I Am June. Romy Liz Rose

Start listening to I Am June and you are teleported to another world. "Beam me up, Scotty", indeed. A soft voice, multi-tracked soothes your ears while soft music calms you down. Together they create an atmosphere that allows you to wind down and just listen. Music like a soft murmuring brook in the forest. And all without making me lose interest for one second.

Romy Liz Rose is also known as Romy Laarhoven. With I Am June she delivered her debut album to the world. She created the album in her own living room and finished it in the studio with Jesse Koch. The music hovers somewhere between singer-songwriter and folk with some country elements in the form of a pedal steel guitar, that cries lonely into the night.

At the same time there is a little Fleetwood Mac in there, truly a mix of a Christine McVie and a Stevie Nicks song. As you already gathered, there is no hinting at Nicks' voice here. Not even close. This is all sad angelic singing, as slow as Romy Laarhoven wants to sing. It is a big part of the atmosphere presented on I Am June.

The album is not a bare singer-songwriter one though. You will find that songs are richly arranged. Take 'Grapefruit'. The song starts with an acoustic guitar, Laarhoven's voice and some atmospheric warbling in the background. All electronic and modern. In the verse the band comes in and several guitar parts are laid over the acoustic guitar. This includes some Gary Lucas style mesmerising parts, like e.g. on 'Mojo Pin' and 'Grace' by Jeff Buckley. 'Grapefruit' is also a slow song but so rich in sound.

In my mind, I Am June resonates well with albums coming out of New Zealand, like Aldous Harding's or Ebony Lamb's, to name two examples. Romy Liz Rose's sound is a little cleaner but just as mysterious. A sign that she and Koch did not go over one night's ice when they finished the home recordings. The sound and arrangements of I Am June are well thought out and executed.

Moving into the album it strikes me more and more how well made I Am June is and how mature the album sounds. In the bio it may state her debut album is a "a coming of age" record. The lyrics no doubt are. The sound is a mix of age old music and the modern advantages of instruments and studios. A sound to, as it were, lay yourself down on to be carried away to greener pastures. Well done and beautiful.
