Bunny Mode. Jaguar Jonze

With her EP Diamonds & Liquid Gold Jaguar Jonze found herself on this blog for the first time. I ended my review with the note that the EP was a promise of much more to come. Based on Jaguar Jonze's debut album the conclusion was the right one to make: that more is definitely here alright.

On Bunny Mode Ms. Jonze rocks out some more in a very modern way. She is an alternative rocker with a taste for modern rhythms. There's no fall on her knee for a commercial sound but she does not mind lending a few elements of singers from recent years that score huge hits galore.

Jaguar Jonze, a.k.a. Deena Lynch, is from Australia and made the album in her home country together with her band. She's totally in control of the creative process, making Bunny Mode truly her album. The title reflects how rabbits freeze when sensing danger, something she used to do as well. And, is ready to say goodbye to.

Bunny Mode has a few sides to it, making it a varied album. Although it borrows from a few musical styles, it never gets too much of anything. There is a brake on the music, allowing for two aspects, inner tension and class. This starts in the very first seconds of the album. 'Know My Name' is an exercise in restraint. Vocally Jaguar Jonze seems to be able to compete with fantasy rockers like Floor Jansen easily, but decided to steer away from this path. Resulting in a song that remains full of anticipation.

'Who Died And Made You King?' is a dance and rock track in one. This is a tough song basking in dynamics, emptying the song and building it up. Next expect a groove The Black Keys would not be ashamed of, while remaining a modern rock chick and not a copycat southern boogie dame. By bringing her own age, in two meanings of the word, to 'Swallow', the song sounds fully 2022, proving rock has a future.

Bunny Mode meanders between these different influences and sounds. There's even a rock ballad, 'Drawing Lines'. With her debut album Jaguar Jonze shows once again the talent she has as a musician. Someone worthwhile to follow in the coming years.
