Darkness Brings The Wonders Home. Smoke Fairies

Bill Withers, 1941 - 2020

It is already more than a week that Bill Withers died. I had intended to write sooner, but things and other music got in the way. As far as I'm aware Withers' death was not Corona related, but from heart failure.

When I read about his death, I realised that I know nothing of the man and that I know only three of his songs, one of them covered by someone else, 'Lean On Me', although I can't for the life of me remember by home. Another song also covered by Michael Jackson, when he was an early teen. That version is of course totally eclipsed by Bill Withers' original. The third I know best because of the remix made around 1988, 'Lovely Day'. That is all.

Coincidence has it, that I heard 'Ain't No Sunshine' and the original 'Lovely Day' in the week before he died on the radio. Now we are all contained in our homes, my girlfriend is at home much more often, meaning that the radio is on a lot more. She is very content with what a program manager presents her with, while I'm always playing my own choices and new music for this blog. An enormous difference in passive music consumption. There is a third category: songs we play in the band we are both a member of, Sweetwood. Now that is upended as well, we play a front garden show each Saturday afternoon for our neighbours in their gardens, on their balconies, in the doors or social distancing by car lenght in the street. As we try out new things every week, a lot of songs come by on repeat to learn to sing and in my case, play them on acoustic guitar. 'Ain't No Sunshine' is one of the songs we our contemplating for the coming weeks as a tribute.

That brings me back to Bill Withers and coincidence. When I heard the songs, fairly close together, let's say one a day, I was reminded to the fact that I had never heard anything else by the man. My impulse is still not to go to Spotify but to buy a chance second hand album for a few Euro's and bring it home. As that may be a while and can't remember ever chancing upon a Bill Withers album second hand, I'm going to Spotify right now and turn on Withers' first album ... 'Just As I Am' from 1971.

Spotify ranks the first five most listened to songs from all artists. The three songs I mentioned at the top are his top three. Ranking in the 200 and 100 millions clicks. Bill Withers is one of the artists who have made a little money for his pension from Spotify. That's a nice thought.

A few days after I had this thought, and forgetting about it just as fast, I have to admit, the news reached me Bill Withers had died at the age of 79. Not old, certainly not young, but forever with us. Three songs millions upon millions of people know, old and young. Three songs that never cease to impress me. Although the sanity of a man whose total happiness depends on the presence of one woman needs to be feared for, not to mention the burden placed on her, with it Bill Withers wrote one of the most beautiful, if desperate love songs.

In the meantime I'm listening to a jazzy soul song 'Grandma's Hands'. It may well be that I will like more by Bill Withers soon. And, I had totally forgotten he was the singer of Grover Washington's hit single 'Just The Two Of Us'. A nice legacy to have.

Miss Anthropocene. Grimes

Chemical Reaction. Beth Wimmer

Little did I know that the chance show I saw of Beth Wimmer at the Q-Bus in Leiden in the spring of 2012 would lead to a longer lasting relation with us emailing fairly regularly and even to a show in our living room in 2017.

Come 2020 and Beth returns on these pages with a new album. To record it she returned to her friend Billy Watts and his band the Mojo Monkeys. The 2017 album 'Bookmark' was an artistic triumph, setting the standard fairly high for Chemical Reaction.

Fans can be rest assured, Beth and her backing band deliver the whole of the way. For those expecting a woman and her guitar, like at live shows, could be disappointed, as there is a full backing band accompanying Beth. This is a professional album in sound and all else.

Things Beth Wimmer begin with her full, warm voice. She is able to envelope her listeners with the warmth of that voice. She sings, giving the listeners her full attention and easily gives the impression she is singing only for you. She actively shares happiness, contemplation and introspection through her voice. I simply love listening to her sing as it changes everything in and around me a little instantly.

Next to that she is able to write songs that make a difference as well. The genre is singer-songwriter and Americana that is spruced up by the Mojo Monkeys. This makes her music a lot tougher than when she plays on her own (of course). Especially in the more rocking songs. Just as easily she switches to a delicate song or a song with a more Caribbean flavour. Her voice carries them over just as convincingly. The band follows her with ease, making Beth and her songs grow and glow.

The American artist but for years a Swiss resident works primarily with the Los Angeles based Mojo Monkeys on this album but guest appearances from Swiss musicians on instruments like keyboards and viola are present as well. What stands out immediately is the clear sound. This is a neat production that underscores the songs and Beth Wimmer's voice in all the right ways. The music makes her shine. The nice and clear sounding drums, a soft bass playing elementary but soothing notes, allow for Billy Watts to excel on guitar. He easily plays many different styles built through the years as a studio and live musician for various artists. I remember many-a story being told by him at our dinner table in 2017.

Chemical Reaction is an album that from the first notes makes me believe it is going to be a sunny day. The day may disappoint after all, Chemical Reaction does not. Around me that sun holds up with ease. While writing this line, a new song starts and Beth sings "Now I really need some sunshine"; coincidences do not exist folks. The song is called 'Cold Rain'. The moment you start playing the song, the 'Cold Rain' remains firmly locked out. It is another example of the beautiful, graceful accompaniment of Beth's songs on this album. It all just fits so beautifully.

All artists have a rough time with not being able to perform. Releasing a new album takes a lot of investment, not only in writing but in recording, hiring musicians, pressing cds, and a lot more. So take my word, folks, this is a beautiful album. Support this Swiss-American singer-songwriter and order her cd below. You won't be disappointed.

Amputate Corporate Art. The K.

The K. is not your average band name. It has something Kafkaësque because of the lone K. The music is much more direct. Big fat (stoner)rock with smears of alternative rock like Canshaker Pi, the absolute frontrunner of this genre in The Netherlands.

The opening song, such a cheerful title in these surreal days of Corona, 'The Future Is Bright' is a very direct rock song with heavy riffing on powerchords. It's nice, but to my ears the band becomes truly interesting with the second song, 'Shit Day'. Singer Seb sounds like a madman spinning totally out of control. His vocal chords lie bleeding on the studio floor, seriously wondering how to ever reproduce this successfully on stage multiple times. Respite thanks to Corona. 'Shit Day' is a great, dark song. The band name Canshaker Pi has already been mentioned. This is classic Canshaker Pi and successfully so. The band can adopt the song easily, if they ever come back together that is.

Amputate Corporate Art continues in this exciting vein. Despite working on the heavy side of alternative rock, the band does not forget the melodies, while allowing for some breathing space in the music as well.

The K. is a trio van Liège in north-eastern Belgium, a classic rock trio of guitars-bass-drums. This is the band's third album, but first after 4 and a half years. There's a new bass player with the nice name of Danger Mertz. The two original members Seb von Landau and Siegfried Burroughs are responsible for the lyrics. Most songs are credited to the whole band, but four credited to drummer Burroughs. It's not every day the drummer comes up with songs in a band. It includes 'Shit Day', which is my favourite actually.

Promo photo: Michael Roemers
'Keep My Nightmares Cold' is a good example of the quality The K. possesses in arranging its songs. Subtlety is not the first word that comes to mind while listening, and yet. There is this dreamy passage where the guitar is moved to the background and the song opens itself up. Instant satisfaction for the listener, making the whole song so much more interesting. The light and the shade as I remember Tommy Iommi of Black Sabbath calling it. The K. certainly knows the secrets of his work, used successfully over time by The Police, Nirvana and many others since.

All through Amputate Corporate Art (why?, I ask) The K. rocks out. Sometimes as hard as it can, like in 'Swim It Better' and yet again, air is let in, making the song so nice to listen to. Madness comes tumbling in in the final song '(Un)fortunate Youth'. Hints of System of a Down and The Fudge enter the whole. The K. makes it its own easily.

Summing up, Amputate Corporate Rock is a nice alternative rock record with all sorts of influences woven into its sound. Live it may be an eardrum blistering experience.
