Pentimento. Carson McHone

Running Down Pylons. N.E. Vains

Covid bands and projects. Although 2025 is nearing its end and the world has done its utmost to forget the lockdowns, as if a general amnesia fell over the planet, still records come out that found its start in the Covid lockdown period.

N.E. Vains is an American/Canadian band that started its first steps towards collaboration at that time. Jeffrey Thunders and TJ Cabot started chatting on a Facebook page and from one came the other.

The result is a punk/garage rock album where four New England musicians team up with one Canadian. Running Down Pylons is of the kind where in the first seconds the pedal is pushed to the metal, only to stop by either putting the foot off the pedal in the last second or it's stopped by a frontal crash with a thick wall. There is nothing in between here.

The sound is dirty, like the sound from a 1960s transistor radio with the tiniest of speakers. No, it isn't mono but something close to it, so dense is the mix and sound N.E. Vains produces. Yes, individual instruments can be discerned but that is about it. No time was spilled creating a great production. This is all about the energy the band's members produce together and unleash unfiltered.

Jeffrey Thunders recruited Shandy Lawn (Lead Guitar), Bill Bates (Bass) and Elvis Belushi (Drums). Together they wrote and recorded the first songs and sent the result to Canadian singer TJ Cabot (also known as Tyler Boutillier) to write vocal melodies and lyrics. The first result was a split 7" with Chinese Junk, Tragically, Bill Bates died in 2023, but the band found a replacement in Scott Finch, with whom they finished its debut album.

Where influences go, I hear a lot of Iggy Pop in the way of singing and The Stooges are not far away either. However, when N.E. Vains wants to, it writes better and more free flowing melodies that allow a hint of pop, like in 'The Grounds'. Just as easily the band rocks without mercy in 'Through Wíth It', including a mean and dirty slide guitar. This side of N.E. Vains has the up side though. Generally speaking, pop and clean are things the band's members wipe their dirty shoes with. 45 Seconds can be enough to share the message, 'My Ammunition'.

Running Down Pylons is not an album I can play in the home with the family around. It is the kind of album to play on my own. to come out totally supercharged, ready to take on the world. Running Down Pylons is that kind of album.

Call Me Silent. Ciel

Just under two years ago Ciel was on this blog with its second EP of the year 2023. Both EPs and their singles were all reviewed positively, while the comparisons with Blood Red Shoes, also from Brighton were all over the reviews. Today the, by now, duo returns with its first full length album.

Dutch singer and songwriter Michelle Hindriks and drummer Tim Spencer worked with Steven Ansill as producer. The Blood Red Shoes drummer and co-singer gave Ciel a tough sound with strong 80s overtones. The synths are all over the place, making the duo wind up somewhere between alternative rock, Depeche Mode, and, yes, Blood Red Shoes. The rock sound suits Ciel quite well. A song like 'Thinking Of You' is a dead giveaway here. It just rocks so well, that I'm allowing all these influences and more. This is Ciel in its strength and power, able to unleash it all into the ears of the fans (to be).

The album opens with an eerie sound that is overtaken by a bass and drums that set the pace of the title song and the album. The song sets the intention of the album. Fast-paced rock with a lot of melody and swaths of synths bringing the music four decades back in time. When in 'Won't Obey' influences from The Cure come in, things fall even more into place. At the same time, the vocals could never have sounded like this at the time. In this way Michelle Hindriks brings Ciel's sound into the current decade.

'Hear Me Out' is the fourth song but again a highlight on Call Me Silent. By then it's also abundantly clear that Ciel can never recreate the music on its record to a live situation, without help from live musicians that is. There's no shortage of extra's in the music and the background vocals, which are superb in this song. Simple, yet so effective these a-ha's are.

Promo photo
Call Me Silent is not only rock and roll. Alternative ballads can also be found on the record. Swaths of synths and effect ridden guitars fill the background, while the rhythm is down. The change of mood changes the feel of the album as well, but does not break its strong back. It shows the other side of Ciel. Successfully at that. 'Hold Onto You' is a superb ballad and yes, it will remind you a little of the triphop song 'Teardrop' by Massive Attack, as far as the mood is concerned.

By then it's time to pick up the pace again. Ciel does just that. You will also notice that the electronic element has replaced the dominant guitar/rock sound of the album by then, showing yet another side of Ciel. 'In Your Arms Again' is a successful example of this. And then the rock side returns. In the final song 'Cruel' it all sort of comes together. Dark synths, a softer rhythm and the rock guitars.

With Call Me Silent Ciel sets a giant step towards a secure future in alternative rock. The album may not be 100% convincing, but more than enough to make the album stand out with a promise for much more in the future. The promise of the two EPs has certainly been delivered upon.

Shish. Portugal. The Man

In 2017 'Feel It Still' became a bigger hit than anyone in and around Portugal. The Man could ever have imagined. Until that moment the band was an alternative rock band, originally from Alaska but for well over decade operating from Portland, Oregon. It had a standing of the kind that people like me with a more than average interest in indie and alternative rock had picked up the name. I did not own an album (and still do not).

That 'Feel It Still' is sort of accident, can be found on the band's latest album, Shish. The album is named after the town of Shishmaref, Alaska on an island to the north of the Bering Strait. Shish is an album as erratic as I imagine the weather to be in Shishmaref, where four seasons in one day seems a distinct possibility to me.

What Portugal. The Man presents on this album, goes in all sorts of directions. I hear attempts to follow up on 'Feel It Still', something like hardcore, alternative rock and a lot in between these three. Although Shish drives off the road with 'Pittman Ralliers' as far as I'm concerned, the rest delivers in the ways the singles that preceded the album promised. Somewhere between a dreamstate and loud, alternative rock, if not mixing the two like in 'Knik'

In the past two years all members of the band, including founding member and bassist Zach Carothers, have left the band, leaving singer and multi-instrumentalist John Gourley and his wife Zoe Manville on backing vocals as the sole members. They tour now with hired hands only. Now, it is a good question whether that would have mattered to how Shish is sounding, fact will be that Gourley no longer had to listen to anybody else. The result is an eclectic album that takes the listener up and down, left and right, inside out and back again.

It also makes Shish an album that I have to get used to. I'm hearing so much that it is impossible to keep up, while at the same time I do hear a consistent quality that keeps me on my toes for what is to come next. There's simply no predicting, certainly not in first listening session but even several times later, some songs still come as a total surprise.

That is where I'm leaving you with the album, so you can go on this adventure yourself. Just brace yourself and let yourself be carried away by Portugal. The Man. It's certainly worth it.

Comic Book Cowboy. Lera Lynn
