Playing in a band has an extremely attractive appeal to 20 somethings and more specifically to play in alternative rock bands. At least that is the impression I get from the number of albums that came to my ears in the past year. On the other hand, I do not know one youth personally with an attraction to making music, gaming, yes. This is at odds with the all these bands from a superficial level of looking at it.
More importantly, the quality of those albums are high as well. Bands that are not so much preoccupied with pleasing owners/shareholders of large corporations. Instead they focus on the music they want to make. The result is a diverse set of alternative bands, releasing albums that can easily compete with the best on offer in the world. New Zealand, to name an isolated country that produces a steady stream of high level alternative rock bands and albums.
Jagd is, at least for me, a new addition to the topic of choice. With Talking To Yourself To Others the band releases its debut album, but is around since 2016. The Amsterdam band around front woman Nanne van der Linden, carves itself a nice niche in alternative rock. More Hole than Talking Heads. In other words the sound is louder, yet melodic. The songs may be loud, they are songs and aim less at technical tricks like e.g. Global Charming or Price.
Don't get me wrong, the level of proficiency of playing is quite high. Jagd has taken the time to craft the ten songs it wanted to present itself to the world with. It paid off. The music is tight. Drummer Timo Mes lays down a hard-working foundation. Bass player Thom Schotanus is a force all on his own. His playing combines rhythm with melody and in distorted mode becomes like another guitar in the mix. This foundation pushes Jagd sonically in a harder rocking direction. Jos Neering can deliver his guitar parts wherever he likes as everything has already been taken care of. The punky way of singing by Van der Linden is the icing on this cake called Jagd.
Nanne van der Linden is a force. Her singing immediately draws attention. She has a few "voices" and is not afraid to use them all. The agitated or even angry woman, the more subtle harmonies and a more subdued tone of voice. They all come by and are worthwhile listening to. Jagd has a front woman to listen to alright (and plays some mean guitar parts as well).
As a whole Talking To Yourself To Others is a varied album. Yes, this is an alternative hard rocking album, but within that style a band can vary its approach and sound. Jagd manages to do this quite well, resulting in songs that are more than worthwhile to get acquainted with. From there the road lies wide open to deepen the relationship. Try it, it's worth your while alright.
Wo.
