Evermore. Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift maakte, echt totaal onverwacht, met Folkore een van de allerbeste albums van 2020 en doet er met het al even plotseling verschenen Evermore gewoon nog een schepje bovenop.

Taylor Swift was voor mij nooit veel meer dan een “guilty pleasure”, tot afgelopen zomer Folkore verscheen. Folklore is een singer-songwriter album van een ontzettend hoog niveau en duikt dan ook niet voor niets op in heel veel jaarlijstjes. In deze inmiddels verschenen jaarlijstjes is natuurlijk geen plek voor het al even plotseling verschenen Evermore, maar na flink wat keren horen sla ik het tweede 2020 album van Taylor Swift misschien nog wel hoger aan. Evermore is in productioneel, muzikaal en vocaal opzicht een geweldig album en het is ook nog een album met songs die je vanaf de eerste keer horen voorgoed wilt koesteren. Taylor Swift was misschien een “guilty pleasure”, maar wat ben ik onder de indruk van Folklore en het misschien nog wel betere Evermore.

Dat Taylor Swift twee gezichten heeft wisten we al een aantal jaren. De Amerikaanse muzikante debuteerde ooit als countryzangeres, maar transformeerde na een paar succesvolle jaren moeiteloos in een nog veel succesvollere popprinses. In de zomer van dit jaar kwam er nog een derde gezicht bij, want gedurende de Amerikaanse corona lockdown stampte Taylor Swift samen met onder andere The National voorman Aaron Dessner een prachtig album uit de grond. 

Het uitvoerig geprezen Folklore duikt deze weken hoog op in nogal wat jaarlijstjes en daar valt echt helemaal niets op af te dingen. Folklore kwam deze zomer uit het niets en kreeg deze week, wederom uit het niets, gezelschap van een nieuw album, Evermore. 

Ook voor Evermore (officieel gespeld zonder hoofdletters, maar daar slaat mijn grammaticacontrole van op hol) deed Taylor Swift weer een beroep op Aaron Dessner en ook Justin Vernon (aka Bon Iver) en topproducer Jack Antonoff zijn wederom van de partij. Aaron Dessner trommelde voor een van de tracks op het album The National op, terwijl in andere tracks Bon Iver en het trio HAIM zijn te horen. 

In muzikaal opzicht ligt Evermore in het verlengde van Folklore. Voor Taylor Swift begrippen zijn zowel de instrumentatie als de productie ook dit keer betrekkelijk sober te noemen. Beiden zijn bovendien zeer smaakvol en schuwen het avontuur niet. Het zijn verder ook dit keer de details die er toe doen, met een speciale vermelding voor het bijzonder fraaie gitaarwerk op het album. 

Ook de zang op Evermore is vergelijkbaar met die op Folklore. Het is zang zonder opsmuk en het is zang die laat horen dat Taylor Swift een geweldige zangeres is, wat onder de wat schreeuwerige producties van haar popalbums wel eens ondersneeuwde. 

Toen het nieuwe album van Taylor Swift 24 uur voor de release werd aangekondigd, kon ik me niet voorstellen dat Evermore zou kunnen tippen aan het geweldige Folkore, maar nu het nieuwe album voor de zoveelste keer voorbij komt, denk ik dat Taylor Swift het toch geflikt heeft. 

Evermore is in alle opzichten een fantastisch album. De instrumentatie en productie zijn prachtig en strelen het oor en prikkelen de fantasie een uur lang uitvoerig. Taylor Swift zingt prachtig en heeft een serie geweldige songs geschreven, die ook in tekstueel opzicht interessant zijn. 

Voor mij geldt persoonlijk dat hoe ingetogener de songs van Taylor Swift zijn hoe mooier (het wonderschone Champagne Problems is voor mij een van de hoogtepunten op het album en er staan meer songs op het album die worden gedragen door piano en zang), maar ook de wat voller ingekleurde en geproduceerde songs zijn stuk voor stuk kunststukjes. 

Taylor Swift is als countryzangeres en als popprinses met de nodige scepsis ontvangen, maar de twee albums die de Amerikaanse singer-songwriter dit jaar heeft afgeleverd hebben zelfs haar grootste critici tot zwijgen gebracht en dat ondanks het feit dat ze de toegankelijke pop zeker niet helemaal heeft afgezworen op Folklore en Evermore. 

De corona pandemie heeft het afgelopen jaar gezorgd voor heel veel ellende, maar het heeft Taylor Swift geïnspireerd tot twee fantastische albums, waarvan Evermore op dit moment mijn favoriet is. Iedereen die een jaar geleden had beweerd dat Taylor Swift in 2021 met twee albums hoog in mijn jaarlijstje zou eindigen had ik zonder enige twijfel voor gek verklaard, maar het gaat absoluut gebeuren.

By The Fire. Thurston Moore

Thurston Moore levert wederom een geweldig soloalbum af en het is er heen met flarden van behoorlijk toegankelijke rocksongs, maar vooral heel veel fenomenaal gitaarwerk.

Sinds het uit elkaar vallen van Sonic Youth timmert Thurston Moore stevig aan de weg met soloalbums. Hij maakte een tweetal behoorlijk toegankelijke albums en een hele experimentele. By The Fire kan beide kanten op. Thurston Moore begint op zijn nieuwe album met enige regelmaat aan lekker in het gehoor liggende rocksongs, maar hij blijft natuurlijk ook een geweldig gitarist die het experiment niet schuwt. Met name de langere tracks op het bijna anderhalf uur durende album grossieren in fenomenaal gitaarwerk dat varieert van subtiel tot stevig. Het zorgt ervoor dat ook By The Fire weer een geweldig album is dat de aandacht verrassend makkelijk anderhalf uur vasthoudt.

Thurston Moore kennen we natuurlijk vooral van zijn band Sonic Youth, waarmee de Amerikaanse muzikant tussen 1982 en 2009 een enorme stapel geweldige albums maakte. In 2011 kwam er een einde aan het huwelijk tussen Thurston Moore en medebandlid Kim Gordon en viel helaas ook het doek voor Sonic Youth; een Rumours van de Amerikaanse noiserock band zat er helaas niet in. 

Thurston Moore zat gelukkig niet bij de pakken neer, maar ging verder met het maken van soloalbums, waarvan hij er al een aantal op zijn naam had staan. Nu waren die soloalbums sinds het uitstekende Psychic Hearts uit 1995 vooral erg wisselvallig, maar het in 2014 uitgebrachte The Best Day bleek van een hoog niveau en herinnerde aan de beste dagen van Sonic Youth, iets wat overigens ook gold voor het in 2017 verschenen Rock N Roll Consciousness, dat nog wat toegankelijker was. 

Vorig jaar kwam Thurston Moore op de proppen met Spirit Counsil en dit bleek veel zwaardere kost. Het instrumentale album bevatte slechts drie tracks, maar voor deze drie tracks had Thurston Moore maar liefst tweeënhalf uur de tijd nodig. Spirit Counsil is, als je er voor in de stemming bent, een interessant album, maar zelf prefereer ik toch de Thurston Moore songs met een kop en een staart. 

Op het deze week verschenen By The Fire zijn deze songs met een kop en een staart weer te vinden. Ook dit keer neemt Thurston Moore ruim de tijd voor zijn muziek, want By The Fire duurt bijna anderhalf uur, terwijl de lengte van de negen tracks op het album varieert van bijna 5 tot bijna 17 minuten. 

Thurston Moore wordt op By The Fire bijgestaan door voormalig My Bloody Valentine bassiste Deb Cooge, gitarist James Sedwards (Nought), de uit de hoek van de experimentele elektronica bekende Jon Leidecker en drummers Steve Shelley (Sonic Youth) en Jem Doulton. Zeker in de eerste tracks op het album laat Thurston Moore een opvallend toegankelijk geluid horen en By The Fire valt bovendien op door een hecht bandgeluid. 

By The Fire opent met twee lekker in het gehoor liggende rocksongs vol geweldig gitaarwerk, maar ook aansprekende zang. Het is het gitaarwerk dat we van Thurston Moore kennen en het kleurt de eerste tracks van het album prachtig in en veelzijdig in. Het herinnert absoluut aan het werk van Sonic Youth, maar het sluit ook naadloos aan op de vorige soloalbums van Thurston Moore. 

Zeker door het geweldige gitaarwerk zijn de songs van Thurston Moore veel interessanter dan doorsnee rocksongs en omdat de Amerikaanse muzikant de tijd neemt voor zijn songs valt er veel te genieten van dit gitaarwerk, dat werkelijk alle kanten opschiet en varieert van subtiele gitaarloopjes en angstaanjagend hoge gitaarmuren tot experimenteler werk. 

Zeker in de langere tracks op het album verliest Thurston Moore de rocksong met een kop en een staart wel eens uit het oog, maar het fenomenale gitaarwerk houdt de aandacht moeiteloos vast en wanneer de gitaren zijn uitgeraasd weet Thurston Moore de wat toegankelijkere songstructuren vaak toch weer verrassend snel te vinden, waardoor By The Fire zich ondanks het experiment makkelijk opdringt. 

Sonic Youth opereerde vaak binnen een vast stramien, maar op By The Fire gaat Thurston Moore helemaal los en sleept hij er een breed palet aan invloeden bij. Het slaat af en toe behoorlijk door richting experiment, maar het is experiment met muzikaal vuurwerk om je vingers bij af te likken. By The Fire vraagt nog wel wat tijd om alle geheimen te ontrafelen, maar dat Thurston Moore een geweldig album heeft afgeleverd is voor mij al lang zeker.

The best read posts on WoNoBlog ever, 2012 - 2020

Once again we present the most clicked on posts of now nearly 9 years of blogging. The bot caveat of course is still in place, which I will not repeat here. Fact is, there is some movement in the list and despite the fact that all listings with the year 2019 behind them fall under the bot clicking, in 2020 there have been some changes that have nothing to do with the bots, as they are mostly gone. Interesting to see how numbers of some posts have risen and even led to surpassing others that were in the list last year. So a little revenge on the bots, with thanks to you!

With this post, we close 2020 on the blog. A year that impressed me in several ways. One of them for sure musically as I have got to know so many albums that truly had a significant impact on me. It is also nice to learn that despite my slowly but surely advancing age, new music can still impress me, lift me up and entertain me totally.

Wo.'s top 30 albums of 2020, Part 1

Yesterday I introduced the numbers 30 to 11 to you, with some talk about other albums. Today I present the numbers 10 to 1 to you. But first I'd like to focus on a few individual songs that really stood out.

To start, I'm introducing you to the Glasgow band Garlands. It hasn't released a full-size album yet. This year, over the summer Garlands released one song per month. Each one was special. Each one had a great chunk of pop in its alternative rock. All songs to sing along to that the world should be doing by now. Hence my attention to Garlands.

Bob Dylan dropped a 17 minute song 'Murder Most Foul' in spring. Nothing happens in it and no, I will not listen to it often, but it is so impressive. When I put it on, the old bard puts me under his spell and does not let me go until the final second.

On 18 December Aura Blaze released a new song with one of those titles that make we wonder what can it mean?, 'Trans-Dimensional Palm Tree'. Decades of influences come together in the song. In 7 and a half minute Rhode Rachel shows us the universe, hiccups and all. Everything you hear is Rachel playing and singing on his own.

As already mentioned yesterday, the world saw a new The Rolling Stones single and three old/new songs. That makes it four of five new songs in one and a half decade. That new album is still eluding us. The four news ones have made me quite content to be honest. All four made me remember why I like the band so much. Perhaps I have stopped playing its records regularly, the love has not gone away.

Of course there were a few songs that really stood out. The opening song of 'Every Bad', Porridge Radio's latest album, is 'Born Confused'. That song really, really got to me. It was like hearing 'Jacqueline', the opening song to 'Franz Ferdinand' or '(I Bet You Look Good On The) Dance Floor', the first Arctic Monkeys song I heard or 'Maestro' or Kaizers Orchestra for the first time. The same is true for 'I Am', the opening song on 'Black Foxxes' by the band of the same name. What a musical blast! Just like the first Wax Chattles song I heard, 'No Ties'. That sort of impact can still be achieved at a later age. It is a matter of opening yourself to new experiences. And then there's 'I'm Not Getting Excited' by The Beths topping them all. And all in one year!

Another well-deserved mention is for the string of singles Rum Bar Records released in 2020. A whole album by some of the singers and bands all at once may be a bit too much of a good thing for me, the singles are of the sort that can compete with the best of the past. The Hi End, Natalie Sweet, Freddie Dilevi, Muck and the Mires, etc., etc. You can find them all in the singles posts of 2020.

Enough said, let's proceed to countdown towards number 1.

10.  Shade Is On The Other Side. GIRL SKIN

Another album that without Erwin Zijleman I would never have gotten to know. The band thanks The Beatles in the liner notes and rightly so. Hardly a second goes by without me thinking about that band when listening and still this band is totally itself. A beautiful album, with beautiful songs and beautiful singing.

9. The All Is One. Motorpsycho

Another band with a subscription to the top 10 in the past few years. Another great album that shows all the sides of the experimental prog and sympho rockers from Trondheim. Full suits are played, West Coast pastiches and what not. On the four sides Motorpsycho showcases all its strengths. An extra point goes to the artwork as well.

8. Halluzinationen. Sophie Hunger

Living in Berlin now, Hunger comes with a new album that is a nice mix of her previous three albums. The combination works really well, presenting a strong set of songs in different styles that fit Ms. Hunger really well.

7. Reb Fountain. Reb Fountain

Close to a revelation Reb Fountain's album is. The power of her voice does not need anything else than a soft song, delicately played and sung. She dominates the whole in a splendid way. I simply love listening to 'Reb Fountain'.

6. Jump Rope Gazers. The Beths

Another album from New Zealand. The third in this list. Alternative rock like I like it played. Full of memorable melodies, great, surprising solo's and real songs. Jump Rope Gazers holds it all.

5. Hoogriet. De Kift

En natuurlijk staat De Kift in lijst. Met Hoogriet weet de band na 32 jaar zijn eigen lat nog hoger te leggen. Nog betere liedjes, nog betere harmonieën vokaal en muzikaal. Dit is zeer waarschijnlijk het beste De Kift album tot op heden.

4. Tragas O Escupes. Jarabe de Palo

All of a sudden after years of silence, there was a new album. It also turned out to be a swan song. Singer Pau Donés was terminally ill and died this spring. It is a goodbye to be proud of. Everything that made Jarabe de Palo a unique band comes together for a final time. Thank you for the music Pau Donés and band members over the years. It was a great trip, that started in an old factory gone disco in Salamanca 1997.

3. Mediocre, Brutal. Global Charming

What a debut. This album holds so much. Nearly every song holds some kind of twist, something strange, unexpected. It may sound odd but it always fits perfectly. In a way a time machine to the early 80s and yet totally 2020. A deep bow.

2. Everything Bad. Porridge Radio

With an impressive song like 'Born Confused' starting Everything Bad, what can go wrong with an album? Nothing. It isn't even the best song on the album. Everything Bad is really impressive and the starting point of a breakthrough in my opinion.

1. Rough And Rowdy Ways. Bob Dylan

And so a 79 year old, croaky bard defeats them all. With his latest album Bob Dylan surprised me fully, completely as I had not seen this impact coming in any way. No, more the opposite as I had basically lost my interest over the past two decades. And then Rough And Rowdy Ways is released. What can I say? A fabulous album by one of the greatest icons of folk and rock.

Wo.'s top 30 albums of 2020, part 2

HAPPY NEW YEAR, dear WoNo readers!

 

By the time 2020 was half way, it was clear to me that 2020 was getting to be an exceptional year in pop and rock. Late June I was worrying already what albums I would have to drop to get to a top 10. I decided to cheat. As all live shows were cancelled from mid-March onwards, I decided to use the space to expand my top 10. First to a top 20, then a top 25 and finally a top 30. All these albums deserve a mention and I have been extremely strict as well. There simply is so much more. Before I start the countdown, a few mentions, as you will find spread out over two days.

First three albums that saw a re-release. The 4CD box of the U.K. psychedelic folk band Trees is exceptional. Like, extremely likely, most people in the world, I had never heard of the band and was mildly blown away by what I heard. As I write the cd box is on its way to me. I am really looking forward to establish a real relationship with the music of Trees.

Secondly, The Rolling Stones not only released a surprise single, 'Living In A Ghosttown', though not of exceptional quality still shows that the band can deliver a good and relevant song, no, there was the release of 'Goat's Head Soup'. Thanks to that release I now know and can regularly play the three "new" tracks. Whatever the story behind 'Scarlet' really is and if it could/should have been on this album, whether Jagger sang it at the time or not, I'm so glad to have it. Because of the three songs I bought the album and truly underwent a true reappraisal of it. Not to speak of the alternative, bluesified version of 'Hide Your Love'. Once my second Stones album, now my latest as well.

Thirdly, there's the re-release of 'Benjamin B.', the debut cassette of the band with the same name. Alternative rock from the 90s that could have been made today. There's so much energy on the album, that it ought to lead to a major breakthrough of the band 25 years too late.

Also, I like to draw your attention to three EPs that are so good. First, Fridolijn's Chapter One and Two maxi singles, that show an extremely interesting and mysterious side to her artistic music. I hope it will all lead to a beautiful CD in 2021. Second, I Am A Rocketship's 'oRanGe'. One of the many lockdown releases that are very surprising. The band rocks, is angry and it shows in a positive way.

I also have to own up on something. On my longlist there were several albums by young female singers. Albums that I even bought and have played a lot. E.g., 'Red' by Polly Scattergood, 'Sorceress' by Jess Williamson, 'World Of Wonder', Sarah Jarosz or 'A Temporary Soothing' by Siv Jakobsen. They all did not make it to this list and I sincerely wondered why. Not that you will not find female lead artists or a band fronted by women in this list. Far from it, perhaps even more than ever before. No, it is mainly about female singer-songwriters that did not make the cut. As I already wrote I truly like the albums but when it really gets down to it, I like some more substance to the music, as in loud guitars. That is the conclusion where I arrived at and can offer you.

There's one question mark in this list. McCartney III was only released on 18 December. I have no idea where the album would have wound up had it been released a few weeks earlier. It really, profoundly surprised me. Not unlike Dylan's latest album. I will not be surprised when 'McCartney III' will grow in my appreciation soon. To be certain it is in this list.

Finally, who is number 31? That unpleasant honour goes to Muck and The Mires' 'Greetings From Muckingham Palace'. The album is not only a lot of fun, it is good as well. It's only that number 30 is more impressive that the album is stuck just outside of my 2020 list.

Let's start the countdown.

30. Good Souls Better Angels. Lucinda Williams

This album is my return to Ms. Williams. She really hits it hard here and does not hold back in any way. This is a tough album by a tough lady. Perhaps even her best to date.

29. Daytrip To The Petting Zoo. Barely Autumn

The first Belgian band in this list. With the album Barely Autumn rocks out nicely without colouring too far outside of the lines. Singing along is not required but always an option. Even about an abortion.

28. Starlight. Templo Diez

An Amsterdam based band with a global outlook. The dark-toned music is inspired by the south western U.S. desert and Mark Lanegan is never far away. The music is of the kind to watch the stars to.

27. Holding On To Let Go. Sophia

Sophia returns with a great album that rocks and holds back in all the right moments. In my opinion the best the band released to date.

26. To Live Is To Love. Jehnny Beth

On her first solo album Jehnny Beth gives it her all and that is a lot. She shows all sides of her self, even a 3d print on the cover of the album. It paid off. This is an impressive album.

25. Timesaver. Price

Alternative rock and The Netherlands is a great combination in 2020. Price produces a surprising and varied album that deserves to be heard far across our borders.

24. Whoosh. Deep Purple

Surprises do exist. In the first Deep Purple album I heard after 1976's 'Come Taste The Band', the band truly impressed me with a fine collection of classic rock songs for 2020.

23. 925. Sorry

One of the first albums that impressed me in 2020. The debut of this U.K. band is one that I still listen to. Blood Red Shoes and The xx go together well here. There is one alternative U.K. band that is a lot better though this year.

22. Even In Exile. James Dean Bradfield

Another surprise in 2020. I almost decided to put the cd aside without listening. I had heard enough Manic Street Preachers for one lifetime. Bradfield presented a fantastic album though. True in the second half I have heard enough. But the first 5 to 6 songs are immaculate and deserving of a listing here.

21. Things That Don't Go Right. School Is Cool

A second Belgian album from the first months of this year. School Is Cool combines alternative rock with some great melodies and inventive rhythms. I played the album a lot in the first half of the year.

20. Dawn Of The Death. Dawn of the Deaf

Tie up your (grand) parents because if they have not gone deaf yet, they will after going to a show by this band. Ms Georgia Peach and her men really rock out in ways that are seldom heard any more these days. This is excitement, folks!

19. Liefde Is De Eerste Wet. Broeder Dieleman

Broeder Dieleman heeft een abonnement op een eindlijst op dit blog, dus ook zijn meer liedjes georiënteerde plaat Liefde Is De Eerste Wet. Zoveel liedjes met prachtige, subtiele instrumentatie en memorabele refreinen. Terechte notitie dus.

18. Careful Climbing. Slow Worries

Again a debut album by a Dutch alternative rock band. Slow Worries combines its form of rock with some golden melodies and tough playing. Another band that ought to become known far beyond the Hook of Holland, Nieuweschans and Maastricht.

17. Okay Decay. Canshaker Pi

And so I was present at the final show of the flagship of new Dutch alternative rockbands. With its third and final album Canshaker Pi said goodbye to the masses in a great way. It shows all the band was capable of in a grandiose way. Quite the goodbye.

16. Serpentine Prison. Matt Berninger

His band The National is largely missing in my record collection. This solo album with a great role for senior musician Booker T. Jones, however is beautiful and full of class.

15. Clot. Wax Chattels

Clot may be the most radical album that I have in my collection. This New Zealand band band does not hold back on anything, while making a deep impression every single second the album lasts. Yes, there's melody but many will have scooted before it arrives.

14. Fantasize Your Ghost. Ohmme

Fantasize everything and, why not, a ghost, I'd say. With it's album, Ohmme captured me immediately. Varied, different and fairly unique in sound and songs, Fantasize Your Ghost works on all fronts.

13. McCartney III. Paul McCartney

As written above, I have no idea where the album will truly end up, but after the few listening sessions so far, this spot is totally deserved. McCartney III is inspired and rough. I haven't heard Sir Paul this good on record for decades.

12. Black Foxxes. Black Foxxes
