Ondeugend en opstandig. Sophie Hunger live in Tivoli/Vredenburg, Utrecht 6-12-2015

Photo: Wo.

Jesse Mac Cormack live. Tivoli Vredenburg, 6-12-2015

Photo: Wo.
My first show in attendance in the new Tivoli/Vredenburg venue in Utrecht since its opening. I had seen the impressive building from the outside, but nothing prepared me for the also impressive journey inside the building. Three flights of elevators? And then some stair climbing that left some in the group quite out of breath. 'Cloud Nine' is not called Cloud Nine for nothing. Only true stars can play this venue that is expanded way up high in the building. The losses of unused spaces in this building are enormous.

After shedding our coats somewhere halfway up and climbing the stairs, we were all of a sudden at our place of arrival, chattering amiably. We walked into the room, there was some music playing. It took me a few seconds to realise that the support act had already started. I noticed because a near sacred atmosphere fell over me, hushing me up. An unkempt young man was sitting on a piano coach, crouched over his guitar as if it was about to disappear or change into something else if he didn't keep a very close watch over it. There was a total silence except for the estranging music and singing. Drinks were ordered like a conversation in church, totally muted.

Two songs were played that way, before Mac Cormack announced that he was going to do something new. That is, stand up and play. The songs were more aggressive, but that did not change his approach to his music. It seems like he tried to make everything as ugly as possible. His presentation aside, most notes were played muted, dissonant notes were flying around my ears, hideous chords played and the hushed, subdued singing accompanied that. We were about to find out what else he could conjure up from his acoustic guitar. A lot.

Photo: Wo.
And you know what the strange thing was? No matter how ugly Jesse Mac Cormack tried to make his music, he put a smile on my face every once in a while. I wasn't laughing at him. Far from, I think I got what he was trying to achieve. Shoot straight through all conventions and expectations of people and still reach for the soul of his listeners. The fact that the usual hubbub didn't start, meant that either he got to the people in attendance or that the venue is small enough for people to just shut up and listen no matter what. Anonymity not possible.

I am not convinced just from this one show. Listening to the some clips on You Tube, I am a bit more. One of the only things Jesse communicated, was that he had flown all the way from Montreal to meet us. I am glad I caught the earlier train and was on time to listen to him play.

The show got this little extra when Mac Cormack harmonised with himself and started to sample his singing and playing, creating all these layers in his song. One after the other, building his own cathedral in song. When the song ended with Jesse on his knees fiddling with all the knobs on his effect pedals, I was reminded of the lead guitarist in my first band, who kept twiddling on his knees, at ear-splitting level and did not notice that we had all stopped playing, covering our ears. Not for the first time. That was the moment we decided it was time to move on without him. Jesse knew when to stop and vacate the podium for Sophie Hunger, having made an impression that will make me go back to his music. Who knows we may even have a review soon?

House and Home EP. Arlo Hannigan

Every once in a while I run into that moment that winding down becomes a serious option. Music certainly helps. An EP I received recently is one of those little wondermakers that begs listening and does not allow anything else. It is this simple, if I do not pay attention to House and Home it is over before I know it or ever realised that it was on. Arlo Hannigan provides the soundtrack for a late evening listening session.

What makes his EP so attractive is that nothing much is going on. He sings not unlike the younger Leonard Cohen. More like a whisper in the lower register of his voice mixed over the music that is just as subdued. If he is still be performing 50 years from now he will sound like the old Cohen sing-talking himself through his songs. J.J. Cale is another name that comes to mind in the singing.

Arlo Hannigan in an Alaskan residing in Los Angeles and has one record to his name, 'Come Up The Hill' (2011), an album that I had no way of knowing it existed. House and Home is his second release. The EP was produced by Dave Trumfio. Next to Hannigan's guitar we here keyboard and mellotron sounds by Jason Borger. The percussion is by Chris Infusio. My ears tell me that there is a female voice hiding behind the dark voice op front, but I do not have information on that.

It is not as if the California sunshine radiates through the music. Hannigan prefers to reside in the shade, with the blinds closed. His voice is dark and in one register. The music follows his emotionless voice. And then a sort of strange thing happens. The most up tempo song of the album starts playing, mind, all is relative when I write up tempo. The music is more fleshed out, including some nice lead lines on an electric guitar. "I'm in the sun", Hannigan sings. The name of the song? 'Shade'. There you go.

At the heart of every song is the acoustic guitar. Intricate finger picking patterns are played to lay accents in the music. Soft percussion is put underneath the music. Frivolity comes from the keyboards. For example an accordion in 'Little Black Box', a mellotron in 'Harness The Sun', an electric piano and synthesizer in 'Born Into Wind'. It is these sounds that make distinctions between the songs, provide them with a nice individual touch.

An EP is enough though. The six songs make a nice whole. More songs could be a long haul as in the end the atmosphere is more or less the same and I would not mind a little more happening within the songs. 'Observation' comes in time, so to speak. The riff reminds me a bit of the Meat Puppets cover on Nirvana's MTV album. A full album would need a few more songs like 'Observation' and 'Shade'.

House and Home comes in the right dosage. 24 minutes to unwind is enough. In that time space there is enough time to enjoy the music of Arlo Hannigan.

Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams. Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams

Pauw live with Machete Nightclub. Rotown, Rotterdam 3-12-2015

Photo: Wo.
On the day that one artist passed away, Scott Weiland, I had the pleasure to see the rise of a new band with loads of potential, Pauw. At the start of this year Oor tipped 15 acts for 2015, which I decided to test also. Pauw was my favourite from the start. The sold out EP showed great promise, that was fulfilled with the album Macrocosm Microcosm. All can be found on this blog. How does this translate live? My expectations were high.

In that pleasant, nicely sized venue in Rotterdam called Rotown we first were introduced to Machete Nightclub. While the warming up music was still filling my ears, something more eastern came through, but not taking over. A strange experience. Was the show starting or not? Especially as this had happened before, after which people started to work on cables and plugs and whatever at the side of the stage. It did start with five guys on the stage, of which one started to play along tho the eastern melody, which had taken over by now, on eastern sounding percussion.

There was one extremely familiar face behind the drum kit: Marcel Veenendaal of Di-Rect. Then all of a sudden this Chinese

hatted singer stood there, trying to look cool, but not overly convincing. What enfolded was a psych rock experience that knew some fantastic moments, but also needs more work. The deep dark voice of the singer is not always steady. Especially when a little more force is asked and what he sings about? I haven't got a clue. Something with machetes. The way the songs expand are quite nice, with some great guitar work here and there. On other moments just this little more variation would have done a miracle for the song. The response was sort of lukewarm. People listened but were not truly touched. For a support act that means that attention was paid and kept. First battle won. Mind, the band has to make sure that it does not get stuck in the gimmick of its opening numbers. Let me finish with a complement to the whole rhythm section. Between the drums, the tight bass and the frivolous percussion a great foundation is laid for the other three members. And as a tip. Tell the audience who you are next time as I totally missed that cue during the show.

Pauw started with an empty stage also and a make over of Pink Floyd's 'Any Colour You Like'. All the sounds came by in a slightly different form. The light show in the background started as if it had to be swung into life. From this dot flickering on and off, slowly a psychedelic experience unfolded that did not stop until the very last note. Swirling and twirling the whole time.

Photo: Wo.
With a drummer looking like Mick Fleetwood in 1967, taller than the rest of the band, long hair all over the sides of his long face, it was easy to imagine Fleetwood drumming over time and place in London with Fleetwood Mac. We were in Rotterdam in 2015 but the music was from that time long gone. If these boys' parents started a family early, than they weren't even born when this music was over its peak and totally out of fashion. Since a few years psychedelic rock is in fashion again and Pauw is one of the NL frontrunners.

Pauw delivered completely on the promise of its album. It managed to flesh out some of the songs, which made it hard to know when one song ended and another started. Singer Brian Potts helped us there at times by making a short announcement. What makes Pauw interesting to listen to is that most of its songs have a few great melodies within them, riffs that stand out. Both on the keyboards and the guitar. Melodies that remind me in a pleasant way of heroes from long ago like Pink Floyd, Earth & Fire and others, but are innovative enough to have relevance in the here and now. The songs are more than just a trip down memory lane or a study in 60s recording techniques, like e.g. with Jacoo Gardner's first album. Pauw is not that good as the mentioned examples yet, but shows the potential that could lead to greatness. Time will tell. Pauw does rock and invites to move and has a few songs that are total winners.

One tip though. The singing has to be a bit better placed in the mix. It was hard to hear at times.
