And so it happens again, three short posts on one day, so as to give credit where it is due. This is the second of the three.
Edith Frost is a name I never encountered. I might have without having a recollection as near 20 years ago she released her previous album, 'It's A Game'. The pace of In Space is as fast-paced as the hiatus suggest: not at all. Edith Frost's songs are mid tempo at best. She sucks you into her world, slowly but surely. In Space is an album that is all atmosphere with several aural surprises here and there to make sure that you keep paying attention.
Take 'Nothing Comes Around'. An electric guitar or two come in, followed by bass and drums, while Edith Frost keeps singing with her dreamy voice. In other songs, the musical accompaniment is sparse and slow, with Ms. Frost's multitracked voice floating over the music.
Edith Frost is an American singer-songwriter, born in San Antonio, Texas in 1964. She is in music for decades. In her Chicago period, around 2000, she released an album on which a David Grubbs featured. He happens to have released an album on the same day, Friday 28 February, called 'Wildfires'. Coincidence is a weird thing.
In Space offers music that contains a light feel, yet with the load of a life lived on them. Edith Frost finds a delicate balance between the two, with a voice that often belies her age. It still contains the younger singer she once was. Without overdoing it, as she presents the more experienced singer successfully as well. The combination between the two makes for very pleasant listening.
