklehorse.html

15. Honeycomb Shades. Robin Kester

Yesterday I read on Twitter something like "Everybody has already said what a brilliant album Honeycomb Shades is, so what can I add"? I have to agree here but add that I want to express what I think of the album....Robin Kester plays a very modern pop with many references to the past. From French sigh girls and Serge Gainsbourg, thus the Air style bass sound to Moss and Amber Arcades well into this century. Elements of it all comes by. Alternative enough to be credible, electronic enough to be modern and pop enough to find a song on the radio, I hope. A star ought to be born, is my opinion

http://wonomagazine.blogspot.com/2023/03/honeycomb-shades-robin-kester.html

14. Save Yourself. traumahelikopter

Somewhere in the recent past years I started to assume that traumahelikopter was no more (and maybe it wasn't for a while). In the fall of 2022 the world was made a little better with the release of a new single that met with a favourable reception on this blog. It led to some high expectations as well. The trio, drums and two guitars, delivers the goods.

http://wonomagazine.blogspot.com/2023/01/save-yourself-traumahelikopter.html

13. Info Rock. Fake Indians

There's no need for more words here. Info Rock is so full of excitement and energy, that it tells its own tale. Fake Indians is a band that lovers of all sorts of rock should find their way to. Who said that rock was dead? Jim Morrison? Well, he was proven wrong, once again.

http://wonomagazine.blogspot.com/2023/09/info-rock-fake-indians.html

12. Did You Know That There's A Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd. Lana Del Rey

Where her singing is concerned, she is moving towards French sigh girls of the 60s, and the Gainsbourg-Doillon dynasty today, more and more, while also hinting at some kind of trash-chique in her phrasing. Moving in and out by the line. It all adds to the mystery that surrounds Did You Know That There's A Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd and Lana Del Rey herself.

http://wonomagazine.blogspot.com/2023/06/did-you-know-that-theres-tunnel-under.html

11. Lonely Citizen. Indian Askin

Overseeing the whole album and the previous output, it is clear that without the band Ayala has allowed other accents to enter his work. Although it is impossible for me to know what Lonely Citizen would have sounded like in the old context, what I'm hearing today gives the impression that Nelson Ayala is freed from constraints. The sound and songs are more varied and different.

Album van het jaar van Erwin Zijleman: Never Have I Ever. NAAZ

Never Have I Ever is een geweldig indiepop album met vooral ingetogen songs.

Deze week keert ze terug met haar debuutalbum, Never Have I Ever.

sĆøn of dad. Stephen Wilson Jr.

Hollow. The Handsome Family

Hollow is in alle opzichten een typisch The Handsome Family album.

Zo is de openingstrack Joseph gebaseerd op de woorden “Come into the circle Joseph!

This Time. Ismena

Bijzonder indrukwekkend.

Bobbie. Pip Blom

"Don't forget to listen to our album", was the message from @Pipblom on X, following my review of one of the singles. It took me a long time to get into the stride of Bobbie. Despite returning to the album time and again, there was something keeping me from writing and many-a-time I was about to give up. I haven't and am ready to write, finally.

Why now? One part is the pop feel of Bobbie finally catching up with me. Another part is the seduction in the voice of Pip Blom that did not come across for quite some time. The third element is the fact that several of the songs are simply so much better than I first thought.

Undeniably, Bobbie is different from the band's first two albums. They were good but not absolute favourites. Bobbie takes a right turn towards pop music. There's more electronics and happy-go-lucky melodies. This distracted me no little from what is really happening on the album. Pip Blom jumped into the 00s pop and punkfunk. The combination comes out at high level it turns out. It shows how a listener can be distracted from the precious stones that lie underneath, hiding in plain sight.

The electronics that start 'Tiger' for example. So 1980s, but the decade seldom had the swing Pip Blom manages to put into the song. This is more sex than doom, to put it plainly. Pip Blom has grown as a band and its singer as vocalist. Despite the fact the band's a trio now and translating the fact their drummer, Gini Cameron, left the band to have a baby, to a live setting without one, on record Cameron was still there. This is a band that dared to make the next step, to experiment beyond what current fans may expect. My guess is that this album will land the band more fans than it had before. Bobbie is a more mature album, that allows for partying as well. An album that combines the head, the heart and the soul.

The collaborations with Personal Trainer's. and Pip Blom's partner, Willem Smit and Franz Ferdinand's Alex Kapranos work well. The first is almost a dance track and took me a lot of time to digest. Now I have, I recognise the quality the song contains. With Kapranos Pip Blom made a modern form of a Franz Ferdinand song holding only a little back from what the Glasgow band would do itself. Both are proof of the development of Pip Blom. This very much is the real thing.

What Pip Blom dares to do, is rock, like in 'Where Did You Get My Number?' There are beats underneath it all, but this is rock alright. The band really goes for it, loud and clear. Pip Blom is so much more straight forward in its goals and achievements. It really shows what it is capable of and so is singer Pip Blom. As if she's no longer hiding herself and really takes the centre stage. Where she should be as singer and principal songwriter.

What surprises me most perhaps, at this stage in my relation with Bobbie, is that the album still has the capability to grow further. You do not find it in my favourite albums of 2023, but perhaps you should ask me again next year where I will be in hindsight.

Bobbie caught me off guard and presented me with something that I did not want to hear, at first. At this point zero the adventure started and I'm still progressing. Usually a situation an album wants to be in. To be continued...

The Pleasures Of Self Deception. LIJO

2023 week 50, 10 singles

From West-Flanders to Portland, Oregon and who knows what in between. This week you can find artists that far and wide apart, in a geographical and language sense. Also from a softer than soft, to wild rock and from a contemplative to wild abandon perspective on music. You will find it all in there this week, so enjoy!

World Brand New. Mouth of Babes

When did I see Girlyman perform in Leiden with Ingrid Elizabeth present as driver and guest musician? That fatal tour that spelled the end of the combo? Looking it up, it was in the first months of this blog, May 2012. Since singer-guitarist Ty Greenstein forms a duo with Ingrid Elizabeth called Mouth of Babesm that makes its debut on WoNoBlog. This is exactly the kind of song I remember from the Girlyman show. A tremendously pleasant pop song with a folk influence graced by beautiful harmonies. Greenstein - Elizabeth sing together in a beautiful way. Greenstein lead and Elizabeth in all the places where an extra vocal creates instant power. The lyrics are about a situation we all desire after a day's hard work, a stable and loving home. The two obviously have it together. I'm happy to tell you that so have I and this song underscores it all.

Guilty Of That. Tony Marsico

Let's face it. Tony Marsico not only sounds like he was a members of The Searchers at the time of 'Needles And Pins', he looks it too. Add a The Byrds sounding Rickenbacker guitar and everyone listening to this song, and has some musical "education" when younger than 68 years old, is catapulted back to the golden pop era from before the summer of love, so 1964-1966. When The Beatles still held hands, The Byrds electrified Dylan and The Searchers scored a few hitsingles. Guilty Of That is not that good a song, sorry. What it is, is a very pleasant song, pulling so much together that it is as if I have known this song for decades already, instead of past few minutes. A modern and younger band like The Maureens does the same, but sounds modern as well. Tony Marsico goes for the authentic sound and succeeds as this could be a good outtake from the latter two mentioned bands. In other words, well done.

Water Underground. Real Estate

This review can only be started with the comment that Water Underground sounds so familiar that it is almost as if the song has always existed, in one form or another played by a host of bands from the past two decades. Whether they be called Beach Fossils, or Real Estate. Fact is, Water Underground is a beautiful song in the indie and dreampop segments of pop music. The sound is so soft, the guitars meander slowly like a brook through a dense forest. The water trickling everywhere from rocks and sticks, softly cascading towards the river downstream. There's absolutely no danger in this song, that adds a little R.E.M. along the way. It's just a simple song but one that puts a smile on anybody's face immediately.

The Frost. The Pineapple Thief

Somewhere in this song a symphonic rock band is hiding. I'm not a connoisseur of the genre but can recognise a Fish-era Marillion influence when I hear it. The Frost starts for me with the drumming of Gavin Harrison. His accents, double, triple bassdrum riffs and intricate hi-hat fills over all the "regular" drumming jump out to me. Without exerting power on his instrument, he's totally present, driving The Frost, while standing out immediately. Like Harrison is holding back, the band is for most of the time as well. Except in an instrumental piece that keeps returning, like a wordless second chorus, in which they all go full out, to return for a final time in the short outro. Over the very present drums, the bass plays short accents, underscoring the drums. The guitars and keyboards can provide the melodies, following the vocal melody. All together The Pineapple Thief presents a great, almost six minute long single, that keeps up the suspense for the whole of the time.

Divine Is The Illusion. The Devils

That the devil lives in Naples is not that strange. With a huge volcano at the doorstep and a very active volcanic field around the corner, fire and brimstone are available in abundance. For the devil the divine is nothing but an illusion provided by a mighty adversary. I don't believe in either. That devil is inside of us all. It is societal rules and the love for people close to one, that assist in containing it. The Devils have had enough of Humanity, it's video starts with proclaiming. I tend to disagree but listening to a song like Divine Is The Illusion is no punishment. The heavily distorted guitar and bass and the loud pounding on the drums spell rock and roll to me. The White Stripes variety of rock and roll is, when played right, exciting and The Devils play it. Singer and drummer Erika Switchblade has the voice to support this kind of rock and roll and guitarist Gianni Blacula's riffs to do the rest. The drums do the rest. In Erika Switchblade Meg White has a worthy successor.

A Small Universe. Melle Kromhout

And now for something completely different, to quote a famous tv show from over 50 years ago. Melle Kromhout has released his new album, 'Most of the Light Passes Through', this week. 'A Small Universe'  is one of the singles. The instrumental piece is not the easiest to get attached to, in the beginning. A rhythm that seemingly comes to the listener from the other side of the city opens the composition. A little, two-note melody is added before more comes in later moving around that melody. The sound of the lead instrument, my guess is a synth perhaps organ, gives the song a hint of Irish folk music and when the rhythm really comes in, that feeling is confirmed. By then I have been drawn into A Small Universe. Kromhout's single is intriguing because it is never fully clear what will happen next. Will there be another change? You can find out for yourself....

Ruined. Adrianne Lenker

When several years ago an album of Adriann Lenker, 'Abysskiss', laid in my mailbox, I had no idea who she was and had never heard of her band Big Thief. Today, it's the other way around, Adrianne Lenker releases a new solo album following huge successes with her band. Ruined is a bare song. Piano and atmospheric sounds are the basis of this song, with Lenker really taking the lead with her soft and meandering vocals. The result is impressive. The feeling she shares with all listening, "when you come around, I'm ruined", comes across more than double because of the mysterious sounds surrounding voice and piano. The video accompanying is the absolute antithesis of the song, despite the ambiguity. It shows the happiness of two people being together, but also a lot of loneliness, so there is some explaining to do as well. It doesn't take anything away from the intricate and delicate beauty of Ruined. Adrianne Lenker is in absolute top form here.

To Art Bell. Canyons and Locusts

In the late 90s Art Bell had, from what I'm reading from a quote here, a rather esoteric midnight show. The man is no longer alive, hence the title of this fresh-sounding rock song by Boston-Phoenix duo Canyons and Locusts. The song starts in a way that sets it apart from most others. It's like an old steam train getting into its stride before it gets into its rhythm. As it were, you can hear the pistons starting to churn in the first 30 seconds of this song, that clocks at only 134 of them. I love the way the rhythm changes from the stop-start to the seemingly ever faster rhythm before the singing starts. The rock song that unfolds fits in well with the legacy of Boston rock bands from the 1990s. The video is something to watch as well. It's a piece of art in its own right.

White Trucks. Lions of the Interstate

In a way White Trucks reminds me of 'Water Underground' by Real Estate, see above. Both songs have that soft voice singing. Lions of the Interstate is a lot less subtle when it comes to playing though and I might add, a tad more frivolous in the arrangement. While the song has that dreamy quality thanks to the singing, the band comes in quite soon to shake everyone awake to pay attention. Lions of the Interstate is a band that grew its members over a few years. It started in 2019 when two friends started a new band together and from there asked others to join, including two they played with in a The Smiths cover band. There is an album out, 'Strange Empires', and White Trucks is a great add for it. The mysterious radio or 27MC talking snippets, the trumpet that comes in at the end, the level of rock the band is able to conjure up, it is all spot on.
