Velvet Fog. The Studio Recordings. Chris and Carla

It is ten years ago that The Walkabouts has released its latest album. They were one of my absolute favourites of the 90s. Starting with 'New West Motel', a string of albums was released that were stunning in quality, until late in the decade the band slowly but surely seemed to make itself redundant. The albums became ever more bare and seemed to work towards the point that total silence would have been reached. The front duo Chris and Carla had split up by then, Chris moved to Ljubljana in Slovenia, while the rest lived in Seattle. The success in Europe diminished by the tour, so most likely it became too expansive for the Seattle, Washington based band members to come over. Somewhere in between this development, Chris and Carla toured as a duo and from there recorded as a duo as well. My favourite is a live album recorded in Thessaloniki, where they play a near impromptu gig with Greek musicians, creating a beautiful hybrid album of western and eastern Europe music. The live albums are not part of this box.

A few years ago Glitterhouse Records released a box set of studio recordings by the band. Late in 2020 it released the Chris and Carla studio albums in a box set called Velvet Fog, after one of the songs. I had missed the release at the time, making up for it today. It turned out I had missed more that just the box set with two albums that I have. There is a third album I simply did not know the existence of. The duo released an album in 2007 called 'Fly High Brave Dreamers', recorded in Ljubljana, in between of the last two The Walkabouts albums. Yes, it is possible to miss an album. Thank you Glitterhouse for putting me on to the release, because it is everything I would dream a Chris and Carla album to be. The beauty and the beast voices, the typical Americana folk songs of Chris Eckman, his rough lead guitar over the softer melodies. Most of all the quality of the songs are so alright. Where 'Life Full Of Holes', an album I love to hear, and 'Swinger 500', an album that I perhaps played twice, are more experimental, 'Fly High Brave Dreamers' could have been an excellent The Walkabouts album but is an excellent Chris and Carla album.

'Life Full Of Holes' is an album that explores what can be done with western folk songs in an exotic context. The album contains mysterious sounds and atmospheres, caught while travelling through remote parts of Morocco. Partly on the trail of Brian Jones and other Rolling Stones decades before. The album contains several beautiful songs that demand attention and perhaps even a little stamina because it doesn't travel the highway of Americana and folk but the sandy byways through the desert and mountains of the 'Sand And Gravel'.

'Swinger 500' just did not connect. More electronic sounds and distancing melodies put themselves between me and one of my favourite artists of the day. The divide simply was too broad to breach safely. Come 2021 and I'm playing 'Swinger 500' and sincerely am wondering what was wrong with my ears circa 1998. It turns out to be an album full of mysterious yet beautiful songs. In a way this box set does not give me one but two new albums, with one difference: I do remember several of the songs on 'Swinger 500', so perhaps played the album a few more times after all, but certainly not recently. The shock is more in how long ago that last time might be and the passing of time.

The more surprising is the third album that I simply missed. And yes, it contains a jazzy track like 'Rising Backwards', with a muted trumpet and an upright bass, but Carla is singing with her warm voice, so what can possibly go wrong here. "Chris and Carla at the diner", a bright spotlight and cigarette smoke does the trick.

With Velvet Fog Glitterhouse Records presents the studio efforts of the duo that deserve a nice re-release. Chris and Carla were able to experiment more as a duo and did. With a third album that perhaps financially could not be made as a band but most likely should have. It would have been fantastic. All together it makes a beautiful box set by two uniquely attuned singers, that most likely will never make music together again. That is the way things go over time more often than not, so enjoy what we do have.

Wo.

Autonomy. Stephanie Lambring

Welfare Jazz. Viagra Boys

A tough sounding name but also one that will make you be blocked by all spamfilters in the world. Swedish band Viagra Boys let not itself be deterred by a nuisance like that and went ahead, at full speed I might add. This resulted in a fine and tough album called Welfare Jazz. Not that this band has anything to do with jazz in whatever form known to the multiverse and yet the album does deserve the name; a little.

With this album Viagra Boys created a fine hybrid of Swedish alternative/garage rock as played in the past by The Hives and The Plan, to name two great proponents from Sweden in this category, the alternative 2018 postpunk Irish/U.K. scene and, yes, jazz, because of the way the saxophone honks itself through the songs on Welfare Jazz. All together it is a mix that allows for joyful singing and shouting and dancing.

Viagra Boys started in Stockholm in 2015 and releases its second full length album after 'Street Worms' from 2018 and an EP in between called 'Common Sense'. As I'm not familiar with the previous releases I'm not able to judge on progress or stagnation in the development of the band. The latter would be a major surprise going on the energy the band managed to capture on record. If the maxim that records can't half capture a live show goes in the case of Viagra Boys, then a live show must be near devastatingly exhausting. The spoken word sequences between songs, are they familiar with the former Dutch punkrock band Hausmagger?, may be there for everyone to catch their breaths.

Welfare Jazz is a dirty record. Where most bands try to capture everything as clear as possible, Viagra Boys don't mind to record as if the band is the back of a large factory hall and the mikes on the other end. Singer Sebastian Murphy's voice sounds like coming from the other end of a bad connection from the 70s, from before the Internet. It all adds to the atmosphere on the album, which certainly is fully its own. That is exactly why I will pull 'The Plan' out for the first time in years and give it a spin in my cd player soon.

The fact that Welfare Jazz shows some different sides of Viagra Boys as well, adds to the attraction of the album. A near instrumental outing, can go back to back with a more electronic based song or an alternatively rocking pop song. It makes the album far from one dimensional, as I tended to expect with a name like Viagra Boys. It's not and it makes the album more than just good. It's great fun as well and yes, sleazy in all the right ways.

A little after note. The album ends with the song 'In Spite Of Ourselves'. A second cover version of the John Prine song that reached me in a few months time, after the delightful version of Geoff Palmer and Lucy Ellis. Totally correct to give the song a new leash on life.

Carly Johnson. Carly Johnson

Neptune's Daughter. Kerri Watt

Neptune's daughter? It raises a question immediately: who is she? Now Neptune (Roman) is Poseidon (Greek), the God of the sea. Poseidon's daughter is Athena. Now there's also a movie from 1949 with Esther Williams starring, so title plus Esther Williams will equal a movie with loads of water and synchronous swimming.

That is what Kerri Watt's album title did with me. Only because the music sort of grabbed me by the lapels. The album starts with Ms. Watt in the roll of a stark rock chick with a band that is truly rocking away. 'All The Worse For Me' is tough, loud and quite unsubtle with its pounding rhythm. It sets an expectation for Neptune's Daughter that is not fully delivered upon. Reading up a little on Kerri Watt and the album this is not surprising.

Kerri Watt, from Glasgow in Scotland, usually works within the Americana range of music but on Neptune's Daughter works with rock producer Machine, a.k.a. Gene Freeman, from Texas. The result is a hybrid album, where the mood swings from tough rock to tough pop. In the album's extra's the songs are stripped to the acoustic essentials as well.

The result is some songs that I truly like and some songs that may compete with the tougher songs of Pink and Katy Perry but not with my fashion. Those songs may land occasionally, when my mood is like it. That is not that often.

Promo photo
On the other hand there's a song like 'Chasing Aeroplanes', that has it all. A great melody, fine little piano notes, a great, soulful choir and Kerri Watt who is singing in the perfect range of her voice. Here I would not discount the fine powerpop of the title song as well. These are the moments that I'm quite content that this album came by me.

In general I can state that the collaboration between Watt and Machine worked out well. Perhaps not all the songs agree fully with me, Kerri Watt is at ease in this pop-rock idiom. Her voice has the power without having to overdo it for one second. It's far from hard for her to take on this guise, if this isn't her after all. All in all, I'm giving Neptune's Daughter the benefit of the doubt.

This album was ready in 2018. Whatever took it this long to release, I can't tell. It's here. Enjoy it!
