If I Have Only One Time Askin'. Daniel Romano

If I've Only One Time Askin' is voorzien van een traditioneel aandoende en bijzonder smaakvolle instrumentatie.

Prachtplaat.

De Staat of independence. De Staat live in Gebr. De Nobel, Leiden. 29-01-2016

Photo: Wo.
Yes, De Staat of independence it is. The band sells out the larger venues, has its own recording and rehearsal space, the album 'O' is of superior quality, the band plays the music it wants to and the audience follows. The only things left to wish for is an international breakthrough of sorts and larger venues, if possible. De Staat shows the sort of progression a fan hopes a band makes. The road from 'Wait For Evolution' to 'O' is gradual one. As this review shows the band evolves live as well. For those interested, you can follow this evolution backwards though the years as well. De Staat featured regularly on these pages in the past four years.

De Staat is at the top of its game, I wrote that in my recent review of 'O' (read on here: http://wonomagazine.blogspot.nl/2016/01/o-de-staat.html). On record, but also live. Having seen the band evolve through the years, it is abundantly clear that De Staat reaches a larger effect with a more dosed effort. Yes, the members work hard on stage, but at the same time the music does more of the work as well.

Photo: Wo.
When a band grows, more things get possible. Like the light show, which certainly played an important part in the show. The visuals in the background as well as playing with a video camera and stage effects in light and mist. Singing in a indirect direct way to the audience during 'Help Yourself'. The title became self-fulfilling as the plug connecting the camera kept falling out, disconnecting it to the screen. Well thought out effects, that added to the experience, are part of the show and not just a bunch of lights switched on or off.

Photo: Wo.
The new material adds extremely well to the existing songs. The direct effect may be a little less movement and a bit more attentive listening, standing still is still no option when De Staat starts playing. Opening song was the song that opens 'O' too. 'Peptalk' showed the intention of the band straightaway: relentless beats and reticence. That is what De Staat has become a master in, leaving spaces open that easily could have been filled with lots of noise and beats. The effect of the music is less direct, but certainly more special and lasting. Something all five members play a role in. All get the opportunity to contribute to this play of stopping and going full out. It all starts with a drummer who seems to be getting better and better, Tim van Delft. It doesn't seem like he's doing something which is extremely difficult for ordinary people. The foundation of De Staat is solid, full of imagination and varied.

What 'O' showed was that not even a true ballad is beyond De Staat. 'Time Will Get Us Too' was drawn out into a long outro, but one of the highlights of the evening. The tension was almost touchable in the venue.

Add to the great new songs De Staat classics like 'Sweatshop' and 'Input Source Select' and the evening is complete. The fact that I did not miss them a lot, expected them of course, says all about what a fine album 'O' is.

Photo: Wo.
I am going to write something controversial as well. This thought just does not get out of my mind, ever since having seen the band for the first time in 2012: De Staat plays fascistic music. Don't get me wrong, the music has nothing to do with what passes for an ideology in those circles, no. It has everything to do with the fact that whole armies could march to the rhythms of De Staat. From Rome to Cologne or on galleys pulling the oars over the Mediterranean. Torre Florim has something of a charismatic leader in his way of presenting himself as well, not to speak of his robot like movements.

Photo: Wo.
When Florim jumped into the audience to sing 'Witch doctor' from the floor, carnival broke out in Leiden, a week early to the south, in a Calvinistic city. Everyone on the floor was circling around Florim in a frenzy. A great way to end the show.

De Staat is better than ever. The ease with which the members play and sing the not your everyday rhythms and songs, make it seem so easy. De Staat is ready for larger things, Hopefully people in other countries will start paying attention.

Paul Kantner (1941 - 2016) IM

Just now I saw a tweet announcing the death of another rock giant: Paul Kantner of Jefferson Airplane and Jefferson Starship fame. The rhythm guitarist and co-singer in two bands that I used to be a huge fan of. Alhtough Kantner was an integral part of the bands's sound, with his characteristic voice and songs, most attention in general was paid to singers and songwriters Grace Slick and Marty Balin.

Paul Kantner was the man of the cosmic escape and the swollen songs, that could be a bit too much when the song wasn't that particularly good. If it was, then his songs were phenomenal. My favourite is 'Wild Tyme' from 'After Bathing At Baxter's'. That song has all that makes a Paul Kantner song good. Strong, joined vocals and an unstoppable drive. And the excruciating lead guitar of Jorma Kaukonen.

Jefferson Airplane came into my life with the joint single 'White Rabbit'/'Somebody To Love' in 1970, with 'Volunteers' on the Woodsock soundtrack album soon after. It took another eight years before I learned more. On board of the Nedlloyd Mississippi in the docks of London, now London City Airport, one of the ship's mates played 'Flightlog', a double compilation album. I liked so much what I was hearing, that soon after I had most albums by Jefferson Airplane, the stuff in between, some Hot Tuna and Jefferson Starship. The love cooled in the second half of the 80s when the Jefferson Starship albums became very formalistic AOR.

The comeback Jefferson Airplane album in 1989 was fantastic. After that I lost track with Starship, where Kantner was not a part of. That is over 25 years ago. In 2016 I am more a fan of pleasant memories that an actual fan. Every once in a while an old album goes on the record player and things are quite alright. 'Surrealistic Pillow', "Baxter's", "Baron Von Tollbooth And The Chorme Nun", "Dragonfly" will always remain among my favourite albums and that compilation album of course, my very first Jefferson Airplane album, 'Flightlog'.

The only regret is that I have never seen the bands play live. In the summer of 1989 they were where I was not in the U.S.. After that I can't even remember whether they ever played over here.

My heroes seem to be thinning out fast these past years. Now Paul Kantner. Time to listen to 'Wild Tyme' or 'Last Wall Of The Castle', 'Have You Seen The Stars Tonight'.

Snapshots Of Eternity. NNENN

Gregory Page live in De Oude School, Warmond. 27-01-2016

Gregory Page in "duet". Photo: Wo.
For years Hans had been pushing me: "You have to come and see this guy play". From the in (video)store gig with, legend has it 14 paying viewers, to a packed De Oude School. Gregory Page may play much larger venues in NL since that legendary gig, he keeps coming back to Hans van Polanen for a show. Finally I have come around to be present.

Now Gregory Page plays or in a way recreates music from an era long gone. At home it is something I have tried to listen to, but miserably failed at. It is just not my kind of music. Live though this is very different I have found out. Gregory Page is a charming man, tells some nice stories and has a few "faces".

There is the Gregory Page who writes songs in a, let me call it 1930s, vain. The kind of jazzy entertainment songs as I heard in old black and white movies which were shown on tv when I was young. Accompanying himself on guitar in quite a nice way he strums his songs forward with melancholy but smart lyrics about love and loss not seldom with a smart observation along the way. The only thing missing is the hiss and scratches of an old 78 RPM record.

Then there is the Gregory Page who brings old songs back alive. Duetting with a female singer of old in 'Georgia On My Mind' as if she's standing next to him. Looking at it from a, cold, distance it's nothing but karaoke, live in the room it's done with a nice story about a neighbour complaining in the middle of the night, a story about the singer and with so much charm, Fedora added, it almost becomes real. Or the story about the English lady playing and writing songs in the evening, recorded by her husband. Whatever the finding and the story behind this "treasure trove", the song was rather disturbing where long-lasting relationships are concerned, funny, witty, but sad. "We turned out to be you and me".

Photo: Wo.
Finally there is the Gregory Page the singer-songwriter. Although this is in a 1970s style, it does sound more modern and could be songs that The Eagles recorded at the time and others of the times. This guy can write great singer-songwriter songs.

In a way it seemed to as me I was taken by my grandparents to a show that they could have went to in the 1920s or 30s. Music in a time capsule. In my mind's eye I could see them sitting in the room at an age that I only know from old, fading photographs. Much younger than I am now. I had a great time, but I still doubt whether I will play Mr. Page's music at home a lot. That does not matter. Gregory Page is a great entertainer and deserves an ever growing audience. What a way to find out how much fun these "old" songs are. On a windswept, rainy evening in Warmond, Gregory Page provided the warmth of a coal-warmed room, no matter how cold the rest of the house is.

Have You In My Wildernis. Julia Holter

Prachtig.

Nero. Ian Fisher

With his album Nero Ian Fisher steps into a line long tradition of singer-songwriters, country (rockers) and roots musicians. The release of Nero on Snowstar Records is something new though. With Ian Fisher an artist is added to the stable of the label who originates from the U.S. and works from Berlin. Musically the German capitol has nothing to do with the what is on offer here. It is all Americana.

Nero appealed to me at the first listening session. I can present a few reasons for that. The voice of Ian Fisher is soothing in a dark kind of way. The music is arranged in a varied way and tends towards darkness. This can all be credited to the sounds added by multi-instrumentalist Ryan Thomas Carpenter. All things "western" come from Ollie Samland who plays U.S. things with strings like pedal steel and dobro.

Just listen to how 'Nero' opens, it is heart moving. Musical tears are shed by the pedal steel, without a single moment losing out to false sentimentality. There is a darkness that is real. Ian Fisher is being stared at by the abyss and simply stares it down. No matter how basic the chords may be that are played in the title song 'Nero', everything is in its right place. Fire, thoughts of fire, is what it is all about. A Nero in thought and then comes in the piano played by Ryan Thomas Carpenter. Sheer beauty in music.

Some fast finger picking is at the heart of 'Too Bad'. Around it a pedal steel, percussion, the harmony singing of Alexia Peniguel and the bass of producer Fabian Kalker are woven. They present the song the atmosphere that belongs when things are too bad. Intriguing, but distanced, fascinating yet resigned. It gives the song a sort of deepness that makes me come back and listen again. Searching for what? A ray of light of confirmation? I haven't made up my mind yet, despite so many listening sessions.

In nearly all songs Ian Fisher and his fellow musicians are able to do something like this. They manage to produce the right sounds of the basic guitar strumming, without hindering the vocal in any way. Ian Fisher's voice is always central, as is Ms. Peniguel's voice when supporting. The mix is spacious allowing room for all the instruments in such a way that each instrument supports the song and stands on its own as well. Fabian Kalker and Hannes Bieger (mix) deserve quite some credits here.

Listening to the at times very bare support of instruments, all mood and atmosphere, I totally understand how Snowstar Records found Ian Fisher. He simply belongs on this label. This is accentuated by the fact that Town of Saints' Harmen Ridderbos sings with Ian Fisher on 'Almost Darlin, while Heta Salkolathi plays the fiddle on 'All You Need'.

Looking at Ian Fisher's Bandcamp site he has quite a few releases to his name already. All went by me so far. This stopped with Nero. 2016 has only just begun, but already it has an impressive release tagged to it. Nero sets a standard in Americana that may prove hard to reach at for others this year.

Dear Wormwood. The Oh Hellos

The Oh Hellos introduced themselves to me through the Noisetrade.com website, basically for free, which I traded a review for as I liked there album, 'Through The Deep, Dark Valley' a lot.
(Read on here: http://wonomagazine.blogspot.nl/2013/04/through-deep-dark-valley-oh-hellos.html)

Two and a half years down the road the band is back with its new album, Dear Wormwood and I have to say that I am impressed. Dear Wormwood has a depth that allows for so much to discover with each spin. Superficially I could call The Oh Hellos a hey-ho! band, as I tend to call them, but that would leave so much out of the picture, that it would sell the band extremely short.

Dear Wormwood is one of the best in the genre released to date. Forget about Of Monsters And Men, Mister and Mississippi, The Lumineers and above all Mumford & Sons. This is The Oh Hellos and they do not seem to come better in the genre. (Re-reading my previous review of The Oh Hellos at this point, I notice that I'm repeating myself and would have done so, and may do so, again as I find I stand by my remarks of 2013. Dear Wormwood brings the exact same feelings and ideas to my head. It is always nice to find some consistency.)

Dear Wormwood starts with (a) 'Prelude'. Setting a level of ambition, but also a somewhat mystical atmosphere of which a vocal background is recognisable later on. This mood is kept up throughout the album. There is something angelic or elfish, whatever you'd like to call it, in the music and singing. The songs seem to float on the early morning mist in a forest, catching the first rays of the sun. Creating that scene in which things of reality are missing underneath the mist and all things sticking out on top of the mist. Dislocated from reality. A deer without legs, trees without stumps. That is what I see when listening to Dear Wormwood.

The Oh Hellos do not exactly take the easy way out. Just listen to the way 'Exunt' starts. Crescendos of sound following a line sung by Tyler Heath. All underscoring his exit. It is a song that sticks out, is different, not aimed at direct, easy to digest beauty, but to conquer by the listen. An album full of Exunts would not work of course. Next up is 'Caesar' one of the songs where Tyler Heath aims for the top. In a way as Crowded House could do. Again there are unsuspecting turns in the song, leaving so much to discover. Like its title 'Caesar' is majestic. Elevated. Floating through space and time.

The Oh Hellos, next to Tyler there is his sister Maggie, joined live by a host of musicians, are three albums (and a Christmas EP) into its career. The growth on display is phenomenal and will lead to getting better known by the album. Dear Wormwood is another leap from 'Through The Deep, Dark Valley', that it makes me wonder where this will stop. The quality is enormously consistent on Dear Wormwood. The musicianship is great, so is the singing and the recording.

The final connotation I have is with sacredness, with old church music. Just listen to 'Pale White Horse' and you will hear what I mean. Maggie Heath sings in such a divine way (and reminds me of Maggie Riley in 'Moonlight Shadow'). The sort of seriousness that was present in English folk of around 1970 too.

Summing up, The Oh Hellos have done it again. Dear Wormwood is the ideal follow up to what came before. Progression in all the ways I like a band to show with a new record. Keeping what was good and evolving towards new heights. All can be found here. Now it's your turn to find out.

The Deslondes. The Deslondes

No Sound From The Outside. Saybia

No Sound From The Outside was one of the records that remained on that indefinite pile of albums that pass by during a year. Saybia never really was my band in the 00s, although it had a few beautiful songs to its name. Things changed when the album moved from my iPod to my cd player and got played in the room, instead of my ears.

No Sound From The Outside simply is a beautiful album, a serious album of the kind in which the flame of the joy of life seems to have been extinguished. The approach to the music has not changed so much. Saybia still excels in the kind of superior pop ballad, but there's a darkness over the music that gives the music of the band an extra texture and frankly makes it more interesting to listen to for a whole album. The music is more atmosphere than straightforward songs. Saybia has shaken off the A-Ha factor and won a world. In the last quarter of the album things change, as you'll read later.

Saybia released three albums in the 00s. In 2008 a personal tragedy struck singer SĆøren Huss after which the band went on hold. Although the band started performing again from 2010 onward, it took five more years before a new record was released.

The band members entered their 40s and somehow I'm able to hear that Saybia is less melancholy and more serious. The music is in full support of the lyrics that point to negative experiences. "The eye of the storm". "There's a black hole in your soul". There's resignation as well, "I found piece in my heart, with what I leave behind", as Huss sings in 'Airplanes and Submarines". Life has gone on and so have I, he tells us in an indirect way. At the same time the music expands easily from a very basic accompaniment to a multi-layered guitar extravaganza, without falling into the trap of overdoing it. In other words, Saybia has found a delicate balance in its music.

That music is soft rock or that term of old: adult oriented rock. But not of that horrid kind that came out of the U.S. in the 80s. You can hear the 'I Don't Know What Love Is' synths in 'Hollow Is Your Promise' for example. At the same time time Saybia explores where Coldplay left off for whatever pastures I do not tend to graze on. The band manages to make soft pop/rock interesting, by giving the music an extra layer. In that layer not only nice little things happen on the instruments, the melodies are as if that puppy dog looks me in the eye, as if it is telling me 'look how cute I am'. There's that delicate balance again, as this could go so terribly wrong with me. No Sound From The Outside maintains it mostly throughout the album. Sometimes through a nice lead guitar line, then a bass pops up or the keyboards do something extra that make them and the song stand out. All in one song at a time.

It is SĆøren Huss who is the stable factor. His voice sounds the same no matter what song. He sounds in a way that makes me wonder whether he ever smiles. Not as if he is about to bursts into tears, no, more towards emotionless observation of the things he is singing about. When he changes this just a little in the double tracked 'Ominous Mystery', it is as if the sun burst through a small hole in the dark overcast winter sky, totally unexpected. The clear guitars support the mood immediately. Just well done. In the second half of the album, the mood does lift more often, like in the up tempo 'It's About Time'. It is more fun, but also less exciting. Saybia becomes more like a regular band. O.k., but not special.

Saybia is back and with an album it has every right to be proud of. An album that begs listening and holds several songs that can be called beautiful. By the time that the downcast mood may become just too much, the band is able to change the mood as well, without losing an inch on quality. 'It's Been Way To Long' is even funny when the dog comes out. Saybia is back. Welcome!

Coda. Led Zeppelin

This January it is two years ago that I, at the time unwittingly, started a reassessment of all Led Zeppelin's studio albums. It all started with Erwin Zijleman, who reviewed 'Houses Of The Holy' and me thinking why not match that?, having always liked that album a lot. That summer the band started to re-release its oeuvre and the rest is history.

With Coda I'm exactly there, with the album Led Zeppelin released after its demise in 1980. By then I was totally turned off the band. How far is shown in the fact that I only had one LP of Led Zeppelin, 'In ThroughThe Out Door', and never bought one of the mid price re-issues of the 1980s. The hitsingles had become a faint memory from my early youth, the albums not in my possession until the mid 1990s, on cd.

Coda was never a part of that, so I'm listening without prejudice. Except for the fact that Led Zeppelin surprised me. Not as in even more, no as in truly surprised. Most albums were so much better than I remembered. The one that I did not like, 'Physical Graffiti', remained just there. I think it's their worst album.

'Coda' is a bunch of leftovers and alternative versions. Is everything the band played touched by gold? Even those bits that were discarded? Time to find out.

It's John Bonham who gets to kick off Coda. The pace of 'We're Gonna Groove' is as fast as the title suggests. Some study learns that it is a live recording with some overdubs added from January 1970. The song was never used on record before. Why is a good question, as it would have fit well with  'II'. Again John Bonham picks up in the more folky 'Poor Tom', a left over from 'III'. Acoustic guitars are dominant here as started to show through by that time, circa one and a half year into the band's recording career. The third face of Led Zeppelin, English folk started to show through. They would do this a lot better over time. 'Poor Tom' does show how well folk fitted the band.

Face two, electric blues, comes up next. In a blistering live rendition of 'I Can't Quit You Baby' Led Zeppelin shows what a fantastic blues band it is. Plant wails, Plant rants, raves and wails, Jones and Bonham kick up a storm and hold back in all the right places. And there's Jimmy Page to top that all off. 'Walter's Walk' sounds like a demo, a song never truly recorded and left by the studio wayside. It is one of those pleasant Led Zeppelin rockers. With a load of Page all over the place and Bonham's 'Animal' kind of drumming. Wild, loud and explosive.

Side 2 of the original album is taken in by 'In Through The Out Door' outtakes. Now the album had more than surprised me. I found it exceptionally good and certainly to what I had expected; not much. I'm leaving out a John Bonham drum solo. Why would anyone ever want to put a drumsolo on a studio album? Sometimes it is fun to be at, as an experience, but that is all.

'Ozone Baby' is a bit of a lightweight rocker, with something of a psychedelic guitar solo/intermezzo. The second solo is more solid. It starts somewhat hesitantly, but soon after Page makes the roof come off. I notice that I like the tightness of the song. Here's a band rocking out, leaving out all that is not necessary to have a good rock song.

'Darlene' goes back to the rock and roll of Chuck Berry with a total Led Zeppelin make over. The stop-start rhythm is there. John Paul Jones comes up with a fun piano solo. Rock and roll and Led Zeppelin. Again a song that showed that the band had enough left to explore when it came to its fateful end. 'Darlene' is not the best the band ever did, but shows how good it is, including the influences that are let in in abundance here. From a Led Zeppelin song, the band starts playing and does a tour of rock and roll's history. The fun only gets bigger.

'Wearing and Tearing' was the end of the band's career until cds and re-releases became the standard, respectively in vogue. The song sounds unfinished. It could have used another take (or more). Having said that, 'Wearing and Tearing' again shows how fruitful the 'In Through The Out Door' sessions were. What happens here sounds truly inspired. Very much up tempo. Very much rock and roll. An answer to the punkrockers making fun of this old dinosaur band. I'm pretty certain of it that that is the case. And where are they now?

The conclusion has to be that also Coda surprises me. It holds a few songs that would have deserved to be on the original records that they did not make it to. What a band!

The circle is round. You can find a review of all studio albums of Led Zeppelin on this blog. No other band of old matches that. A small search finds you there. I am tempted to come up with a short best of top 10 after this. That would make it a nice ending. Keep watching.

Devil On Both Shoulders. Romi Mayes

O. De Staat

Album number four O is. For De Staat it is an important album. With its previous effort 'I-Con' it seemed to have reached the pinnacle of its sound. The influences were integrated in a most organic way, creating a form of hip-hop rhythms infused industrial rock that could upset every place it was played into involuntary and voluntary movements called dancing. The sound was blown up into humongous proportions, as big as it was organic. That was what made 'I-Con' so good.

With the in between mini album 'Vinticious Versions' the band showed that it could alter its own songs into someone else's. As if The Beastie Boys played De Staat e.g.. So where is De Staat early in 2016?

That question is easy to answer. At the top of its game, but different. The band has let in some pop elements, without losing a centimetre of its own identity. The first listening session is extremely pleasant. O is certainly less confronting, so pleases more instantly. There's no need for me to go looking for the beauty in a thorny bush first.

The second thing that catches my ear is that the sound is certainly more down-sized. The rhythms are there, the keyboard sounds are there, the guitars are there and still it is different. The studio the band built for itself in Nijmegen has a quieting influence on De Staat.

What I'm still deliberating is whether the band simply plays less instruments or softer or that the sound is mixed in a more spacious way creating a wider sound. The effect is that O is less directly in my face than 'I-Con' was (and those albums that went before). 'Make The Call, Leave It All' certainly falls into the latter category. It is poppy, sung high-voiced in the choruses. The typical De Staat elements are all there and yet it is so different. Like a prickly pear trying to please, that comes close as a description. Admire the plant without touching. In the same way I enjoy being exposed to this music tremendously.

Where De Staat excels in, is to play what does not seem obvious to play. Usually that tends to dissonance, but not here. The riffs are not standard but remain organic. The album is full of songs holding stranger rhythms, notes on the keyboard that are not aimed to please in a direct way, but together can make a crowd go mad. Like a typical Carnaval hit of the 70s infused with a load of red peppers in darker, nether regions. Where melody was somewhat neglected on the first two albums, it has risen to prominence since and the mix is what makes De Staat exceptional.

It is a step too far to write that De Staat has reinvented itself. Far from. On O the band manages to achieve the same maximum effect without having to go all out. Over the past now seven years I've followed De Staat with interest, reported on it, albums and live, and can let you all know that the band has released another fine album.

Interview met Gerrit Van Dyck van The LVE

Interview met Gerrit Van Dyck van The LVE

Door Wout de Natris

© WoNo Magazine 2016

The Love, The Live, The LVA … :-)

Daarvoor zit ‘Bags’, die volgde op ‘Love When You Don’t Want It’.
Mijn nummers beginnen heel vaak autobiografisch.
