A Blemish In The Great Light. Half Moon Run

Half Moon Run slowly crept up on me to become one of my favourite bands of the 10s. The band takes its time to release a new album but when it does it is exactly right it seems.

It may be four years since 'Sun Leads Me On', the album is not forgotten. In fact, the vinyl version regularly has a spin in my home; to the great enjoyment of Mrs. Wo'. as well. The past week it was replaced by A Blemish In The Great Light. Half Moon Run has outdone itself it seems. Undoubtedly I am cursing in church to some writing the following, but the intricate (vocal) melodies remind me of The Beach Boys, so Brian Wilson.

Half Moon Run has worked out so many fine details, found melodies within melodies and stacked them in three and four minute pop songs like it is an extremely easy thing to do. It must be something in the Montreal water I guess. This week I listened to the new Patrick Watson, this spring to the new Jesse Mac Cormack, last year to the latest Arcade Fire. All albums have what A Blemish In The Great Light also has, an abundant pop feel, while doing everything, except taking the easy way out. Of the four, Half Moon Run may sound the most down to earth, there is no mistaking the complexity in its easy sounding songs. Call it the paradox contained within Half Moon Run.

All four members, Devon Portielje, Connor Molander, Dylan Phillips and Isaac Symonds, sing and are multi-instrumentalist, giving the band endless options that are fully used. Languorous piano playing inviting contemplation, heavenly harmonising and, every once in a while, a, piano or guitar, sting to keep the wordly qualities around. Add the quality of the songs and I present you one hell of a pop band.

Promo Photo: Yani Clarke
Being three albums into its career, 'Dark Eyes' was released first in 2012 and 2013, the band has found a level of songwriting that only shows so much promise. The other fact is of course that The Beatles recording career was over in the same time span. Is that a good or a bad thing where the development of the songwriting of Half Moon Run is concerned? We will never know. The other side to that story is the sheer quality and the modest though clear urgency of this album.

With The Beatles one of the major influences of Half Moon Run is mentioned. The Canadians are not as eclectic as the Fab Four could be in their songwriting, but certainly as dedicated as James Mercer of The Shins is to his music. This band does not need to dress up like Englishmen dressing up as Arabs or pirates and can certainly do without any disco or jungle beat effects. Still it is is hopelessly romantic. A mix of melancholy sadness and bright hope for the future moves between the songs bringing the best of The Moody Blues, The Little River Band, The Shins and everything in between these bands together in the sound of this album.

The opening songs of A Blemish In The Great Light are so incredibly good that they leave me reeling. The small changes in 'Flesh And Blood' and especially when in the fourth song, 'Natural Disaster', the beautiful aahs comes in, turning the whole song around, I'm simply floored. It hardly ever comes better than this. In the second half Half Moon Run comes a little bit closer to the world yet remains so good.

Only two weeks to go and the band plays Amsterdam's Paradiso twice. Can it be this good live? It seems hard to believe.

Wo.

Florist. Emily Alone

Ghosteen. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds

Slowly but surely Nick Cave tries to disappear into his music. Listening to Ghosteen it is a matter of moments before his energy is sucked inside creating a musical black hole where no music can escape from. The only thing left to do is do a Houdini and veer off into a totally different direction. I had thought 'Skeleton Tree' would be the end of the line of this Nick Cave incarnation, but it isn't. Far from even. With Ghosteen Nick Cave has created a new level of himself. Although the album is credited to the Bad Seeds as well, there isn't much for them to do on Ghosteen.

My very first impression was 'what am I listening to'? Is there anything happening on this album'? and thoughts of that kind followed soon. It wasn't until the third listen session things started to change. Having read this is a masterpiece, made me persevere. And was I right to do so (and of course those reviewers I read were)!

My second impression was different. With Ghosteen Cave has created modern church music for the non-religious and perhaps true believers as well. The paradise like scene on the cover is too serene, yet the serenity is not desecrated on the album. The music can be meditated on. When will the first track to be heard on .No's show on Concertzender. Kairos? It must be soon. 'Sun Forest' could be the first choice I'd say.

Readers of this blog know I came late to Nick Cave. One of my dorm friends and still a good friend, had either the first or second solo album and I couldn't listen to it for a second. I can't tell whether I can now, I haven't tried since. It was only 'Push The Sky Away' that brought me on board. The LP is in my home even. With Ghosteen Cave has made another impression on me. Of course this depressing music is not for every day. At the right time, like now at time of writing, being tired from a long day and a minor lack of sleep, it is just right. The songs put me in a contemplative mood, being able to oversee it all.

Nick Cave searched for and found his higher register voice, showing a frailty that has nothing to do with his tough guy, junkie image of old. Having reached his early 60s it is almost like he is trying to make his peace with everything. I read somewhere that Ghosteen will be his last album. I can almost imagine it to be true. If it is, with Ghosteen Nick Cave has created his own 'Blackstar'. The album in which all comes together. Of course Warren Ellis, again, is instrumental in making all the sounds surrounding Cave's voice and piano, it is Nick Cave who makes a lasting impression on me.

So with Ghosteen Nick Cave has created his own cathedral. Gothic like the Medieval churches adorning city centres in many European city. Dark with shards of coloured light from the painted glass. Mystical like these places were intended to be. Religious in its seriousness and contemplation. When he sings "I am beside you, Look for me, I think my friends, Well they gathered here for me, I am within you" in 'Ghosteen Sings', it is as if he already is not amongst us any more.

Whatever the future holds, Ghosteen is an album to cherish. An album worth while to learn every note from, every word and chord. This monument may be one of the most important albums of this decade. Time will tell but I'm convinced for now it is.

Wo.

Three singles. Maggie Brown

During my summer holiday an email reached me from the singer and songwriter of one of my favourite, albeit far too obscure Dutch bands, Maggie Brown. The message being that from 20 August onwards the band would release three new songs in the coming months. Yes, three new songs by Maggie Brown and that message right after a great holiday. Life could be worse, folks!

I decided not to write on each single but wait for a while and then write on all three. That time has come. Take Time, World On Paper and Commander. I'll own up here. The first time I listened to the new songs the thought "more of the same" did cross my mind, but after I started listening some more, that thought disappeared as snow before the sun. Why?

The answer to that question is so simple. Because Marcel Hulst writes and Maggie Brown plays perfect pop songs. Just listen to how subtle and soft 'Takes Time' starts. Slowly but surely the intro builds itself up to the point where things break and the song can start. Just listen how well balanced the sound is, the sound is so clear and spine tingling. With a song like this Maggie Brown is reaching for Excelsior Record's 90s heroes like Daryll Ann and The Serenes, with one major difference: the pop feel of Maggie Brown lies so much higher. The guitar solo at the end gives Takes Time an edge I kind of like and shows another side of the band.

'World On Paper' is the second song. The acoustic guitar sets the mood first. It is a melancholy song, but then Maggie Brown is a meister at creating a mood like this. Marcel Hulst's voice is put into this world to sing songs like these. The keyboards of Friso Schmid play a lead role. The soft keyboard notes that meander through the whole. The synth solo floors me in its modesty while being spot on. Another highlight is the soft do-do-do-do's giving the song a tremendous pop feel, the kind that blends the 60s with the 90s. The sound of World On Paper also is not of today but one from somewhere in other decades. Do I like this? Yes, I do-do-do-do.

The final song released is Commander, the toughest song of the three, in as far Maggie Brown ever becomes tough of course. Drummer Pascal van Baren and bass player Thomas Dow can be noticed most in Commander. As can the intricate guitar playing of Hulst and Frank Hurkmans. The song sort of soars into my ears. A true Maggie Brown rocker. The band rocks without showing off. The drums may be solid, in the meantime the band weaves intricate vocal melodies over well-worked out arrangements, like I have come to expect. It is easy to create expectations but to fulfil them is a totally other matter, see my first, easy response to the new music. You'll have surmised from the above where I ended up with the new songs.

They were recorded with Martijn Groeneveld, producer of Blaudzun, Kensington and Klangstof. Not the lesser known bands in our country. It is too early to really comment on the producing quality, as I'm listening to MP3s on small speakers. That will have to wait until the new cd/lp comes out, hopefully not too long from now. Noticing the spaciousness of the sound, my guess is working with Groeneveld is a step in the right direction.

I simply can't tell whether there is a market for this kind of music any more. What I do know is that the people I have introduced to Maggie Brown all fell for the band with ease. So there must be. The challenge is how to reach those 40 and 50 ups and get them out of their lazy chairs to go and listen to the band and then buy the records. These three songs all, once again, prove Maggie Brown is a great band, folks. It's time to act.

Wo.

Stranger Songs. Ingrid Michaelson

Cool To Who. Walrus

Cool To Who? Well, to me for example. Walrus, a rather uncool bandname for sure, mixes a delightful kind of indie and psychedelic 60s pop rock with the kind of melodies that make my spine tingle in all the right places. Walrus is the equivalent of the soft side of Bettie Serveert after having been ironed over. More sweet than biting and still doing everything right.

Walrus is from Canada, Truro (or Halifax), Nova Scotia to be more exact. Trying to find information on the internet on the band I run into three Walrusses. One progrock band from the late 60s and one from Belgium singing Dutch pop songs. Next to links to the The Beatles song of course.

That last link isn't so far beside the point for this Walrus. (Not knowing the other two bands I can't opine on that account.) The Beatles is a band that I am reminded of often, I notice and especially the 1967 version of the band. Walrus manages to infuse a lot of psychedelic pop and inventive interludes into its music. In my book it is bestowing honour when a band deserves to have the biggest pop band ever mentioned in a review. No, Walrus is not that good, but then which band in this idiom can ever be?

Walrus gives the world an album that mixes alternative pop and rock with deep psychedelic 60s sounds. It does so in the most surprising way when the band manages to mix the best of Bettie Serveert with The Beatles in 'Ballad Of Love (Or Something)'. The two worlds meet and intertwine in a fantastic way.

The album starts in a way though that had me thinking 'do I want to continue listening here?'. Sometimes I don't but then it is an album that is 100% not in my street, so rap, dance or something like that. The rest deserves at a minimum a second chance as it I may be in the wrong frame of mind. Here I just do not like 'Breathe' a lot as it just seems to drag itself along without ever coming to life. The rest that follows all scores on my right side though.

It is the third song, 'Half Smoke', that hybrid of solidness and meandering pop, really kicks off Cool To Who for me. With that soft lingering lick played through the intro and the restart of the song somewhere half way, Walrus starts to make a real impression on me, dragging me further into the album.

Promo photo
The softer side of Walrus comes forward in 'Marcel' where Justin Murphy's voice comes closer to Billy Corgan's, and 'Out For A While'. The soft cadence of the latter song truly mesmerises me as listener. The The Velvet Underground guitar sound of the next song 'Bored To Death' brings the 60s back albeit the harsher, New York City drug addled side of the decade that is. 'Waiting For My Man' kind of rock. "Throw me of a bridge before I start to sing about it" sings Justin Murphy. Too late, lucky for us. With songs like this I would not prefer the bridge to the music, apart for crossing it that is.

It is in 'Anymore', the final song of Cool To Who, that I can't help wondering how well Walrus is familiar with Bettie Serveert's best songs. That leaves me with one remark to make. I could have sworn to be listening to a female singer for almost all of the songs in Cool To Who. Like psych colleagues The Black Angels Walrus had me fooled there.

Inferno. Robert Foster

The Blissful Joy Of Living. The Sweet Release of Death

To call The Blissful Joy Of Living beautiful would be overdoing things by a long margin. The Sweet Release of Death unleashes a kind of primordial force killing off all sensitivities that I may have left in my slowly ageing ears. What the energy the band calls forward certainly does is making me realise the joy a bit more and that I’m not going to be in search of that sweet release for a while yet, given half the chance.

The Blissful Joy Of Living is an album where there’s no room for any subtleties. Guitars are shredded, shredded louder and then some more for good measure. Whole walls of guitars, like a house totally overgrown by vines, leaving only true space for the singer's voice, like the windows that are cut open in between the vine in order to look out. Somewhere in the background there is a drummer going about his business. In fact it could be a drum machine for all I care. Listening closer, I have a hard time identifying between the two options. In the last song it is even 100%, I'd say. What is a fact, is that drummer Sven Engelsman up to a certain point can do whatever he likes. The guitars played by Martijn Tevel shred away anyway. The bass is another issue as the instrument hovers somewhere in between. Sometimes part of the rhythm, sometimes just laying down some accents which the guitars and drums do not make or finally contributing to the noise some more.

Promo photo
In ‘Sway’ I have no doubts though. This song presents the listener with an extremely effortful piece of drumming. The song is an onslaught to all senses, even those senses having nothing to do with listening. Live this will be music at ear-splitting level. An experience like I had in Amsterdam two years ago with A Place To Bury Strangers. The difference is the singing of singer Alicia Breton Ferrer and the mix of her voice in the whole. Her lyrics can, well almost, always be followed. Melody is beside the point though. This is more performance than singing. Perhaps it is near impossible to find a true melody over the noise. I have a hard time calling the music on The Blissful Joy Of Living songs. Buildings would come closer had the term been appropriate for compositions.

So in short, anyone who “lives” through the first two songs will get to the end. In a minute or 20 all six songs have played themselves out in a blistering storm of music. But pay attention now. You’ll find a surprise in the form of ‘Sick Girl’, a song that almost plays out like a “regular” indierock song.

What keeps hanging in my mind, revolving there over and over, is the impression The Blissful Joy Of Living as an angry album. Yet I truly doubt if it is. There certainly is aggression in the playing in the way the songs/buildings are attacked. This is not the same as anger though. The Sweet Release of Death does not play music from a blind rage. In fact I have the impression the six songs on the album are well thought out. The little light that is allowed into the album in ‘Sick Girl’ and a part of ‘Hey’ show just that. What remains is the sweltering heat of an intense band. The Blissful Joy of Living proves to exactly be the right frame of mind to keep the release found in the band's name at bay for a while longer. Life's too much fun with surprising albums like this.

Two Margaritas At The Fifty Five. Elizabeth The Second

For years Bongley Dead was the only punk rock band from Italy on these pages. Those days are gone from today onwards. They are joined by Elizabeth The Second from Padua. With Two Margaritas At The Fifty Five the band throws it first mini album into the world. An album filled with light sounding punkrock and 60s garage rock anthems.

Elizabeth The Second, not to be confused with the long reigning queen bent on breaking all reigning records there are to break, is a rock trio from Padua. Ben Moro sings and plays guitar, Michele Venturini plays bass and Luca Gallato drums. Only around for a little over a year, the band has obviously found its pace. Ben and Michele are old friends who played together before. After meeting Luca the threesome blended into this force, that does not hide its influences and jumps from them to create its own music. Names referenced are The Strokes, Arctic Monkeys, The Libertines, The Stone Roses. There are more you’ll find when you start listening. Anyone dropping these names deserves at least one chance and when that level is, at a minimum, met, more in-depth listening becomes an option.

I will not go as far as stating than Two Margaritas At The Fifty Five clocks in on the level of these bands’ first records. All The Strokes came up with after their 7th song on ‘Is This It’ though? , easily. That is what Elizabeth The Second does well, it captures energy and balls it into an energized song, while singing Moro sounds like he will soon be bleeding parts of his larynx for us.

‘No One Cares’ is the first song and single. A few things are noticeable straight away. The bass and drums fill up most of the sound. The guitar opens the song and the album. The sound higher than I would have expected. When it drops away for the first verse it is clear that this song is about tightness and not about playing as much as possible. There is a hint of The Living End in the music and chord progression. It is the dynamics that make up the backbone of the song. So where the music is fairly elementary, the magic is kept for the vocal melody that is allowed to swirl around the music. Together they make for an excellent first single to the album. Punkrock meets pop with a hint of rockabilly.

That high and deep sound of the rhythm guitar is a signature sound for Elizabeth The Second. An overdubbed lead guitar in ‘Mickey’ with a nice effect on it a frolic they allow themselves it almost seems. The band is good enough when keeping things basic. Here the warbly sound is nothing but a nice extra. The tougher solo later on is of the solid and necessary kind.

The playful ‘Yesterday I Was 20’ is the third song that convinces me I am listening to a good album. Mission succeeded it seems. Again the band mixes punk, with dynamics and adds some psychedelic twists in the interlude. The result is a hybrid song that has two faces, the switch back to the punkrock part is not as subtle as good have been but forgivable.

The two final songs keep up the mood in the right way and make sure that my feeling about Two Margaritas At The Fifty Five remains fully in tact. In fact the reggae rhythm of ‘Gimme One Euro’ provides the album with a nice change in listening, adding to the fun.

Italy has another fine band on my list (and don’t forget to check out Bongley Dead if you haven’t before!).

If You're Not Afraid, I'm Not Afraid. Queens of Jeans

If You're Not Afraid, I'm Not Afraid is mijn eerste kennismaking met de muziek van de uit Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, afkomstige band Queen Of Jeans.

If You're Not Afraid, I'm Not Afraid combineert diepe bassen en ruimtelijke gitaarlijnen met mooie helderde vrouwenvocalen.

If You're Not Afraid, I'm Not Afraid streelt steeds weer het oor met honingzoete melodieën, schitterend gitaarwerk en fraaie vocalen.

The Question. Anna Tivel
