New. Paul McCartney

Over the past two weeks we have regularly looked at recent releases from several greats of past years. We started off with The Beatles, we end the series with New, Paul McCartney's latest record.

Paul McCartney is making records for over 50 years. Now in his early seventies, the ex-Beatle, ex-Wings and longtime solo recording artist is basically doing what he likes to do. Classical, choir, more experimental music under another name (The Firemen), jazz standards, anything is possible. And so it can seem that his solo career is on a slow burner, while in the meantime all sorts of output is presented to the world. If we measure things by a pop record under his own name we have to go back to 2007, six years, to ‘Memory almost full’, an album I did not even bother listening. Reading a review of ‘New’ something told me to listen to Macca’s latest album.

New starts with a sense of urgency. ‘Save us’ is a stark guitar driven song. Paul has found something to say on guitar and lets us know just that. Not all of New is this loud. ‘Early days’ is a slow song, not exactly a ballad, but an acoustic song such as Paul can write them. Title song 'New' is a melancholy pop song. Diversity is one of the treats/feats of New.

Paul McCartneys' voice has clearly aged. Not exactly making it to the high notes in a clear, easy way. To the contrary, but it gives 'Early days' and the theme authenticity. “I lived through those early days”, not unscathed, but healthy and well. It is commendable that McCartney does nothing to get away from these more difficult moments. There are high vocal spots all over New in which he goes to the limits of his current voice.

What surprises me, to be honest, is that I truly like New as a whole. It is 16 years ago that that happened to me with a Paul McCartney record. ‘Flaming pie’ was quite alright, before that I have to go back to 1988s ‘Flowers in the dirt’. And now after the totally rave show in Ahoy, early spring 2012 (click here for the review), Paul comes with another record that I like. At the same time it can’t compete in any way with ‘Band on the run’, Wings’ best album, but New easily surpasses many a record after ‘London town’.

New shows various sides of Paul McCartney. The crooner of old is there, always searching for a new ‘Yesterday’, but listening to ‘Appreciate’ I have to admit that Paul McCartney is able to incorporate very modern sounds into this darker song. A modern beat and strongly distorted guitars grace the melody in what turns out to be a very good song. The same goes for 'Alligator', 'Everybody out there' and 'Queenie eye', showing it is never too late to come up with a new sound.

New sounds just a tat more compact than McCartney usually does. This gives the album a sense of urgency and something contemporary. All without sounding strained to be modern. New is a Paul McCartney album, beyond doubt. Simply because of his voice. New is also a more modern record than he has made in decades. This is amendable, as nothing would have stopped him from presenting a bunch of songs that his last record buying fans would have expected to be presented. Instead they are challenged. Most people set in their ways, do not appreciate that, do they?

What is clearly lacking on New is an ultimate McCartney song. Whether it is a 'Paperback writer', a 'Helter skelter' or a 'Hi hi hi'. This is a level that he just doesn't reach any more. Is it fair to compare the McCartney of 2013 with his former self of 40 plus years ago? Of course it is, but on the other hand who in 2013 writes songs that are of the same consistent level of originality and quality as Paul and his colleagues wrote in the 1960s? Not very many. If I look at New from this point of view, this album has many a nice song on it. Pleasant, albeit not dangerous, but circa half of the songs on New possess an urgency that most pensionados do not have any more. New is an excellent addition to an oeuvre that is extremely distinguished.

P.S. Rolling Stone voted New the #4 album of 2013, I found out right after posting.

One breath. Anna Calvi

At the beginning of 2011 I was pleasantly surprised by Anna Calvi's first album. An album that I played regularly for a while, but I have to admit that it's been a while since I played it. I had more or less forgotten about her. One breath came just in time. Again I'm pleasantly surprised. One breath is an album that shows a few sides of Anna Calvi worth exploring in this blog.

Anna Calvi was born in 1980 in Twickenham. Her musical career only took off after being signed in 2009 by Domino Records. In 2010 before releasing her debut she toured with well-known artists like Arctic Monkeys and Nick Cave. In January 2011 'Anna Calvi' was released, propelling her career and making her name in the world of music lovers.

One breath is a step forward. On the album Anna Calvi shows to be a force to reckon with. She recreates atmospheres from long ago, ranging all the way from Nancy Sinatra's 'You only live twice', to Shirley Bassey, all mixed with classical elements and 80s doom without the fierce, unrelenting drums. All the while keeping the listener firmly in 2013 as well. These moments of rest are set off against tamed, distorted rockers. 'Love of my life' is punky, were it not that the song is to "difficult" rhythm wise. There's too much going on for a punk song, but that is what 'Love of my life' is none the same. Anna Calvi's voice is able to whisper and shout. The dreamy sequence in the same song takes her into Charlotte Gainsbourg territory. A name that can be mentioned more often here as well. One breath has the same sort of mellowness with all these tensions underneath, the French-English singer is famous for.

'Carry me over' is one of the more brilliant songs on One breath. Again many violins, over the hard hit drums, creating a nice contrast within the song, over which Anna Calvi sings like Marc Almond on 'Stars like us'. The gamalan like sounds lend 'Carry me over' some eastern mystique as well. Pretentious, perhaps, yes. Good, certainly. The song attests to the fact that Anna Calvi dares to explore her ideas to the max. That she's not afraid to be an artist and present songs that are not "pop", songs that are not easy to digest. And yes, there are a lot of different influences on One breath. It is all about what an artist does with these influences here and Anna Calvi uses them to make herself shine.

One breath is an album to immerse in, to surrender oneself to. There are several adventures on offer. From the solemn, serious 'Bleed on me', the chant like church song, Gregorian choir and all, 'The bridge' and rockers like 'Eliza'. The mood does change towards the end of the album, becoming more solemn. Another influence seem the electronic rock sound of Django Django, in completely natural style. 'Piece by piece' combines the rhythm with French style female singing.

In short there is a lot going on on One breath. Anna Calvi's second album is an album of a grown up woman, an artist that dares to go beyond the obvious and comes up trumps. One breath is a festival of sounds, a wonderful collection of songs and proof of Anna Calvi's songwriting skills. A beautiful record.

Chatma. Tamikrest

In love. Peace

Peace and love and happiness? To out of three are in the title of the album and the band name. So does the product take care of the third? The short answer to this question is yes. In love is a fun pop album. Sounding like Britpop bands have been doing since the mid-90s. Infuse some pop, with enough rock, add multi-layered vocal harmonies and loads of guitars and the world has another U.K. pop band.

Peace is from Worchester in the UK actually and is around since 2009. In love is its debut album. The band is obviously influenced by the likes of Oasis, Supergrass, and younger bands like The Rifles and The Automatic, if we leave out the shouting in the background. At the same time the band surprises in the second song ‘Follow baby’ with this mellowly sung chorus. Harrison Koisser sings “We don’t live forever”, how close can a reference be?, but the chorus is a take at originality. Changing the mood of the song itself and the album as a whole.

Peace dares to do this more often, the exuberant ‘Lovesick’ is followed by the slow ‘Float forever’ and the somewhat prickly ‘Wraith’. As a whole In love is missing an extra layer of depth that makes the album a killer. Not unlike what Dutch pop rockers Handsome Poets is lacking at the moment. There are moments of perfect pop, but the little extra is missing with on In love. It's that little edge of danger that is lacking. ‘Drain’ is the exact opposite of that. It starts with the ‘Tell it to my heart’ melody and has some disco influences in the rhythm as well. Well sung, well played, fun all over, but a little to clean to my taste. The intermezzo makes up for that. The freaky guitar parts, the muted notes, show that Peace can show of in other regions as well. This makes that overall the album comes out on my good side. Especially the final songs on the album hold a promise for the future.

Peace shows on In love that it is a new, young band with potential. There are several songs on the album that are really worth while listening to more than once and twice as well, as I did by now. The question is, which road will Peace take after this?

Made up mind. Tedeschi Trucks Band
