The Cords are the sisters Eva and Grace Tedeschi from Glasgow. Eva plays guitar and sings, Grace is the drummer. You may hear a bass guitar here and there, played by either of the sisters and few keyboard notes, but that is it. Producers Jonny Scott and Simon Liddel have not tried to make a lot more of The Cords than can be heard on stage.
The result is an album that is as honest as it sparkles. That is the word that comes to mind foremost for me. The sisters' obviously love for 80s and 90s alternative pop shines through the whole record. From a guitar driven Bananarama to The Bangles and louder bands like The Stone Roses, you can hear it all come by somewhere on The Cords.
What the duo adds is an immeasurable level of energy and enjoying what it is the do: playing songs they like and have written themselves. I can imagine a different cover played each night to augment the show. There is more than just the songs on The Cords. A cassette and a flexi single have been released in the past, but they have passed me by, like they will have done most people.
The album though is a must listen for all people with a love for uptempo, alternative pop songs. They have an enormous level if innocence, if not naiveté. The Cords join this with a tremendous power and self-assurance. Just listen to how 'Yes, It's True' thunders into your ears. And still maintains that level of innocence, thanks to the voice of Eva Tedeschi.
In my first listening session, I was a bit overwhelmed. Isn't it a bit too much of a good thing? The answer is no. The Cords have crashed into my life and will most likely not leave it easily. This duo deserves all the attention you can give it. More words are not needed.
