Opening Twitter to announce our latest post, I notice that Scott Weiland is "trending". 'That can only mean one thing', I thought and unfortunately for Mr. Weiland that proved very much true. Battling a drug addiction for decades this is the sort of outcome one can expect. It is kind of sad to die alone on a tour bus, somewhere far from home, with a needle sticking out of an arm. It gives pause to think about why a society is unable to help people who battle with a disease like this and can't help themselves. The solution is so obvious, while safer for all concerned.
I was never a fan of Stone Temple Pilots, thought that Velvet Revolver never lived up to its potential, but liked his last album which received a positive review on this blog only a few months ago. So to honour the man, I decided to run it again. Here you go.
Blaster is a record that remained on the stack for too long. I never really was a fan of Scott Weiland's first band, Stone Temple Pilots, simply to top heavy. A rendition of second generation grunge that took itself too seriously. Velvet Revolver never was as good as it could have been. With the Wildabouts Scott Weiland just rocks out. The rock riffs splash from the record. Although some of the vocal melodies are extremely recognisable, the lighter tone of the music makes them totally alright.
At the same time Blaster holds enough variation to make the album super listenable. Some classic rock and roll elements get woven into 'Beat It' riffing. The king meets the king of pop in 'Way She Moves'. Why not. There's a first time for everything.
Blaster de facto is Scott Weiland's fourth solo album that is also credited to the Wildabouts. Together the band cooks up a storm here and there. Weiland also plays guitar and keyboards, Tommy Black plays bass, Danny Thompson is the drummer (although Mike Avenaim plays drums on 4 songs), Jeremy Brown plays the other guitars. Former Smashing Pumpkins guitarist James Iha plays guitar on 'Blue Eyes'. Come to think of it, is there a grunge band left, if we forget about Pearl Jam?
Isn't there anything more concrete to write about Blaster, you may start asking yourself dear reader? A good question. I find that the answer is sort of no. The reason simply being that Blaster blasts along in a quite pleasant rocking way. Not that everything is so straight forward, several songs rock hard and have some nice sidetracking moments that make them very interesting to listen to. There is a Bowie moment in 'Youth Quake' with "Hold on" for example. There are these little moments in the bigger picture that make Blaster more than an average album. There is just not that much more that needs to be written about. Good is good enough here.
Scott Weiland & the Wildabouts have made a great rock record. It's that simple when all is added and subtracted.

Sundown Over Ghost Town. Eilen Jewell
Eilen Jewell
Sindsdien

Your Dog, Champ. Brent Best
Brent Best
uitgegroeide Everything You Thought Was Right Was Wrong Today als
onbetwist hoogtepunt.

Raglans. Raglans
This could be an extremely short review. Raglans is a band with music that puts a smile on my face. Not unlike that first ray of sun that actually makes a difference, announcing the end of winter. These lads know where they have to dip their instruments in to come up with some fine music. Whoooaaaaa's fly around in all the right places as does an additional instrument like a trumpet to underscore the fun.
Raglans make the sort of music that ranges between (Brit)pop-punk-rock not over-emphasising any of the three, thus creating a perfect match in the exact middle of the triangle, spelling one word only: party! A tip over to one corner of the triangle is compensated immediately with a tip over to one of the others. A balance is kept at all times. At the same time the negative side of Raglans is mentioned: it all is very well-levelled. No major ups nor downs. It is a downside I can live with quite easily. Just see me smiling at the moment of writing. The Irish side shines through with the addition of a mandolin to the sound, like in 'Not Now'. The ooh-oohs are all over the place and again the song has a fun vocal melody. Another straight winner.
Raglans is a band from Ireland and is around since 2011. What Stephen Kelly, Conn O' Ruanaidh, Rhos Horan and Dan O'Shaughnessy present us is their first album. In Ireland this resulted in chart success and quite rightly so. Raglans is a fun album. The band knows exactly what to do to make a whole pub shout along while swinging a pint of Guinness high up in the air. I don't doubt it also has the quality to do the same with larger venues, where other drinks are swung around in plastic containers.
Perhaps the music could have been one step more dangerous as a song like 'Fake Blood' colours between the lines very neatly. The ooooh does not compensate all here. When the Irish blood crawls where only it can go, the songs receive a Celtic flavour. 'Before Night' is a fine example of that. Listening to Raglans in general I'm getting the idea that Dropkick Murphies can punk-up some modern Irish classic for a change. Most songs of this band qualify quite nicely for this.
Raglans is an album for everyone who likes his music on the not to wild but 100% fun party side. Up beat with some nice harmony singing. If Raglans manages to step this effort up one notch in the future, it'll be irresistible.
But what is a Raglan? Apparently it has something to do with a sowing technique and sleeves and jackets. Fascinating.

Catching Currents. Fridolijn
Followers of this blog are not surprised that the current state of Dutch rock and pop is very much alright. Many records in the previous years have met with well-favoured and even much better reviews. And here comes another one. The, to me, completely unknown artist called Fridolijn, presents herself with the mini album Catching Currents. A standard album in female singer-songwriter music by a young woman who sings with a clear voice moving everywhere between Joni Mitchell, Janis Ian and the young Kate Bush.
Let me kick off the real content of this review with the comment that this soft, jazzy, laidback music is not my kind of music in general. I only started listening to Joni Mitchell this year, never got past 'Flying High' and Kate is Kate. What struck me is the clear voice of Fridolijn and the soft sound behind her that allows her to shine in a subdued way. In the fading light of a nightclub, with just a spotlight on her, from above and cigarette smoke from the audience and band floating in and out of the light. An image of the past, a past her music belongs to, while sounding clear and crisp, 2015.
Fridolijn van Pol is a Dutch singer who already has some fame in other countries through her album with the band Finn Silver that toured parts of the world after its jazzy, pop, hip-hop influenced debut album 'Crossing The Rubicon'. The band seems to have veni, vidi, vici'd, although without my knowledge, in a modest way. The result is that Catching Currents, although the debut album of Fridolijn solo, has an international release.
Catching Currents was made in London and Berlin. The record was written with Dave Austin en Danny Fisher and produced by drummer Richard Spaven. The album was finished with Jazzanova's Axel Reinemer. In as far as it is possible to say such a thing, Catching Currents has an international sound in the sense of its wide sounding production. It is as if each sound has its own small outlet in a vast wall, where the rest is closed, producing this sort of faint hum in the background of the production. A hum which is not there, merely imaginary, suggestion, making the album extremely fascinating to listen to.
This goes for all eight songs, songs that are on the verge of folk, jazz and more complex pop. The ghost of Nick Drake walks straight through the delicate 'Hold To Me'. The intricate acoustic guitar up front and the atmosphere, whatever creates it, in the background. Another name that pops up is Steeley Dan. Fridolijn manages to conjure up the same jazzy atmosphere, e.g. in 'Guards Down', without ever coming close to the arrangements. All is much more down to earth, with sparse chords and notes that are played. It is Spaven's drums that come to the foreground most with a rather complex sounding pattern that is repeated over and over.
It is the electric piano that carries the album most as an instrument. The delicate notes are laid down in the right places without becoming a true front instrument. Grant Windsor is present in a serving way, giving Catching Currents its warmth. It is in need of this as the sound in general is aloof. It is an album to listen to in a watching kind of way. It works on me, but it is me being at work drawing the music in, where usually it is the other way around for me.
With Catching Currents Fridolijn has produced an intriguing album. I am not totally certain yet where we are going together. The basis was laid though.
