Money Time. And They Spoke In Anthems

And They Spoke In Anthems is quite a name for a band. It holds more than a promise, it comes with heaps of expectations, perhaps even obligations. Something alike ...And They Will Know Us By The Trail Of The Dead. That band lived up to its name alright over the past two decades. How are things here?

Different, almost opposites. And They Spoke In Anthems is a one man band filled by Arne Leurentop. With Money Time he releases his second album after 'June'. The music is soft, yet certainly present. Meandering itself into my ears, ever so sweetly, yet fully determined. "It's me, it's me", Leurentop sings with several little high-pitches voices in the back of 'Leaving You Cold'. As if I hadn't noted and was left cold. What were you thinking?

This is the way of the music on Money Time. It creeps up slowly, touches you, affects you and is determined to never let go. Not all songs work like 'Leaving You Cold' though, the vaudeville tinged 'Message From The Future' is musically set decades into the past, from before my personal past. Think what Gregory Page is good at, with a less authentic sound to the music. At the same time it's clear 'Message From The Future' is well made. Compensation kicks in I notice.

Nostalgia is a mood that is all over Money Time. There is a paradox as Leurentop is not afraid of using modern instruments and sounds, yet gives of a feel of long gone times. I am totally okay with it though. Hear the guitars snarl in the back of the dramatically voiced violins in 'Dialogue For Pieces'. Again two worlds meet that can't in real life. What is gone is gone. Not in movies and music though and And They Spoke In Anthems uses that possibility to great effect on his album.

In everything on this album modesty is a quality that does not get in the way of the effect the album has. Arne Leurentop can afford to be modest. The soft voice, the quiet sound only draw me in ever nearer, until the album becomes all enveloping. No, Money Time is no masterpiece, but surely very well done. Convincing and powerful in its own, modest, way.

There are little surprises in most of the songs that give themselves away slowly but surely. A different background vocal, an unexpected instrument, a little turn out of nowhere. Anything is possible except strong eruptions. That already mentioned guitar is it for eruptions. The basis remains a quiet song that meanders into your ear. Take your time, let Money Time do its thing and you will find that a richness in music has enveloped you, capture you and taken you in. Money Time equals quality time, if you allow it to do so.

"Read that blog"! Bubble Gum. De Staat

Everyone his own bubble is the theme of the fifth album of De Staat, one of the bands on this planet that mixes hard rock with hard-edged hip hop in a perfect way. With Bubble Gum De Staat is at its peak, yet stares in the face of a cul-de-sac. Can it become bigger than Bubble Gum? No, and the band hints at other solutions and even directions on Bubble Gum.

De Staat is a special band in more than a musical way. The first album was recorded by singer/guitarist Torre Florim without a band around him. L'état c'est moi. Florim was the first person who could rightfully claim this after Louis XIV. In order to perform the music he needed a band and that band, having started as a live act is still together. In fact I'm certain that the strength of De Staat is determined by the five piece band and not just by Torre Florim's ideas.

That strength grew by the album culminating in a better album by the album. Fiercer, stronger, melodically better, fatter beats and extremities. De Staat grew in popularity by the album as well and now is one of the big rock bands of The Netherlands. On 'O', the fourth album all the influences came together in a perfect blend, with even a few radio hits on the album. Yet, how to tackle that fifth album?

De Staat toured Europe with Muse and that is no real surprise. Although De Staat is a little more extreme in its music, the fact that in interviews the band states it is in the same position as Muse was some years back, is accurate. Muse had to sort of reinvent itself when it could go no higher, bigger, etc. After experimenting for two albums two great albums were released, 'Drones' (2015) and 'Simulation Theory' (2018). With Bubble Gum De Staat is where Muse was 13 years ago. Nothing is bigger than 'Knights Of Cydonia' is there?

Back to our subject, Bubble Gum.The album starts with a sound like a ship's horn calling out through the fog. There's a drum but everything else is electronics producing deep, dark beats. Trump's election and campaign is the theme of 'KITTY KITTY'. In a way De Staat is even holding back. The beat has a slight stutter, without putting it on to evidently. Where the band is branching out is on the huge synth sound (or a guitar effect to the max) in the instrumental parts. Rhythmically this is all very well done and a great opener  to Bubble Gum.

Torre Florim is not afraid to use his voice in a higher registry and he's singing here and there instead of the declamating/chanting he usually does. The auto thingy in 'Fake It Till You Make It' is in line with the title. Again the rhythm is worked out to a tee. Drummer Tim van Delft really grasps a headliner here and doesn't let go. Before this sort of rhythm is internalised the De Staat members must have been counting and counting and counting to get this right.

Listening to the first songs I realise that only a multi million dollar budget could make the sound of Bubble Gum bigger and thus better. Just listen to the stutter of 'Mona Lisa'. Of course we have heard this before, not in the least in 'Witch Doctor', melodically this is a much better song. it holds a few surprises in melody and singing. 'Mona Lisa' is anything but predictable the way it seemed to be when the song started.

The first real surprise is 'Phoenix'. An air raid siren combined with the sound of a crashing plane starts the song. I brace myself for the loudest De Staat beat ever and get a 70s ballad spiced up with modern electronics. Torre Florim is singing and singing higher. De Staat is able to write and play a song that simply flows like ballads of old. Something new for sure, with enough De Staat elements to keep hardcore fans pleased (or ought to be). 'Level Up' makes amends for those offended immediately, but again the melody is woven into the rhythm in a beautiful way. With 'Me Time' I'm transported into the stadium of my favourite football club. An extreme beat like this can all of a sudden pop up in between the familiar football tunes before the match. Familiar De Staat territory 'Me Time' is.

The duet with LUWTEN is another surprise. The female voice in a duet works really well in 'Tie Me Down'. The beats and accents again battle with melodies. Tessa Douwstra's voice is able to lead De Staat easily. Another one of the highlights on this album. It seems it is full of them. What De Staat gets better and better at is to hide small pop elements into its, at times, uncompromising music. That leads to compromise but only at the highest levels possible, that of perfect synergy. In the final surprise, 'Luther', a Bowie element is incorporated that works really well in this context.

I fully realise that this is not a record I can play anytime, anywhere. Already I can hear the comments around the house if I put this on. At the same time, when I'm alone Bubble Gum is the kind of record I want to play loud and dance across the room to on my own. After a few listening sessions I also realise that De Staat has surpassed itself again. The new elements woven into this production make it, again, more diverse and stronger. That cul-de-sac is obviously no dead end street for De Staat, just a closed roundabout leading back to the main road where many options await. Listening to Bubble Gum I know this is the scenario De Staat will follow. I am seriously contemplating to score the album the full *****.

Wo.

Heart To Mouth. LP

Heart To Mouth is een vat vol tegenstrijdigheden.

The Hex. Richard Swift

Prachtig.

Richard Swift overleed afgelopen zomer.

Future Ruins. Swervedriver

Funny how an album that basically sounds the same for 10 songs, perhaps even like all Swervedriver's albums of the past decades and still totally be okay. The loop on the cover of Future Ruins is of a level of excitement that is totally missing on the album, yet things are alright.

Swervedriver is around for decades, with a missing decade in the 00s, making Future Ruins only its sixth album. For a band that started in 1989 this is not a large output.

Guitars play a large role on the album. They lay down the layer of sound, propelled forward by drums and bass, over which Adam Franklin sings his downtrodden songs. Happiness is not found in this beat it seems. Franklin's voice reminds me of Teenage Fanclub, a kind of singing where emotions are sort of absent. As if music is not an outlet for, let alone a conveyor or even instigator of emotions. Of course music and vocals are in perfect balance.

To enjoy the music of Swervedriver it is important to notice the little guitar lines woven into the wall of sound, the extra notes the bass player presents us with and the drum fills on the side of the larger picture. Accept some feedback and (short) drones here and there and you will get the larger picture. A song like 'Golden Remedy' works exemplary here.

It is 'Everybody's Going Somewhere and No One's Going Anywhere' and 'Radio Silent' that are the odd ones out. More atmosphere than song it makes the psychedelic tendencies of Swervedriver come out. Tendencies that are a minor part of the whole of Future Ruins. Underneath the shoegazing, alternative rock there is a large component stemming from 60s (garage) rock, not unlike the already mentioned Teenage Fanclub and the über 60s emulator Big Star and its "kids" The Posies.

All this comes together on Future Ruins and like I already mentioned things are simply okay in the world when I play Future Ruins.

We mochten fragmenten raden.

Get Tragic. Blood Red Shoes

It was frighteningly quiet around Blood Red Shoes in the past years. At the end of the last tour the strings that attached this duo were nearly passed breaking point. All sort of other personal mishaps got on top of these unhappy times as well.

Get Tragic is a logical title of Blood Red Shoes' fifth album and I am glad to write that there is a fifth album. Being a fan from the first album onward, with 'In Time To Voices', the third album, as absolute favourite, a new album is always something to look out for.

Laura-May Carter and Steven Ansell have managed to come up with a new album and it is fortunate they did so. Yes, it is more laidback in places compared to previous albums, but there is so much to enjoy on Get Tragic. Even songs that could be the soundtrack of the new James Bond movie and for the one after that. The only thing needs doing is work the title into the lyrics. The music is more than just a duo setting. There are keyboards and (digital) percussive stuff.

Being, at heart, a guitar - drums duo, Blood Red Shoes has always been more. The songs are divided between the two. Vocal duties are shared, besides the harmonies, making all albums varied. Get Tragic is no different. For me this works extremely well, as both Carter and Ansell have pleasant voices to listen to. It makes one + one = two and a half at a minimum and often three.

Promo photo: Nedda Asfari
Compared to previous albums Blood Red Shoes has worked in a lot more electronics than before. Impossible to play as a duo. So I'm curious how the new songs will be played live. A backing track?, bare?, or with a keyboard player/guitarist? Not everyone is a Jack White, running from instrument to instrument on stage and making noise for ten.

As I started the review, Blood Red Shoes had a hard time finishing this album. Writing sessions started already in 2015, but took some time to finish. In the meantime they worked on their own label, Jazz Life. Members of one of the signees, Tigercub, play on Get Tragic, so indeed a change to approach.

The opening song could well be a hint at the past, troubled experiences, 'Eye To Eye', in the sense of not seeing. Well, unhappy artists seem to write good to great songs. There are several to be found on Get Tragic. To start with 'Mexican Dress'. A propulsive rhythm drives on this song, with Laura-May Carter at her absolute best as singer. The rhythm changes and dynamics do the rest. 'Mexican Dress' is the kind of song that makes me simply love Blood Red Shoes.

'Bangsar' has this delicious build up, working towards a great chorus, while 'Nearer' has these James Bond elements within it. Tucking into the album by the song, the variation shines through. It makes Get Tragic a lot less direct, but gives it an extra layer. A layer of surprise and one of depth. There's simply more to discover and enjoy. That said there is no song that comes close to my absolute favourite Blood Red Shoes song '7 Years' with that fantastic ending. I played that song so many times in 2012. I'm not complaining though. Get Tragic is a fine album and I'm glad to have the band back and in fine, musical shape.

Better Late Than Never. Nat Freedberg

There are moments in life that are extremely annoying. The picture on the front of this album by Nat Freedberg is one of them. Often there is no one else to blame for coming too late, is there? Perhaps that fact makes missing the bus/train/etc. so extremely annoying.

Better Late Than Never contains nothing that annoys. In fact the album brings nothing but pleasure. Freedberg rocks the world a little in his own laidback style and nasal, elementary way of singing. Nothing is made better than it is and all is just fine.

With his his single Devil Rockin' Man he had already made these pages (read on here: http://wonomagazine.blogspot.com/2018/12/devil-rockin-man-dan-freedberg.html) while making this promise of a whole album coming soon. My main question was whether his what you hear is what you get style would amuse me for a whole album. Fact is that I would buy it immediately should I run to it in my local record store, that unfortunately is a long, long way from Boston where Freedberg usually haunts local venues.

Coincidentally I heard 'Taillights Fade', Buffalo Tom's first (near) hit single over here in NL. Listening to 'Only Takes A Minute' I know exactly where the two songs meet. Freedberg captures the energy and melodic strength and leaves out the sense of loss permeating 'Taillights Fade'. Freedberg shows the directness of a hard working man going about his business not being affected too much by daily life and even better at hiding his feelings when it does. Like this life this album moves forward, somewhat predictable because of it but never wavering nor faltering.

The line "All my love lives on, all my love still strong" tells it all. In a style bringing R.E.M. to mind, with Peter Buck tremelo effects, the song goes ever forward.

Nat Freedberg is not the best singer and he knows it. He delivers his songs without any frills. Singing in the way he knows he comes across. Vocally that makes the album somewhat one dimensional, were it not that his way of delivery not only fits the music, it simply works in this context. A slight tone of contempt for everything, without turning into a sneer, is in his voice. An old punkrocker about his old tricks.

Promo photo
Freedberg started his forays in music in 1981 in a band called Flies and fronted several bands through the years that never reached me. Better Late Than Never, his first solo effort, has and so we have a great album title celebrating both these fortunate occasions. Rocking songs like "I think I Died And Went To Heaven' or 'World To Come' make my world a little better. They are also the songs that give the album a kick in the proverbial ass at the right moment. They are just a little different and breath life, fire, wildness. Songs that are just a little dangerous.

Better Late Than Never rocks. It is that simple. The guitars are all over the place. Several layers have been stacked on top of each other. The firm drumming by Ducky Carlisle sets a firm pace for all others to follow. And follow they do.

This album is perfectly balanced. After a strong start, a little dip, from the middle part onwards it only gets better and better. "Madame Butterfly' ought to be a huge hit or at a minimum all over rock radio. This song is so much fun, with the rhythmic little piece of guitar playing and a great chorus it has it all. (Okay, it is followed by a bit schmalzy ballad, that shows that Freedberg gets away with a ballad to.) At the right moments Nat Freedberg allows for a little pop element, an injection that does Better Late Than Never a whole lot of good. Again the word balance comes to mind.

Summing it all up, Nat Freedberg delivers a fine first solo album. It rocks out in all the right ways and then this just a little bit more. Better late than never, need I write more? Yes, better safe than sorry, as this is a great, rocking record you do not want to miss.

Live In Atlantic City. Heart

Is it possible to remember where one was when hearing a song for the first time after nearly 43 years? In some cases the answer is yes. Where 'Magic Man' is concerned I would say at the place of my aunt and uncle in Rotterdam while staying there. I am not sure though, where with 'More Than A Feeling' by Boston I am 100% sure, which is from about the same time.

'Magic Man' that sonic adventure, with the two pretty women fronting the band, made, an impression on an adolescent, like 'Crazy' did soon afterwards. 1977 brought 'Barracuda' and the album 'Little Queen'. A few nice albums followed with a live album that introduced me to the Led Zeppelin rock song of the Led Zeppelin rock songs: 'Rock And Roll'. When in the mid 80s and early 90s Heart moved into AOR ballads my time with the band was over and I moved on. The impression that that first album made, with the juncture between folk and rock music in indelible.

In the Seattle music museum, in that futuristic building in 2003 I saw one of Ann Wilson's dresses hang and thought back to those great songs that I hadn't played for years at the time. Somewhere along the line I remember an MTV unplugged show with Nancy Wilson breaking a string on her guitar in 'Barracuda'. Every once a while on the radio the sparks still fly though.

Come the last days of 2018 and a new album by Heart is dropped in my mailbox. Is it something I am waiting for? Of course not. Does it add to what has gone before? Neither, except that on most songs the band invites guests on stage even to such a level that Alice in Chains plays two whole songs of its own with Ann Wilson on background vocals in 'Rooster'.

Listening to Live In Atlantic City of course that spark called Heart touches me once again. The band's best songs come by, all the early hitsingles, so who could not to be touched? "Welcome to our living room", Ann Wilson announces the show and off goes the band. Whoever plays in Heart nowadays, the band delivers.

Nowadays? In 2018 the band is on hiatus for two years after Ann's husband was arrested after assaulting Nancy's then 16 year old twins, with the sisters no longer on speaking terms ever since and both playing in other bands. So what am I listening to then?

It turns out this album contains the recording of a special live show from 2006, where the two sisters invited other musicians and friends to come and play with them. Two Led Zeppelin standards come by, as said two Alice in Chains classics and many-a Heart song. Most spanning from the first two years when the band mixed it folk and hard rock roots, not unlike Led Zeppelin did, and 'Alone' as sole survivor of the AOR period, reminding me why I did not really like it at the time. And still do not really. Time softens my ears often, but not really here. 'Alone' is too tame for me, after what had come before. I do not really care for the 80s musically in many ways. The "earsoftening" usually happens with songs by artists I never liked, but some sort of nostalgia comes in when hearing the songs decades later.

So, summing up. A nice live album by a band I once liked a lot. Heart was new and fresh, different to my adolescent experience. In 2006 and released 13 years later, it is a rehash of what once was. Certainly one in great shape and full of fire. So a worthy release to fill up the hiatus and an interesting one thanks to all the collaborations. When all is said and done, if I ever play a Heart album again, it will be my old albums though.

Ladies Wilson, its time to patch up and continue where you were before the incident. You've lived through all other storms for so many years. So wheather this one as well.

Henry St. Alea

Balsturig. Meindert Talma

Elf nummers over voetbal(lers).

The Maureens live. JVC De Schuit, Katwijk Saturday 18 January 2018

Acoustic: photo Wo.
A new album is coming soon. In four weeks time, 15 February, The Maureens will present 'Something In The Air' in Tivoli and I can tell from visiting two of the four shows The Maureens gave in De Schuit the album at a minimum must be promising. One beautiful popsong after another was presented to me in a venue I did not recognise at all.

Although it is somewhere in the previous decade I think I visited Katwijk for a pop show last. Cracker, travelling in a dreamliner the size bands filling stadiums travel in, filled everything in front of De Schuit. There's a whole new stage nowadays. Quite nice for a village the size of Katwijk.

The Maureens played here as part of a festival called Warm Winter Fest. A, quite smelly, oil drum fire provided the heat on a real winter evening. Three acoustic shows were played in the bar area of which I saw the final one. New songs and old favourites were played. An acoustic guitar, one electric and only small percussive instruments. Three voices looking for every harmony possible within a tune and finding them, with such ease.

Electric: Photo Wo.
Something has changed between previous album 'Bang The Drum' (2015) and now. Three members of the band left and were replaced only by bass player and co-singer Wouter Zijlstra. This obviously changed the whole dynamics within the band. The Jayhawks' standard of the Louris - Olsen tandem in singing has been left behind. Now there is one voice main voice, Hendrik-Jan de Wolff's. Also the role of guitarist Martijn Vink has totally changed. With a Peter Visser enthusiasm he now plays for three: filling the spaces of a guitar, the keyboard and himself. This allows him to explore songs near endlessly with melodies, fills and effects, while enjoying himself and thus the audience, tremendously. At the same time The Maureens has become more direct. A dynamic accent in a song is easier to reach with four than with six men playing. The at times three piece harmonies are still in place and are so enjoyable.

The Maureens mach 3 is a band to go and see for everyone who likes perfect pop music. The Beatles influenced, with U.S. elements like the already mentioned The Jayhawks thrown in for good measure and with Dutch pop from the 60s onwards to top things off. Together with Maggie Brown this is my favourite Dutch pop band.

Photo Wo.
I felt truly honoured that after the show I was presented an album in person. So it is time to stop writing and start listening. If the show is anything to go by, it is going to be a pleasure.

It Won/t Be Like This All The Time. The Twilight Sad

What a hideous cover or is it just me? The music far from corresponds with hollowed out humans or it has to be in the fact that the music of The Twilight Sad sounds kind of despondent and far from happy.

It Won/t Be Like This All The Time is the band's first album since 2014. To my surprise I found four albums of the band in my digital collection and I'm sorry to say they made so little impression on me that I had forgotten all about them. So how does the new album fare?

A lot better, to fall into the house door and all. Yes, the atmosphere is not a happy one. Yes, the 80s are extremely close in this music. Yes, It Won/t Be Like This All The Time has an urgency to it that makes it inescapable in a way. 'I'm Not Here Missing Face' is sort of all over me. 'Auge Maschine' could even be called a party track if The Twilight Sad was into a thing called parties. Despite the 80s synths, the aim is towards Editors heights. The song begs playing in large venues. Yes, the Scottish accent in the singing is a little harder to listen to. Geordie Paul Smith of Maxïmo Park comes to mind in the way singer James Graham delivers his words and phrases.

The further I move into the album the bolder and larger the songs (seem to) become. The amount of subtlety several songs in the first half of the album possess slowly leaves the music. On the positive side there no longer is a reason not to move. The tempo is up and limbs loosen up all by themselves. On the negative side a whole album of this music makes the listening experience a long haul. The heavy handedness of The Twilight Sad makes it a long sit all in all.

Hence the subtle begin of final song 'Videograms' comes as a surprise. The sound is outdated, the urgency intact.

Like many bands in the late 10s The Twilight Sad is at a crossroad. Musically retro is more in vogue that perhaps ever, which as such is okay, except that many artists have no idea on how to evolve into that extra, innovative direction. The steps made by bands like Franz Ferdinand, Arctic Monkeys, Kaizers Orchestra in the 00s seem to have mostly lost their momentum. Innovation is not going to come from The Twilight Sad it seems. In fact, the band is looking back more than ever it seems and seriously trying to hook up with Editors fans, another band that has stopped evolving, despite producing fine albums.

Having drawn this conclusion, It Won/t Be Like This All The Time -the title does hold a promise, does it not?- has its moments, some even fine moments. It certainly makes a statement and holds a promise but things have to become a step better, contain its own take on music, to come to that place where audiences fill the venues where a stadium song truly becomes a Stadium Song.

Men verstond mij, Hollander, feilloos.

2000 Motels Live, Patronaat Haarlem, Sunday 13 January 2019

Tribute bands are no longer an exception in the program of venues. They come by in all shapes and seizes. International touring bands, sort of endorsed by the original, bands in which no original member is playing but the name continues on, there is The Analogues of course, bands that are more or less cover bands and everything in between.

My first show in 2019 was with a Frank Zappa tribute band called 2000 Motels. It was years since I played most of my Zappa records. With the exception of 'One Size Fits All' all records by Zappa remain in their allotted, alphabetical, chronological order in respective shapes and sizes. That fact was not keeping me from going.

Zappa live? Yes, in 1980 and 1982 in Ahoy, Rotterdam. I remember the more negative experience strangely enough. The man kept playing guitar solos in 1982. There was just no end and they all sounded the same. Everything he did was an excuse to "take it away" or he was the conductor waving his baton at the band, leading them through all the complex parts.

Not so with 2000 Motels. Here it is the singer who created the band around him. Of course there were some nice solos but the songs of Zappa stood central here and not the compositions or the improvising side of Zappa. Hence it was easy to have a good time. It all started with 'Can't Afford No Shoes'. I certainly can not sing along to all Zappa songs, but this one I know by heart. It grabbed me immediately and brought me into the mood for this show. The blues-rock song from my favourite album, yeah!

All sort of different songs came by from the 60s to the 80s. 'Uncle Remus', 'Sharleena', 'I Don't Wanna Get Drafted', Zappa's greatest hit, #3 in Sweden -Wikipedia tells differently: #1 in Sweden and Norway with Bobby Brown in 1979-, 'Let's Make The Water Turn Black' just to name a few. The intro to Gruppo Sportivo's(!?) 'Superman' came by.

What 2000 Motels managed to show was how diverse Zappa's oeuvre is even without going into the heavy stuff. Even the most simple songs are adorned with all sorts of complexities, rhythmic oddities, etc. For an at heart four piece instrumental band, impossible to copy. No percussionist, no second and third guitarist, no horns, no five different singers.

And that brings me to the weakest part of 2000 Motels, mind this is written with a lot of respect for Wouter Helmink and Olga Meijer, there is no way one band can even loosely emulate the diversity of voices Frank Zappa let loose on the world. Let alone the, well almost, weirdest one of all: his own. Ray White, Ike Willis, Napoleon 'Murphy' Brock, George Duke, Ray Collins and all those others. To their credit the two singers of 2000 Motels are who they are, don't pretend to be someone else and do a great job.

The Zappa groove in the instrumental parts/solos comes across so nicely. Drums and bass get into the groove with obvious pleasure. It is guitarist Jan van der Veen who takes the spotlight most with his recreation of Zappa's solos. Playing them with obvious delight and such a strong sense of timing. I really admired that. Adding it all up, 2000 Motels certainly comes out the right way.

What is also obvious, in 2019 with #MeToo just behind us, most of the lyrics Zappa wrote to provoke the Tipper Gore's of this world, just can't be written any more. There was a time for them and that time was circa 1980. The sniggering I did at the lyrics, as far as I understood them, I'll admit, now turn into a little embarrassment. Let's say I don't mind not having to sing them on stage. At the same time these songs are a time document and let's keep them that way,

If you're a Frank Zappa fan, do not hesitate to go and look at 2000 Motels. The band does great and those small setbacks like not having a Frank Zappa baritone, are easily over won. Yes, I did really and truly enjoy myself. I even took out some of my old LPs this week.

Fool. Joe Jackson

With his previous album Joe Jackson totally took me by surprise. The album was received and just left on the shelf. Joe Jackson was from the past and I was sure he would stay there judging by most of what I had heard by him since the late 80s/early 90s. And then I put on 'Fast Forward' anyway. It turned out to be one of my favourite albums of this decade. (Read the review here: http://wonomagazine.blogspot.com/2016/01/fast-forward-joe-jackson.html.)

So for the first time in decades a new album by Joe Jackson comes with expectations. Were they met?

My first impression was direct. This is a far lighter album than its predecessor. Joe Jackson shows a little of his poppier side. The more Fool showed of itself the more that impression disappeared. Now Joe Jackson is not one inclined to write true pop. For that he seems to lack a light and exuberant side. There is always something serious lurking in the background, at a minimum. Even an 80s hit song from the 80s like 'Happy Ending' does not give the impression or even the illusion there will be one.

Digging deeper into Fool, the intricate arrangements come forward, slowly but surely. The slow lingering beauty lying within the songs unfold note by note. It is not hard to become impressed with many of the eight songs on the album. They put me in this mood where I comfort myself, dancing with myself in my mind. Especially 'Alchemy' takes me there. The soft playing, there's even a guitar solo in there, "beautiful dancers fly into the air", simply envelopes me totally. The slow notes on the piano, the short bursts of the string section. This is a special song (despite the fact that I thought Jackson was singing about a balcony...). It ends Fool in such a beautiful way. A dream of a song. When its over it is still there, within me lingering on softly.

The contrast with the beginning of the album is huge. 'Big Black Cloud' sounds as menacing as it is titled. Dark guitars, mean howls. Joe Jackson's voice is as firm as it was 41 years ago. No longer mad at the world, just at the weather(man). The song is a statement and one that works. 'Big Black Cloud' has an urgency that simply works. The music as dark as the title. It is the right song to open Fool with. Something is going on, tempting the listener to continue. The interlude is so strong the piano, the smashing drums, the menacing guitar. Oh, yeah.

Press picture: John Huba
With the second song, 'Fabulously Absolute', the early years of his career truly reappear. Direct, urgent but so much more detailed in the way it is arranged. Here shows the years of experience Joe Jackson has gained since 1978/9. 'Fabulously Absolute' is so much richer in sound, while not missing the point it wants to make. Anger and starting a career have been replaced by the knowledge of living. I reached to this conclusion and later read these words by Joe Jackson, taken only slightly out of context, when looking for information on who's playing on the album: "I couldn't have done this in 1979. I just hadn't lived enough". The band is the same as his 'Fast Forward' touring band, guitarist Teddy Kumpel, drummer Doug Yowell and, of course, bassist Graham Maby.

With 'Dave' the album dives in deeper and more or less sets the standard for Fool. Joe Jackson continues here at his best, blending his form of pop(balladry) with a layer of melancholy, storytelling, and high end musicianship. Just listen to the delicateness with which 'Strange Land' plays itself out. The fine, few notes of his piano tell all, while the other instruments move around him. Almost as if they aren't there, but would be sorely missed if the wouldn't.

With 'Friend Better' Joe Jackson does a 50% tribute. This is a classic Steely Dan song in the verses. The way the piano is played, the melody, the guitar sound, the whole feel. In the chorus Joe Jackson makes his his own song any way, with a wry advice from a wise man: "lover good, friend better".

By then it is clear that Joe Jackson is looking back on 40 years in the business but getting his inspiration from the album for which he is most loved by his fans. By doing this he has come up with his second fantastic album in the 10s. The impact will never be what he had in the early to mid 80s, but such is the way of older artists. However, when an artist at 64 can come up a fine album like Fool, and yes, I like the folky-Caribbean title song also, he has every right to feel proud.

The shows are all sold out I found. What to do?

Wo.

The Fernweh. The Fernweh
